Eton with Excel

Beste Hans

When my filters are ready and housed, and i have bought new good matching audiocomponents (Iam looking for the Vincent sv238 powerplant, and a good CDplayer - it's all about the money, especially because i'am a student). The most important part is the amplifier, (eventuele componenten mag je van mij meenemen zodat de luistersessie niet zolang uit hoeven te stellen.. ik wil graag goed voor de dag komen en optimale performance laten horen).

I also have tested the m15's in a dipole panel, but it was hard to make a good crossover (the rolloff was to steep, and the woofer had to go up to 275hz before rolling off). The sound of the midunit in dipole configuration was very good and (yes Hans) there where no problems at all,

So in your opinion the W15 sounds coloured? that certainly has not been my experience.

No no no, I meant: ppl might expect the poly cone of the M15 to sound coloured compared to the magnesium W15. In listening I found this is not the case: the M15 is equally uncoloured and has a much larger workable area. According to the datasheets of Seas (which I tend to trust), the W15 does have less distortion IIRC.

I suppose its just one of the problems with very expensive drivers. I'd like to change the W15CY's for the new CH model and see how it compares, but I'd also like to try the M15CH, the scan 12M/4631G00 and 15M/4531K00 and one of the 5" mid/bass scans, oh and an eton or two, just to see which one would sound best in my application.

It may be that the poly seas mid sounds as good as or better then the W15CY and you cant ignor the extra sensativity. But when deciding what drivers to use in our projects we have to look at all the specs and decide which one "seems" to be better one paper because we cant afford to buy all the drivers we would like to consider for the design.

It would be nice if say speaker shops had a set of drivers for rent, you pay a deposit and get say five pairs of drivers to use, you decide which one you like the best then give the others back.

Dear Sherwin,

can you please answer one of my questions cause you propably forgot to. here's the question:

You said that this Excel special unit is one of the best midranges you have heard. Can you name the others that you have made a comparison with?

Also, anyone know if the Eton 11-581 can be crossovered as high as 280Hz. Hobby Hifi says it is perfect till 1.200hz but very expensive.

Thank you again.

Here's Kharma GR CE-1.0 that uses two 11" Etons:

Hans L - could you post or email me your XO for the M15 & W26. I would like to check them out as I'm considering a very similar system. Thanks 😀
I'm listening to a pair of dipole prototypes with these drivers (and one with dual L21) through LspCad Pro's Aural emulator. This is a realtime simulation of a filter, in my case an active filter. Still interested? 😉

I could have a go at making a passive version that mirrors my current filter slopes, but that would mean I would have to measure impedance and fiddle around with the components for an evening or so to get reasonably close. I'm afraid I don't have time for that at the moment.

Michael,

The mid (incl basmid) units i've heard:

-SS 18w8544p
-SS 18w8546
-SS 18w8545K001

-Peerless HDS 134
-Peerless HDS 182
-Peerless CSX series

-Focal polyglasses
-Seas excel magnesium cones
-Seas standardline MT14, en another polyprop

-Vifa (that big dome)
-Vifa 17wp200
-Vifa premium (little)

-Thiel c79 (as good as the excel, but lower sens) and c44

And more.....

Sherwin

Thank you again Serwin and others,

It's really intresting that you have compared the Seas Excel polypropylen M15CH001 with the magnesium and with the Accuton, wich the last are unfortunately unavailable here in Greece. Have heard any Etons, Focal polykevlars (midrange), Audax, PHL ? How did you select the Focal Polykevlar 11" for bass? Have you compared it with others? What about the tweeter? Why not a ribbon? Have you compared it with other tweeters?

Michael

P.S sorry for "overstressing" you with my questions but I think you are one of the few that have the M15CH001 in this forum.

Any opinions for Ring-Radiator by Scan-speak?

Scan Speak ringradiator is the best tweeter I ever heard, but I must say I heard only dome tweeters.

ScanSpeak 9300, 9500 , 9700, 9800, 9900
Seas Millenium, kt27, kt26
Dynaudio, Esotec
Vifa metaldome and ringradiator.
And some Peerless and Audax tweeters.

I have not listened to the Esotar, but I've heard the budget Morel tweeters (MDT 29 & 32). The local DiY-shop has only a limited choice of demo speakers available. I also have heard a old expolinear ribbon, but I was not impressed.

The ring radiator is in my opninion a little bit directional. But the vertical and horizontal dispersion is still good enough. On the plots of ScanSpeak you can see that the off-axis response is not as good as the new ScanSpeak 7100 or some other fine dome tweeters.
