DSP Xover project (part 2)

Thank You fluid.
I want to know because I have two USB->I2S board I want compare
V~

If you just want to compare them then a 4PDT switch would do it. Wire the centre row to Najda and the outer rows to the USB to i2s boards. The switch will then toggle between the boards.
Just to report that JLsonds USB to I2S card works with Najda...
I belive that i have had some bad connection ...any way it works

Good news🙂

@Yoke:

Did you change anything on the settings or connections or did it just work? Sounds strange to understand from outside.

What was the decision for that card. I am asking as I have not yet buyed any I2s card. Any recommendations?

Kind regards to Croatia!

Deas any one use JL sound USB to I2S on Najda ?
http://jlsounds.com/uploads/Specifications.pdf

I have problem configurating it

I have connect

USB/I2S------------NAJDA
11 - GND --------- 26 GND
13 - LRCH---------- 25 FSR
14 - DATA----------1 I2S LINE1
15 - BCLK/CLK ----- 23 CKR

also have connected on USB to I2S board as I'm using only USB power
PIN 1 to PIN 12 5V+
PIN 2 to PIN 11 GND

have connect PIN 1 and PIN6 with 4.7kOhm resistor for left justified ?
as Najda uses (quote from NAJDA MANUAL ) ;
''Data format is the most common, i.e. 64 bit clocks per sample period in 32-bit time-slots, with data aligned to the left''

any way, if someone is using JLsounds USB to I2S card, please post your setup which works with Najda...

thanks
A little late answer: I am using the JLSounds with Najda. Connection is as you did, with one difference. The connection of a 4.7 kohm resistor is not needed. I also was uncertain when I installed the board. Asked the developer and he told me that the connection is not necessary

I have tried to search through this thread but i can´t seem to find the info i need regarding my question.

The processor is very interesting for me but i need to know if i can also use it not only for digital stereo source, but also together with analog inputs from my home cinema processor for movie purpose.

Is it configurable to use 3 or 4 analog inputs ?

When is soon - "The Najda Boxed is here!"

Been waiting for some indication on the price level for the boxed Najda. Makes much sens to buy the box as it is always a challenge to box a project.

But if there is not yet any price for the box maybe there is plans if it will be possible to buy the box separately later. Then i could order the Najad board and do a cardboard box setup so the I could start testing filter and setups.

So I got some information. The Najda box can't be ordered separatly. The board, control panel and box comes with a power supply everything installed and tested for 545€. I think the price is good value for what it is. Of course we all count beans but I think we can benefit if Waf can do a business and continue developing Najda as a product.

Another finished Najda

Here are some images from my Najda as a DSP pre-amp for a three way crossover:
I tried a minimal design without many buttons, so I cut up the input board from WAF. Case from Modushop in Italy 2u aluminum enclosure. While the back is hand drilled and a bit imperfect, I had the front made in a professsional workshop with milled display and volume knob recess (plus edding to paint edges black which works remarkably well). Display and IR receiver are behind a shaded plexiglass panel. On/off to switch to turn on Najda (and later also my amplifiers). As the standyby function is quick I do not currently need any mute button but use standby. Volume is controlled from the rotary encoder. There is a switch when pushing the volume wheel, which could be mute, but I plan to make it select the next source (via software update or with an inelegant built in remote control in case). This way I have all the basic functions of a pre-amp. As remarked before in the forum for the general user volume and source would be interesting on display (instead of the dsp preset).
There is a rpi3 with osmc inside via direct i2s - the rpi is supposed to be jittery, but I need to compare for a little longer with the supposedly low jitter Xonar ST soundcard on the coax input to be sure I can hear it (the asynchronous sample rate converter asrc in Najda will clean up a bit of jitter also). I found osmc and the kodi remote app to be more responsive than the web interface of volumio, moode, runeaudio, so I use it despite the video center idea behind it.
I have been playing with FIR, but 1023 taps are too little for a crossover from sub to fullrange at 100 Hz (room modes are minimal phase anyway so IIR prabably better anyway), a combined IIR FIR mode might be nice for an FIR crossover to my (super)tweeter. The IIR capabilities are very nice, once you get the hang of the NUC software. Also the possibility to change presets via remote is great to a-b test different filters. I am happy so far.🙂

Your box look fine but I'm interested how do you feel now afterword would you rather buy the ready maid Najda box.

I to have been thinking how to be able to choose sources so that also my wife can use Najda as a preamp when I'm not at home. I need at least three Toslink maybe an USB and two analogue inputs. I think it could be done if the boards software would support three (=9xinput) pins (5V/0V) output so that the switching between input channel could be done with some relays.
I can of course just use a mechanical switch to alter relays but I don't think it is possible to alter Najdas input channel (toslink, analogue and I2S) from outside the board.

My build got actually slightly more expensive than the boxed version, and as always in DIY I had to solve the occasional problem, such as a transformer with -0+ instead of dual secondaries needed for my supply board etc. For me it was worth it because it now fits to the enclosures of the amps. Also I now have a linear power supply - even though smps probably sounds nice too. Buying the boxed version avoids problems and gives you all the buttons the designer Nic intended it to have.

Regarding the source selection I would email Nic from WAF and ask whether this will be implemented before you buy. As the software updates are probably a lot of work and slow and the codec chip has been discontinued (not sure if the is a drop in replacement?) I would not count too much on furure developments but buy once the current state of Najda fits your needs.

I am waiting for message from Nic when a new batch of Najda boards are ready to ship. I have messaged that I will order a Boxed version.
There are shortcomings with all technical products and there are always "potential" customers who want to inform of features that they need. As an entrepreneur for 27 years in the software business I can say I seen it to many times.
Nic has put together a DIY board so that we can build further on that. Its not the final solution or the last board in the DSP genre. But it is here now and we can enjoin the tremendous effort that it must have been to put it together. If the boxed version bring in a growing business then we might see a new version sometimes in the feature. For now I will use what is on offer today and try to learn as much as I can about DSP as well about amplifier, speakers, music sources etc. And maybe I will also have time to listen to some music 😉

You can use an IR remote control like the apple one to select the input source from any of the available inputs, control volume and select presets. That is the best way to control the Najda if you have the front panel board.

Why don't you use the built in IR receiver on your's if you designed your own front panel?

I absolutely agree, it is a mature product, working very nicely as is. It is very diy friendly, has great IIR filter capabilities and good software. A better clock (instead of the codec PLL used in Najda) could potentially help the sound. One of its great strength is the analogue volume chip (in my view 114dB DAC chip + volume chip is better than a fancy new DAC chip without analogue volume).

Thanks, this is indeed what I am doing, the IR receiver is behind the plexiglass of the window. My wife and I like to have physical controls though, in case the remote is hidden somewhere. Volume is of course very handy to have, source selection would be nice to have.

Najda has to few source inputs. I'm counting 3 maybe 4 toshlink, 2 analogue for normal HiFi living room set up. I don't think this need to be done on the board but we need a way to ether switch source from inside Najda or be able to switch Najdas source from outside. The rest can be made with small relays and other basic stuff. I guess some people also like to be able to use an Arduino to make a link to other home automation platforms.
I'm writing this to see is there an interest in this or am I to only one. There is probably several ways to do this without the help from Nic. One idea to switch inputs from outside the board would be to generate an IR signal with an IR emulator and feed that into the IR receiver. An other way is to cut the lines to on board switches and feed signals from outside the Najda boar. Any other ideas!?
