FE138ES-R - Dave, your dream came true...

::best fostex ever cab design

hi,

i have been in reading only mode for a while.
my beautiful 2 x 3 watt 2A3 amps found their way to my home and i am fully enjoying them.
even though i have to pump the volume all the way up to feed my 89db rogers studio 1A.
they sound utterly faboulous.
http://www.dhtrob.com/projecten/magique_1_en.htm
i even wondered even if i had to pursue to build the cabinets around my 138 esr's.
but i am also so curious to what these speakers in combination with the magiques will be up to and wouldn't that be a shame.
my slow paced route to heaven? who will tell.

i am now wondering reading all the above if there is a soul willing and able to supply us
(i count 5 owners here on this forum) who are anxiously awaiting a design for a cabinet.
i thought that scott was going to work with the new numbers and do his magic or did i read him wrong?

OK, I surrender. Once the data is in, I'll do a double-mouth Spawn box for the 138ES-R, as there seems to be some interest.

So, might as well ask in advance: what do you want? Trad. gain type long path, or short waveguide style enclosure? (& if the former, stepped or ~constant expansion, or a combination?) Focused or column style? As Dave reckons it's potentially one of the best units Fostex have made, it'd be a shame not to do it justice.

and i agree.
wouldn't it be a shame.
hope you guys will find the enegy and inspiration to help us out here.

greetings from holland

Ping Dave,
any Progress in the plans yet ?

I had to get the data from scott again -- an "accident" with some powerful magnets caused some "problems" with my laptop drive...

Here is the quick & nasty drawing...

Hurray !!

You really made my day, Dave ! Thank you so much, i´m really happy now.

i allready thought, that some kind of "accident" causes the delay, (well, be
always careful, where you put those drivers...)

and they are smaller than i expect, at a hight of 117,5cm the driver position is at
58,75cm, that´s really low, maybe i should angle it a bit...

the sad thing is, that i´m allready out of money for this month, i´ll have to wait
another week, till i can buy some wood.

Not actually speakers -- a pair of pmagnets with weird shape -- they jumped out of my hands inconienienty to on top of the laptop where the drive sits.

Yes. We are actually working thru (in private) some of these same details with the similar MBVR for the baby Feastrex.

Yeah, the "comercial" Maiko... very nice design, (i think i´m gonna "steal" some of the
design-ideas for my boxes...), they have almost the same size than the es-r_MBVR.

I just purchased the last pair from Koji at EIFL. I would like impressions from those of you that have some time with them. I will be using them for a desktop system for my office so the speakers will be at approximately 50 cms from me. I want to build something small, maybe a closed box (around 3 liters should do) down to around 130 hz and something below. However since they will only play at very low volumes I think that a ported box can be an option. They will be powered by a Bottlehead sex amp which should do wonders for my application.

HI

I had much other things to do, so to be honest i have got the first listenabel results this Weekend.
I have build some 6 liter closed Boxes (6 liter seems to be to much, i think i will steel some of the volume soon).
Bass is active ( at the moment a Visaton AL 200 which i had laying around)
In this aplication it definitiv needs some filtering. At the moment i am using 15uf, 0,15 mh and 10 ohm in series whith the driver, but i am sure that this is not the last word.
The sound is very promissing, but now it has to burn in, and it will need some further work til it will be good.

Hi Folks,

....I´m, Back !!

well, when was my last post ? 22nd of April ? Time goes by....
I had some severe real-life disturbances (the worst thing was, that my car
died and it took 10 week to clear things out, to get me a new one..)
but today i finally startet building the cabinets, i had bought the wood some 6 weeks ago
and this afternoon we did the first cuts on the sheets, if things go well, and we work at
this rate, i think we´re done in 3 weeks or so.

to Xavier:

congrats to your purchase !! Hm, did Koji-san really did say it was his last pair ?
well, i guessed earlir that the es-r would run out of stock in the late summer...
and you´re really wanna use such great gear ( the es-r´s + sex-amp) for
"just desktop-PC-Speaker" ?? that´s freakin´hilarious awsome !! i really would
like to know what super-stuff you have on your main system.

to Bermhard:

i´m glad to hear that you finally managed to put things together and get the
es-r´s singing...
äh, just out of curiousity: do you have one bass-driver per side ? in what kind enclosure ?
and do you mind telling me what amps do you use ( for main + sub).
and keep in mind, that i´ve noticed that the bass will improve and expand quite a lot
in the first 20 to 30 hours of the burnin in

more later....

No problem with that, but looking at the above picture, if the one closest to the camera is anything to go by, they're at completely the the wrong angle, which is what triggered my concern. 😱 Hopefully it was just a dry run of laying out the parts & no glue was involved.

You arw eight there... it needs to be aligned with the horn bisector and not the one side.

Hi Mirko,

do you have one bass-driver per side ? in what kind enclosure ?

At the moment one Bass in a closed enclosure, but i hope to finish my new enclosures this weekend, then it will be two reflex enclosures.

what amps do you use ( for main + sub).

main is an AlephJ😎 😎 😎 ,sub is an old Thomessen Sub module at the moment which is not good in this Place because it is mono and it has a 24db crossover ( i think i need 6 or 12 db) I think changing this will be the next step.

Filter changed meanwhile, but its still not the last version, so it is no use to report it now.

Hi Bernhard,

Wow... an AlephJ... !! that really is an adequate amp for the es-r`s ! did you build it yourself ?
(btw, we really should met someday, cause i never heard an Aleph and always wanted to,
i would like to know if it really can compete with a good tube)

Thomessen-module sounds fine, heard only good things about them, and it seems that
almost everyone uses them. but x-over with24db is of cause much to much.
and otoh mono shouldn´t be a prob as long as you have 2 subs aligned with the
main speakers and your module has enough guts to drive 2 subs in parallel at 4 Ohms.
