Half Chang build

Personally, I would not bother recessing an FE207E or any Fostex with so thin a flange, although definitely some people do.

With the 207's plastic black beveled / ribbed ring around the driver, in my newbie opinion, recessing is probably only for aesthetic reasons anyway.

I do have one Fostex box with a recessed driver opening, and veneer, and it has a very narrow slot which reveals the material underneath the veneer. So to me, not recessing seems slightly cleaner but I'm sure opinions vary.

Extensive testing was done by the BBC when they designed their LS3/5A and it makes a difference for the dispersion of the sound. The LS3/5A has a small square of felt around the T27 (tweeter) to improve dispersion.

Hi Amadeus,

I think the felt (or cork) is a great idea. I can imagine it's extremely useful on a tweeter but the FE207E has that plastic ring just outside the surround, and it's at least as tall as the frame. 8" drivers also beam a lot.

But putting felt or cork around the frame is something I'd definitely like to try! That is a cool suggestion.

I impressed with the amount of bass, its more than I expected. The speakers are very mid forward. Listening to James Taylor they make his voice sound overly harsh. Had to use a non-tube amp for now. One of the channels on my new cheapie Chinese amp isn't working. Will get my dad, a very good amp tech, to check it out.

Quick question. Im planning on the Half Changs for my 207s. This is my first DIY speaker. Looking at the plans, I see no binding posts. Where are they supposed to be?

EDIT: Also, which portions of the cabinet should have damping material? Or should I just experiment and see what works best? Wheres a good place to start with damping material?

Thanks guys! I wasnt sure, because Ive read so much about how finicky single full range driver cabinets can be. I have my FE207s in simple 30L BR cabinets right now with Planet_10 phase plugs. While they sound great, I feel the Half Chang would make them better. Ill probably re-purpose the old cabs with Pioneer B20s or the like.
