Why should more expensive be better? That is a very non-linear relationship once you get above a certain threshold. Why else would people buy megabuck watches that are less accurate than a casio F91?

Note that editing out your insults doesn't work when we get email updates. No reason at all why the simple PC should not perform as well, and many reasons why it could perform better as its doing less. You have a belief which you are clinging onto, but you do not seem to know why you hold it.

Fashion sell . Beat headphones had a majority of the 200 dollar plus market as fashion statement not as a quality product for great reproduction of sound . My co workers ware some of the biggest funny looking watches and have a smart phone . Interestingly enough they ware the watch and then pull out the phone to check the time . The submariner day date that I have had for the last 30 years is expensive to keep running and keep good time about 20 second a month after tune it to me for a long time . It not about part per million digital accuracy it is about the joy of watching a machine crafted by humans work well . Well at least for me . The love of the machine is not measure by spec alone . As is music for me . Regards

I'm not holding to it, you still stick to the ideology that a purpose build device should be worse in the one thing that it was designed to do than a multi purpose device.
The watch as I explained was a bad example, because it is a status symbole. The more expensive the less the actual purpose is important. On the other hand at HiFi we want devices that can fulfill their purpose. To reproduce music. Not the look or the status.
And as you don't even seem to understand what is the "game", it is really useless to argue with you...

Now, on your 'purpose built' device. I see no purpose built device on either side. Both are generic (Rpi or PC). A squeezebox is purpose built, as is a chromecast. Does that make them automatically better?

Hard to love a PC though. And having worked with some true leviathans in my time, nothing home computing wise impresses me.
But this is about best sounding, not blingiest.
(FWIW I hope to inherit an omega deville one day. beautiful, but blingy.)
mrWagner, the much more interesting question is if an audiophile owning an expensive crap DAC would ever admit to it sounding worse than a much cheaper "non-dedicated" (whatever that is supposed to mean) device or if he could even hear it.

Convincing your brain that something sounds better can be obtained with 0 hardware upgrade!
Do you think that after you've spent 1000-2000$ extra on an "upgrade", you will admit to yourself that there's no difference? There MUST be, one way or another, you will hear a difference. You need justification and peace of mind. Also, you NEED to know that there can be something else to be done, something high tech, something no one has thought of before. You will soon visit the shamans in the jungle to cast spells just so you can upgrade your HiFi a little more.
There are these people, try not to be one of them.
There's lots of examples of 30$ amps sounding better than ones in the 3-4 digit ranges (at few watts).
Spitting out a bit of digital audio is not exactly taxing for even a basic PC... so much BS in audio these days and not enough good engineering...
I do use external DACS though some sound cards are excellent with silly noise levels (very low).
I would suggest you measure the noise with a SMPS and a Linear supply, you wont see much difference, maybe a slight reduction in SMPS switching frequency but hardly noticeable amongst all the other noise present...

A 50\60 Hz transformer, rectifiers, and filter caps is.ANYTHING BUT linear. And I don't think one could pick for audio a much worse in-the-box frequency range to rectify from, either, in-band harmonic products and ringing galore. I'll take a good outboard smps any day. Keep the noise out of the audio band.
I use a Raspi2 running Kodi (made to be a media center) with a connected usb hard drive of flac files, opto connected to a DSP DAC. No fans, never stutters, always works, easy controlling (using Yatse) it from my phone or various pads. With flac, theres no 'customized to sound good'. Either the data is streamed out correctly or it isnt, and a raspi with Kodi l has much less nonsense going on than a pc with windows. Wouldnt trade the pi for any other media centers ive seen.
