I would suggest that the front edge is 'just right' for the driver/chamber mounting and just rebate the front edge of your 'teardrop' around the mounting flange to form a 'seamless' line - sometimes when adding dress rings, protection grills, etc, the effect is a creation of unwanted peaks/interference leading to a deterioration that is a most unpleasant surprise.
It looks like the manufacturer already has this in mind when they formed the front edge profile - perhaps you can just carefully 'BMW it' if you want it to be white.

Hello Hesener
hope to get some work done after this business trip. Work life is killing all my hobbies. I made up my mind on the transit from driver to the enclosure. I made up 6mm high ring, and will make a 45 degree chamfer on it. And if I am not happy, I can always put the Alu ring on it, as it will be a chamfer.
hehe BMW paint...sharp and fast...I like that.
Danny
Would the actual form matter much if the features are smaller than the wavelength in question (e.g. 17mm for 20kHz if I remember correctly)?
Hi James,
that is what I am about to do. With the 6mm chamfer, I will create seamless transition from driver to the box. The chamfer will be 45gedree, 6mm wide and 6mm tall. I think its not that bad
Hesener:
The form would matter to me, it would look unfinished, if you know what I mean. It would bug me every time I look at it.I want it to look as professional as possible.
The white paint is mainly to please the other half, and to match it to our furniture, which is dark brown, it will make a nice contrast. I think white goes with every other color 🙂

Yes I understand, I always try to do the same, give it reasonable effort to make it look good. And then I usually spoil it using 6 different screws to fix that nice frontplate 😀

Ahahahah...or build the speaker, great sound, and the box looks like bag of c....p 🙂
That it why I want to have this one as best as possible, after I want to build a small monitor like speaker (F120A + T90) for the bedroom. Seen this videos of some chinesse guy with this set up plus some tube amp, and it looked and sounded (youtube sound, but good mic I presume) very good actually.
And perhaps then when I get to move to a house, I can build my dream system 🙂 (which changes constantly)
Danny
I am so happy right now 🙂
One of the forum guys (I will not mention his name just to prevent overflow of requests in his PM box) did a CAD rendering for me.
I cannot say how much I appreciate this gesture. It must have been a lot of work.
Thank you R.S. for your help. Gave me a great idea about the speakers, they looks, and also bumped the WAF considerably 🙂

Danny, No worries.
I cant really do any for other people at the moment (got my own project to get finishing!)
Add to that another, in a more realistic room setting/lighting 🙂

That is really really beautiful work... I admire it. The significant better half tells me now that she has seen it she will permit me to put them in the living room 🙂
Every time she had a look at the raw enclosures, she said they are either a vase or Bee hives :S imagine that....
I have been following your project too.

Derek, I think we took the same inspiration from that one certain speaker 🙂

P.S.: the leg is just borrowed from you 🙂 decided on something else, of course more challenging :S

All good stuff...
He Danny,
I am glad you are progressing and happy to help with ideas, past or present!
It took me about 5 years to perfect the teardrop Manger housing and alloy stand so don't worry about the time things take....
Cheers
Derek.

Hi wesayso
yes separate. you have any thoughts on that? I came up with some curved stand with good inside volume (has to be calculated when finished i.e. fill with water to see how much). i know this is not the proper way to design, but I think any volume above 12L will provide enough bass for the small apartment room, and in that case any woofer able to play in that volume down to let's say 40-50Hz. All I really need is a little help at the bottom, nothing more.
Also the leg/stand/woofer section was my wifes idea, I let her have a part in this. She made compromises when it came to furnishing the living room, in exchange I let her design the aesthetic side a little bit 🙂

Great stuff... must be rewarding to hear it play after all this time.
Is it just the enclosure + driver? Or are there damping materials involved...
I've been thinking about what type of bass assist you could design into this setup you created. I don't have a clear answer. A few pages back you had a side firing woofer in a round, drum like enclosure. I think that fits the later design best and side firing woofers seem to be the new hot thing to do, judging the latest show reports 🙂.

Yes just driver and enclosure, no damping or anything. Just took them out today for basic primer, then comes the fun part - filler and a lot of sanding 🙁
Will post some pics if people want to see them
I had it running through Onkyo receiver. I was surprised how loud they get and how little excursion is involved. I am playing with the idea of closed box, and then the helper woofer at the bottom..... will do some more testing when sanded down.

Hi Wes, yes that was also my previous drawing, an idea about the stand. However, after some tests with 12" drivers I concluded that anything above 8" is too much for this apartment house. It multiplies the bass in other rooms to great extent...
So in the end I will be using a stand that me and my wife came up with, esthetically and functionally pleasing 🙂 for both...

I think the trick would be to run the bass helper woofer low enough in level not to detract from the full ranger. I'd rather have a 15" playing at low levels than an 8" that has to work to keep up. But it's your call ultimately.
I had big speakers with 15" woofers in a very small apartment. All it showed to me they needed to work way less to be pleasing. They could go loud of coarse, but that just wasn't necessary to give very good and balanced sound.
That coming from a guy that is going to 25x 3.5" on each side 😀....
