Time to take a break, been working on the board since I posted this morning... more than 12 hours straight now....
Unloaded my supply is 72V, and connected to the amp is 70V.
Please make sure to use 5% or better zeners for the rail regulators, 10% ones can give rails to the front in the 60V area...
I decided to compromise some of the look of the first few (af the last) designs for more safety and serviceability. Also it is a little larger... but still within 200mm width (350mm heatsink is advised though) and you will still need the heatspreaders, or need to mount your output pairs with short wires...
I know I am going to dream PCBs all night again :/

Hi Carlos,
I completely agree with you on pcb layout, parts can be too close for worse reasons than serviceability reasons and a little space doesnt hurt to avoid unwanted interactions between sensitive circuit nodes. I have learned over the last couple of weeks doodling up some boards that a layout can truly be the straw that breaks the camels back, it can either make or literally break the circuit, or cause it to perform sub optimally. Too much or too little can be bad, its a balance of logic I myself need a few more years to try and understand the complexities of, I must admit to a hugely new found respect for the art of layout.
Taj, Todd?, say are you living close to Tsawassen nowadays?.
Colin

Hi Colin,
You have mail. Short answer: sort of. I can't spell Tsawwassen, so I bought a house next door in Ladner. 😎

I feel like a corpse this morning....
Last few things to sort out on board then it is etching time again...
This time around I have a good feeling about the layout...

Thank by the comments Todd.... and dear Nordic
Also thank you dear Colin.
Dear Nordic.
Despite better, your layout is already dense....there are waste of space with nothing there.... parts are still very close one each other...there are more room to put them apart.
This is bad to measure, bad to fix, bad to inspect...and not so good to avoid coupling, as part near each other couple one each other.
So...the reduction of copper lines length can be good watching for one point of view, but if they result parts near one each other this may bad watching from this second point of observation.
Compromise....not to make all "folks" almost touching one each other and not to make all parts too much distant.... have to take car about....the board is still empty..there are spaces that has nothing over"..and islands of big population.
I told yesterday that i have found it lovely..but today, with more attention, i have perceived something not perfect....maybe you can do it even better if you want.
regards,
Carlos

Attention with the transformer losses of voltage when loaded.
Use a resistance as load, in both rails, and measure the transformer, after rectification and filtering, to be sure the voltage will have when hardly used... when high power will be drained by the amplifier.
the amplifier, even using 4 ohms loads and 70 volts into the big voltage supply, the main supply, will have 4 amperes, or a little bit more each rail...so...to 70 volts, try 15 ohms (big watt) to see how many volts it will develop under hard load testing.
So.... the second supply, the rail zener diodes, have to be adjusted to be lower than this value, to make the rail regulator totally efective.
There are specification we call here "pra inglês ver"...means to "english man to see"....and this is something i have to explain you..and will do it next mail..will type in portuguese and will ask google to make english version about a historical things happened between English people and Brazilian people.
Well.... those things means fake specification, not real specification... i see transformer when say 70 volts and 5 amperes that may have to keep 70 volts when 5 amperes will be drained.... so...without load, the voltage must be bigger, when you loose under load, will go to specifications...but here things are not precise...and you never find this..always lower than specifications.
Will explain the reason of my concerns, the need to test transformer power to adjust rail zener diodes (important to adjust correctly)
We cannot decide to loose into the rail 2 volts, or 3, or 5 volts.... we really have to test the transformer in advance...your transformer...and them to decide how many volts the rail regulator will reduce... considering the losses of voltage...the drop of voltage into the transformer under severe load.!
Please, be attention with that.... plays enormous part into the audio quality reproduction.

Carlos

To English man to see....only to English men eyes.
Nearly 200 years ago, the British people came to Brazil, were invited to build a railway line, a road of iron, and the presence here in this land, not only left hundreds of descendants, but also some terms, some idioms in English, some idiomatic expressions .... If they are not registered in the language, at least, is the knowledge of the current language spot.
The local climate, climate Nordestino, too hot, even in the shade the temperature passes of 34 gráus centigrade, and it is very uncomfortable for the locals, picture for the British who wore heavy costumes, from the Victorian era, things are not adapted to the local conditions, and then were abandoned for the lighter clothes.
The pace of work was much slower than would achieve in England, the heat, mosquitoes and the tradition of eating food that have heavy spice, containing much pepper, much garlic, onion, kumina and some hervas also generated a state of numbness, drowsiness uncontroled after lunch, when all slept and lost more than an hour of work for it.
That food use to put them to sleep, including British citizens who resisted until they understood this need.
But the British became friends of the Brazilians, for empathy and there was great need for closer ... they had parties, and these parties were divided into two periods, the first and second only to English for tôdos, FOR ALL, from which emerged the FORRÓ name that is a way to speak (badly) the word for all.
In this first period the wives of inglêses came to the parties, the climate was boring, was flat for the character of the Brazilian people, had a lot of respect and a lot of "pomp and circumstance", little drink, music English very slow .. appropriate situation to even English .
However, latter, around midnigth, the women were taken home in chariots, and when not heard most of the tropel horses to distance the party really began .... FOR ALL!, to British and Brazilian ... The British use to remove their heavy clothes and dress something more light and Brazilians arrived in large quantity, employees of the railroad and not employees of the British rail and related loud, very beverage, dance and hot women arrived in costumes that were summaries, and came unaccompanied in many cases, sometimes in groups of women accompanied by a single man, which was not there to take care of girls ... on the contrary, the guy left the girls alone into the party and try to find them into the following day.
And with that began the FORRÓ, adaptation, a new way to read and understand the words FOR ALL, which today called a type of music, a rhythms that invaded the Caribbean and Central America ... guess who took it to there?
-- The British personel from iron roads!
Nobody belonged to anybody, much drink during the lively parties, had not heads or staff, all them the same into the happy spirit into the party environment .... When the next day's work would respectfully ... from dealing with hierarchy and distance.
Interestingly comment on the style of dance, where the girls danced with the legs slightly between open, with space between the thighs for the companion of its own dance adjusted correctly .... this produce equilibrium to the dancers and left uncontroled emotions ... The music is still, absurdly exciting to the eyes of who attends dance and is good in the eyes of those who see it, also does well to the heart of who dance .. hehehe .. so to speak.
But periodic happens visitors arriving..the British inspectors, they came with Forecast Production ... meters of rails ready and things ... everything to be checked, inspected, confirmed, recorded and reported to England when return (when actually returned .. as it was rare ).... and these men who came to inspect, not adapted into this region .... Were victims of the trick called "PRA ENGLISH VIEW" ... "TO ENGLISHMEN EYES ONLY"
Heads Brazilian and English, arranged, previously, in advance, which would ... And which were given to the delay, it was aligning trails and woods, which were arranged along the way, along the major road where it should be ready a large segment of the railroad, which in fact was not ready .... And then arranged in the woods arranged rails, shrubs away more or less some stones ... and far, who would have inspect with binoculars , fail to see that everything was wrong, that nothing was ready ... That only had prepared bad weed, wood and paths arranged to imitate a road iron long, when only 1 kilometer was ready, from the point of observation insurance ... who said they could not go on account of snakes indigenous and furious ( no longer had at the time).
Under inspection with binoculars and lunetas everything seemed perfect, when in fact it was not.
If the inspector not be satisfied and demanded an inspection a closer, then a work or employed ... employees of Railways, selected among thousands, very beautiful, especially seductive appeared as if by miracle, waving the body appears smiling on the way to the inspector.
This was the plan two .... the plan "B" ... A beautiful young woman, dressed in provocative way, it sending lots of charm direclty to the inspector ..... Ahahhahah .. well ...... The girl was selected to be tempting for any male living ... And was offered into the inspector ears..brazilian use to tell into the inspector years that can have the girl as a friend for company .
the girl, in the reality an employee, use to be invited to join them for some drinks ... where the other engineers would disappear, as if by leaving both the charm alone ..... Understand?
Then, from applicable, in Northeast Brazil, the têrmo "Pra English see" became misleading propaganda mean, tricks, inverdades, exaggerations in the specifications and things of the genre.

Carlos

Ah! Uncle Charlie, that was a brilliant story!
(I was about to say "refreshing" but I felt, physically, just the opposite...very hot 😀 ).
You are perfecting your narrative skills to a point that I could see what you explained so charmingly, as a Brazilian movie, in colors, with those beautiful sexy girls tempting the "poor" English men
I shall plan a "Forró" soon... 🙂
Love and kisses,
M
PS: never planned to write your "memories"? Maybe bigger money than in power amp designing, ja, ja! 😀

Yes Max, women in this place are magic
I have landed here 17 years ago...i have never returned to Rio de Janeiro... was one of those girls that drive me mad.
They are special... all they have in mind is to have a good husband to dedicate their life to him...wonderfull idea i think.
Able to sacrifices to the husband in such an old style we do not find anymore and anyway.... Husband is God here!
Also charming, the way they walk, the skin collor and all physical characteristics made them very special.
We have hundreds of Germans, Dutch and North European arriving this place every year...or they stay, or the most common is to return with a local girl to have a marriage.
The English people that have worked into the rail road never returned, now descendents are here, redish people walking happy into the streets...swetting a lot...but happy.
ahahahhha!
beautifull place this one!

Sorry not much to report back yet, worked 15 hours on P1,the day before, and 19 hours yesterday.... Busy soldering again now, nearly fell asleep on the soldering iron at 3 this morning... 😛
Finaly, a few builds later I figured out the problem, a small connection in the eagle schematic... which meant boards and schematic were consistant with each other... but still not operational...
Bias is rock stable... (amazingly even more than the smaller amps we build up to now).
Wife went to bed allready so I will resist puting music through there now.
The bad news... Carlos hates the layout...
The good news, I might be able to revive and repair the previous layout to the point where it will work.
Also there were some thermal issues to sort out, as not all component wattages and dissipation were communicated through correctly at the outset.
All them being fixed in the latest version which is now working..
I guess there could still be the odd groundloop, but that we will hear when I connect up a speaker in the morning... for now I am going to believe that it is perfect and try to get a good night's sleep for a change.

Hate is not the correct word, i am just not happy with empty spaces
But those details we gonna adjust between us, and soon, and will result everybody happy and entirelly satisfied.
This baby (the final board) is beeing hard to born, we may need to make a Cesarian Surgery to bring him to life.

The baby have born.... pretty good board now
great, excelent, pretty good job, nice, harmonic, ballanced, simetrical, good to look.
I am very happy with this one.
And we are testing, rigth now, this board working.. having conversations with Nordic into MSN.... adjusting together..soon we will finish this stuff to start production.
And them..you will be very happy and ME TOO!

Sorry don't have much to say - severe sleep deprevation!!!!!!!!!
before I managed to blow a little transistor which I now need to replace, I did have a reasonably good listen... The midrange is to die for.... think this amp will be awesome when fully tuned in.
before I managed to blow a little transistor which I now need to replace, I did have a reasonably good listen... The midrange is to die for.... think this amp will be awesome when fully tuned in.
Was about to kick the amp after desoldering and testing every transistor without finding a fault...
Thought, what the hell, and plugged it all in again just to see if maybe something was diffirent...
And hahaha it works... must have been a cold sodler spot, as it worked this morning too...
My unit is still a little underbiased as I just wanted to see if I could find the fault without burning anyting...
I am most surprised at how good this design is in realtion to not destroying parts after errors...
It is sounding very good, after some more run in and adjustment I will connect it to a decent speaker in the morning...
What I am hearing at this point is indeed very good!
Well done Carlos, and thanks for the patience...
Now me is going to bed, was so hounded by this whole thing I could not sleep until 4 this morning.
I am a walking dead, but a very happy walking dead tonight.

Good news nephew.... i hope you will fell it good enougth to you
We will find the underbias factor you are talking about.
Precision sound very different from HRII... also different from Dx Standard... remembers the Electrocompaniet sound...also some old powerfull Marantz, but seems to have a little bit more focused and present treble than the big old Marantz... bass controled alike HRII, not extended, not loosen...not long bass... and into the voice the big magic... sadly i do not know exactly what made that.... i was thinking was the CCS in the place of bootstrapp..but i have switched with a relay in my home and i was having doubts.
Were is the voice advantage?.... i really do not know..interesting those things... if you input generator, the unit is flat.... mid ranges are normal in level... also seems that square wave is fine..... well...maybe some harmonics, as i do not have spectrum analizer i do not know from where those rich voices comes from.
We start to listen and in two seconds we perceive huge power and special voices!... if you are geting out from the shower, and woman voice sounds from the music, you will cover yourself very fast...as the woman seems to be around!
Once, listening i said to my ex wife... was in September last year...
I said:
- "Yes honey!".
She told me that said nothing...the female voice came from the movie was playing into the computer and was realistic... was AVI movie into the computer.
Into Simulator it seems from "outside planet"!..but simulators always shows good results... very good mood those simulator have.... all tests shows good results... at least into Multisim 2001.
I hope someone will have the interest to build, to test into laboratory, to find strange things, harmonics and distortions to tell me something about... and if someone will be able to explain me what is going on related those magic voices, i will be ethernally gratefull to remove me from this sad ignorance that bothers me a lot...I do not know where that mid range astounding quality are borning into the circuit.
Tomorrow, after 9 morning, (Your time... Cape town time) i will be in stand by mode into MSN..we gonna fix that and we will celebrate together!
We gonna measure a lot of delicious VBE, we gonna check many nice currents, we gonna try better current to drivers...we gonna make big magic together.... let' tweak a little because this is very pleasant.
I would be happy if you upgrade your MSN dear nephew, or to install Skype, to allow us to use voice communications... at least from me to you, as i prefer to talk them to type.... type is slower!... i am old....every minute is a minute...not to loose one single minute.
It is the same old story.... i have one amplifier made that is excelent to bass reproduction, the Standard... the HRII excelent for treble, and the Precision special for voices.... my God!... i would be happy to make something less strange and more ballanced.... the worse is that level is fine folks..it is not level!

Nothing broken uncle charly, I just reduced from 3mv to 2mv over that resistor, will push for 3mv this morning...
OK, biased it up to the proper point according to Charly's sim..
Jaw dropping stuff...
Had to tear myself away from there to come and type now, and that is just one channel!!!!!!!!!!
Rimshots sounds like gunshots, incredible punch/dynamics, in fact just plain painfull faceing the speaker cone at close distance when the drummer as much as looks at his kit.
Midrange, which I picked up was good even before we reach optimal opertional points, is superb, I suspect some harmonics has to be in play, as it does not sound "the same" as the majority of other SS amps do. In fact it is like a warm blanket on a cold day. That warm comforting sound.
Detail
Was listening to the weeping song at one point, suddenly the hands clapping like castanettes (sp.), sounded like hands, you can hear how each clap is slightly diffirently formed from the previous, can alsmot visualise the hands clapping... :O
Listened to some piano, awesome, the sound can go through the full range of the piano's notes without "changeing the sound" halfway up the scale, like most amps do...
At pretty loud level it drove the heatsink to about 55C, (relatively small test sink (200Wx100Hx40D), and at more normal levels for the size of my little house it dropped back to about 35C, I think It can work on a smaller heatsink than we estimated for most of the volume range most people would use it at... especialy if combined with some thermal switch, or temperature activated fan, for those who do not object to fans.
I do think I will need to run it a little longer though before I set the heatsink bits in stone, as my sink is pretty heavy (large thermal mass - thick fins etc).
The power makes even low volume listening something diffirent, I guess it is because it is able to deliver the dynamic peaks more stress free... I am more of a constructional and materials design type than electronics designer... so I am unable to give you a clear answer on that...
I do however have much exposure to live music and grew up surrounded by quality audio gear and speakers.
I would agree this amp meets the title of the thread "better than HRII"
Lol uncle charly DX Threeway.. Classic for bass, P1 for mids, HRII for tweets.
The HRII was my previous favourite in the range, but that has now changed... damn, that means I am going to have to lay down some cash to get all the hardware needed again.

Ahahahha...very happy uncle Charlie is now!
And you perceive music the same way i use to perceive.
Better to not spend too much money....well.... 90 percent of this material will be good enougth to Precision II, that smashes this Precision I in such a way that remembers a dog running with the tail between the legs and screaming feeling panic..with that noise dogs use to make.
Precision II is the Thunderstorm!.... the bass power seems twice more powerfull and distorts even less.... an animal!
Caím... caím in my language....in yours may be Kah! ymmm! kah! ymmm!
Ahahahahah.
Sorry, but always trying better!
Precision II seems that will be the last one, i do not believe it is possible, at least ME, to do better.

Yes, the tonality struck me as something I have not heard before,
I have sent you some notes on some adjustments I think needs considering by e-mail.
Useing an ipod shuffle as source I heard violin like I have never heard it comming through a CD before....
Was not loud--- well within capability of a 40W speaker i tested it with, BUT IT WAS LOUD!
Music can be at normal volume levels but if a drum or bass instruments demand it, it is like BOOM, here!!! want some more?
Ahh who cares what you wan't, take some more and keep what you have under control!!!!!!!
With a powerfull enough source or a bit more gain, this thing will destroy speakers, I think it is almost dangerous how good the quality stays regardless of the volume increasing... to the point that it will sound nice right up to the point where it exceeds your speakers' real rateing....
If someone added a paremetric equaliser, I don;t think it is possible to beat withthe P2 😛
A picture from first test this morning a with little fullranger..
Behind it my HRII with the power supply connected up to deliver 70V rails (62V reccomended), you can also see a prototype of the speaker protection modules in the HRII, on its floor., in front lies what is left of original HRII prtottype, mostly reincarnated as P1 prototype...
My station has a sponge, but I misplaced it this morning... it will pop out again soon enough...
Also in the picture is the DX Classic prototype... ran the input wire from its RCA socket
yellow meter with temperature probe... ther is a hole drilled in heatsink to accept the probe.... and the two 300VA transformers in series.... hamertone spray in a can rawks...
