Passive preamp

Here an exemple of passive preamp: volume is Noble stereo, rca are Cardas low cost(at CD in and preamp out) , wiring is OFC ,and
solder also Cardas, this low cost baby hold againts any preamp under 1200$ to date. The proposed Elma ladder switch is much more hi end. And in fact, I sold my tube CAT for such a ladder Elma built with Holcos.

An other passive pre-amp

One other passive pre-amp. If you use only CD ,it is the one to
looking for, with better switch(like Elma ladder) this passive is top
notch. Why? no rca, no switching,no wiring, only a passive volume on interconnect.

Photo: an Alps black beauty, 2 vishay resistors(can't see it), home made wiring with OFC and WBT crimp version.

Hello All,

I plan to get the final quote tomorrow and order on Friday as promised. I plan to order more than those accounted for on this Wiki, so please keep posting that you want to add your name to the list! I will then post the final prices (excluding shipping) after I receive the quote.

People have been emailing me about shipping. I really don't care how I ship it to you, so if you want it fast and want to pay extra for it, then so be it. If you want it slower to save money, that's fine too. The only thing I care about is that it's insured and gives me a tracking number for both our protection.

The current list:

Ladder (04A2R00)
bryman79 - 1
6H5C - 1
Praudio - 3
pkpickard - 1
rpafenberg - 2
LastStop - 1
ITZBITZ - 1
Chosen1 - 1
Carrier Bag Man - 1
stadams - 1
tommak - 1
ftjandra - 1
TOTAL - 15

Series (04A2A00)
Praudio - 3
BrianGT - 1
jhead - 1
Yoke - 2
TOTAL - 7

Regards,
Bryan

Hey Bryan,

I'm going out on a short vacation tomorrow (1 week), so I won't be here to witness the order-moment. 🙁
Please don't sell my baby! I will contact you ASAP when I return.

Fair enough I think.

Greetings,
Ray.

Hello All,

I am pleased to inform you that ftjandra has stepped up to the plate and offered to order and ship out the ladder and series attenuators. Since we no longer have to pay CA sales tax, the price on both units will go down.

ftjandra, let us know when you place the order and how much each will cost.

Yes, I offered to take over the group order to save everybody a couple dollars as I live in GA and won't have to pay taxes. It will take a few extra days for Elma to ship the attenuators to me, but the total savings is around $150, and so we thought it was worth it.

As of right now, the ladders will be $80 and the series will be $54. That is without shipping or paypal fees (only if you plan on using a credit card instead of your checking account).

As you all have previously decided that the deadline will be Friday (today), I will place the order with them this morning and hopefully they will ship them out today as well. They have previously told me that they had these in stock.

Could everybody that is participating in this group buy please email me their contact information so that I can sort everything out? (ftjandra@mindspring.com - please put "ELMA Group Order" in the subject line). As of right now, these are the domestic shipping costs per their websites assuming the package is no more than 1lb.

USPS with $50 insurance - $5.15
USPS with $100 insurance - $6.05
Fedex with $100 insurance - $5.66
UPS with $100 insurance - $7.35

In your email, please state what method of shipping you would like (especially those not in the US). It doesn't really matter to me what sort of shipping you want as long as you pay for it 🙂. So, if you want me to ship it next-day air, etc. just make a note of it in the email.

PS. Yoke, I will ship your two series attenuators to Bryan and he will take care of it as both you have discussed already.

Resistor Kit

What about resistor kits to go along with these? I don't know whether this is even possible unless we can agree on one or two resistor configurations. I am thinking about using Vishay Dale RN60 resistors, as BrianGT mentioned earlier in this thread. They are good and cheap.

Are most of you planning on using this attenuator for a Gainclone? Then we can maybe have a kit for a 20 or 25K log (or linear?) pot.

If we are going to have resistor kits, we need to do decide on it fast so that I can ship everything at once.

Here is a spreadsheet I created a while back when I started building ladder attenuators. It let's you adjust the values until you get a nice log stepping. I hand-tweaked it so that I didn't end up with 1dB changes along the scale, I wanted a nice 2dB stepping throughout the range so I tweaked the values until it worked out. I have one of these in my PPA headphone amplifier now and it works perfectly with nice smooth steps between each notch.
