I wouldnt worry too mucj about using the SEAS excel mag with the M15CH. Linkwitz uses the 8" all the way up to 1500 in the orion and that is meant to be one of the best loudspeakers you can get.

Also people use midranges crossed over at 250hz to 10" bass drivers with moving masses of twice the SEAS 8" driver and even more. Dont worry about it.

There is the issue of matching however, I do not know the sound of the poly mid or how it would match tonaly with the mag excel or the eton. 250hz seems to scream danager to me when crossing two drivers that could sound very different.

I'd like to see some opinions from people who have used the poly mid and thier comments on its sound, appart from good, what are its characteristics.

The only thing I would think twice about is the crossover frequency of 250 Hz. The Xmax of the M15 is VERY low (about 1mm linear each side), and at a few hundred Hz you'll reach that very soon 🙁

What's you x-over frequency Sherwin?

Grtz, Joris

P.S. Sherwin: you know who I am 🙂

I think it matches really well: Ascendo M 32,000$ (look at the photo)
But it uses the 8" with the 11" Eton.

Sherwin, with your 275/300Hz crossover had you got any x-max problems? How loud do you listen? How is the mix with the focal 11", can you see phase problems or anything?

Could I cross the Eton 11" drivers higher? (e.g 300hz)

Thanks for the help guys,

Sherwin what did you mean with changing your audio components? Are you not satisfied with these loudspeakers?
Can you name some other really good midranges 5-7" like the Excel M15CH001, that you have heard too?

Hobby-hifi in a test refered to Excel M15CH001 as the best in the test and one of the very best for the magazin. In the test also Audax PR170Z0, Focal Audiom 6WM, Focal 7k6411 took part.

Dear People,

I cross the m15ch around 275hz with 12db/oct, and there are no problems. The real Xmax of the m15ch is bigger then the lineair Xmax of 2mm (this Xmax is for the extremely low distortion levels).

We have also measured the distortion levels, and there's nothing to worry about.

I have tested the top sections with bypass (so the midrange get's the full range near the lower frequencies) as a 2 way, on a listinening event, and there also where no problems (funny).

(Audio components switching, i ment that i was intended to buy new audio equipment like a new amplifier and cdplayer within a year of a half)

Cheers,

Sherwin

Dear Micheal,

I have no problems with Xmax, and i can play very loud without any kind of distortion. I have chosen for a 3 way system, because you have much better resolution and midband dynamics..

btw, the m15ch00 is capable of high dynamic power handling without any kind of compression,

The only thing I'd be wary about with the M15 in an open baffle is excursion. Obviously you would need to design the speaker so zero open baffle roll off compensation was required on the mid and a steep crossover otherwise xmax would be easily reached.

Seas seem to have a hard time making sensative drivers for some reason, most of the excels are quite poor but do sound great. I suppose what would be nice is the M15 or W15CH to both have 90+ sensativity and be mid/bass not just mid drivers as the M15 is, so they have more xmax, and more dB sensativity for the W15. But then thats gonna be hard.

Either way how stiff is the cone in the M15? obviously it is well damped as the frequency respose is testiment to, which is not surprising. But one of the reasons I thought the mag cones were meant to excel (haha) other drivers was they didnt show any signs of breakup in the passband. However I would have thought the M15 would break up in the range it is used.

Well Exmotion has a Seas 26cm woofer, Eton has better sensitivity. (And two of them...) What do you think?
It also uses the Millenium tweeter which is not the best out there... Raven, Aurum Cantus, Eton ER4, well I will see

Thank you everybody for this helpful info. 😀

Here's the Exmotion:

Sherwin, thats a great looking system!!! I have a pair of Focal 11K7511 woofers that I'm dying to make enclosures for. I will be ripping the MDF tommorow. I will be using a 70 liter enclosure (minus the bracing and port). I have heard another system using this woofer, and was stunned!

BTW, love that grey colour. Is this some sort of a hammered enamel finish?

Goldenboy,

It's RAL 7002 OLIVE GREEN for the low cabinet and a fault of the spraypainter to spray the top cabinets in RAL 7003 (little greener).

Both colors are slightly sprayed with metallic (but the attic has bad light, so it's hard to see the colors nicely).

Look at the audiorack cilinders, and match them with the cabinets, you will see they are light green 😀.

I have a prototype mainpanel dipole with the M15 crossed over at 350Hz to two Seas L26's (and LP at 3000Hz). This keeps it within linear excursion at all times.

I hear no problems at all as far as different drivers are concerned. The M15 just sounds extremely neutral. Smoother than the W15, but not obviously colored compared to it. It is also so easy to work with, you'd almost think one has to put in some extra effort to get it wrong 😉

P.S. Hya Sherwin :wave2: Are you ready for that listening session? Already know the mid and bass quite well, but I'm awfully curious how the entire package sounds!
