Russ ,I read somewhere along that there is a risk of bricking BBB if I do not follow a power down sequence. It is also there in Miero's site
The current driver shuts down the "cape power switch" right before BBB power down.
! This might not be safe for BBB if cape does not shut down immediatelly too.
! The next driver will have configurable delay between cape shut down and
! BBB shut down.

so does it mean I need to follow a manual powering down sequence of some kind?
 
You need to do a clean shutdown before you remove power.

Just do a bit of research on the beaglebone.

You can do:

shutdown -h now
or
poweroff

You will want to use a battery for the long term so that the BBB shuts itself down properly on power loss.

So it is only for BBB , and it should not be unplugged before power off.
But what does cape do to power it down?or cape has to do with power down.
is it for those powering BBB through Hermes?
