Yeah, couldn't move around in a college dorm, small apt., without bumping into either a floor or macrame suspended one, not to mention the macrame suspended TTs.............

Yeah, not exactly ‘70’s - basically pulled from much earlier speakers.Yeah, couldn't move around in a college dorm, small apt., without bumping into either a floor or macrame suspended one, not to mention the macrame suspended TTs.............![]()
The JBL100 foam grill’s were really authentic’70’s designs. I searched for something similar: funky pattern & color and the 20ppi ”red” waffle foam from here might look period’esq while still being different:

-you’d have to shave the driver side (for the drivers) pretty thin to get a result that didn’t attenuate the sound to much.
These were my father's Wharfedales (left), probably from the late 1960s - nice veneer with matching hardwood trim around the baffle; the other (right) is my Leak sandwich cone, also from the 1960s and veneered, but note the aluminium strips around the edge of the baffle - the "tweed"-covered grill frame located inside these strips providing a quite distinctive and attractive finish. Note also the baffle-mounted tweeter.
I'd like to have a very thin frame - wire really - that would then standoff from the baffle. It is easy to come up with ways to do that, but attaching the grill cloth is where I was kind of stuck. Jim Griffin posted an idea about a decade ago where he mentioned using spline to press the grill cloth into a groove. Like replacing the screen on a screendoor. I think this will work perfect. What I will probably do is print some samples and see how it needs to be shaped to press the grill cloth in. Part of the print will include a hole shaped to accept something like 1/8" square Al or steel tubing. This will provide the real structure of the frame. Then I'll print corners for attaching to the rods and will have posts that accept a magnet.

What about steel studs that project from the baffle by some amount, like 1/2 inch... and then the grill frame has small magnets bonded in, and they attach to the studs. ... ?
You want "Old School" ? Why go past Paul Carmody?

Although when I go old school I lean towards 15" woofers, preferably two in each box; I'd like to build something like that and call it "Rolling Thunders"

The last variant will use 12" woofers. I had settled on Kappalite 3012LF, but since I have 3012HOs on hand and the sensitivity should work with the other drivers, I'll probably try them first. I intend to use the Scanspeak Discovery dedicated midrange (92.5 dB/2.83v) and Beyma TPL75. That's probably a 2025 project though.
Thanks for the heads up. Did they give an ETA?
