Full Range Speaker Photo Gallery

Hello.

I built a little speaker with a Lyeco ly-401f. Sounds very good, but need a subwoofer. I want to build a BIB speaker with these drivers.

I haven’t heard them but i believe that, from the changes in the parameters from their other 8s, this driver is more marketing (to be able to say it is Alnico), as the magnet strength looks to be way down.

It will thou, at least in the sims, will produce bass unlike some of th eother 8", but getting the box Q down means a BIG box, aperiodic loading or OB.

Not quite fullrange, but I thought I would post these anyways. Fostex 108e sigma, and an Eminence Delta 12lf. First order on the fostex, second order on the Eminence, centered around 300Hz. I'm quite thrilled with them, and have been so for some time. Still a little bit of tweaking that I would like to do, but I guess that never really ends....

Wood VS MDF

Sounds like you got a real deal on that plywood. I sure wood like to know (sp. pun intended) what is the reason behind your discovery that the MDF cabinet sounds lifeless and the Baltic Birch ply version is musical. I know that the use of certain woods, chosen for their resonance qualities is essential in the manufacture of some musical instruments where the vibration of the case itself contributes to the harmonic tone structure of the instrument, but that is the opposite of what we want in a good loudspeaker cabinet. In this instance, as we know, we strive to avoid cabinet vibrations and resulting 'colorations'. Still in the end the proof is in the pudding and if the plywood cabinets make magic for you and the MDF ones miss the mark then you should IMO consider yourself very fortunate having been sucessful in your goal after making only two practice cabinets. Magic tone in audio is elusive, but well worth the quest.

This thread is 14 years old, but I have some 2019 MDF-based Andrew Jones ELACS, and I can hear the box. The drivers are fine, but the enclosure is crap. MDF might be closer to inert, but Stradavari were made from wood. I'm going to look for some Baltic Birch, but I bet most any cold-weather wood will sound better than MDF. Think about it - the enclosure vibrates at the same rate as much of the music, and it will color the cone to some extent. If MDF is absorptive (and I am way out on a limb here) It could potentially damp the drivers and rob tone. Plus, its just a gummy, cheap material that just is not of "instrument" quality.

Fire away.

Well, I think in short in a Strad, or a solid body Fender Strat, the material from which it's fabricated is there to help make the sound, while an ideal speaker enclosure would be made from material that is at least inert -if not a "sink" for all spurious vibrations not immediately associated with the music.

But since the huge majority of real world speakers - and most particularly affordable mainstream commercial products- are constrained to real world materials, I'd supect designers such as Andrew would probably admit that the bean-counters will only let them get away with spending so much money on the boxes in a pair of speakers retailing for, let's say under $800?

Expect to hear now a variety of options on combinations of materials and construction / bracing techniques to mitigate enclosure resonances and approach the ideal alluded to above - not the least of which will be Open Baffles are the cure for all the evils of monkey coffins.

Just finished two ml-tqwt's for Alpair 10.3

Design (or dimensions) is pretty close to frugel xl, but I wanted straight enclosures and no curved back. Port tuning is adjustable. Sounds pretty good actually and the amount of bass is absolutely ridiculous! Lower cutoff is somewhere around 40Hz, line tuning about 45-50Hz.
There is bump at 200Hz and severe dip at 230Hz, need to figure out that. Propably some harmonics going on and messing things which is typical for tqwt enclosures.
Also lots of presence from those alpairs but in a good way, not annoying at all. Highs are little bit "harsh" sometimes. Overall, satisfied results.

Finally finish full range TB W5-2143, and I am very impressed by the result and of course the amazing sound coming up from such a small driver and small enclosure.
Everything done by myself from the cutting, assembling and painting, very difficult here in Philippines find a good wood so no choice I used a 16mm marine plywood for the main body and from the last project a 24mm baltic birch plywood for the top and bottom. Stained with Nescafe instant coffee 3 coat and finish with 4 coat of Konig polyurethane and a little touch of design on the front for cover some imperfection of the plywood. The enclosure follow the Tabaq design, sound stage and clarity of middle and hight freq is outstanding for do not talking about the punching warm bass response…..all the best

I wanna get me a pair of those Sonidos. I’m eager to find out how they sound.
They sound like this ....

IMG_5562.JPG

Many years ago I built a small horn speaker from the Sonido FR 5". Last Summer I finished FR BR (Full Range Bass Reflex) speakers with the new SWR069 drivers from Sonido and the sound really knocked me off my ... the chair.

I have never ever missed anything when listening to my small horn speakers, but suddenly I got the same "audio signature" but a lot of it, nice and clean mid and highs but a much lower low.
At the moment I am using a small compact 3W Chian-amplifier (6P1) and that is definitely enough for my 20sqm livingroom.
