Seeing this is an Aussie thread, ...
I have just been contacted by a guy in Brisbane who has just become the Aussie distributor for Jantzen caps coils etc.
I have checked with Jantzen themselves to confirm this, is OK !
He is working on a web site, soon he hopes !!
His prices look ok! Worth contacting if you are in the market

maybe we had better not have this at our place, all you perfectionists would I'm sure look at my cut and shut MDF jobs with total disdain.....hey, at least these are making music!! ha ha.
Nothing seems to be moving forward really on this, I know early days and all that but then again these things often don't work if they only have two days work on the organising side of things.
Maybe we should narrow down to a couple of options, vote on them somehow and then see which one suits the most people.
Looks like something might happen up Brissie way, so maybe the regional aspect will at least get of the ground.
Have been thinking of the sort of things I'D like to see/experience, maybe others would too. Personally I'd like to learn something, so whilst a lecture could very well be the wrong word, is there someone who really knows their stuff on a topic of interest to a lot of us that could give a seminar say?? (hope you understand what I mean, and that I'm only tossing ideas into the ring).
Another topic I would like to get some reality on, the question of 'are those high falutin and expensive audiophile amps' worth the money in a good old comparison to a budget amp. I've never been involved in any sort of critical comparison like that, and would love to be. If it can be answered either way (if only to my own satisfaction) then that would be valuable to me.
Whatever it is, and others could have their own ideas, I see value in it cause I come away knowing more than I started with.

terry j, I concur; one of the reasons for the post in the first place was to try and get more knowledge, and if i post pictures of my stuff promise not to laugh.
Most of my stuff is party gear that only sounds good wheen it's played loud, and boring MDF boxes rule because of cost ( at the moment)
Seriously tho, your place sounds good to me, and I can always borrow a trailer to carry some of my stuff.
This could also be the excuse I need to finally buy a road case rack-mount for my part gear set-up.

hi guys I am originally from Newcastle, but now live in China, and sometimes Malaysia(wifes home) and I diy in both countries, to some degree. I have posted some photos of some of my work on other threads. Rabbitz was a big help for my designs as I do not have any measuring equipment only the ears... so at the end of the day if i like what i hear thats what i go with, but it normally takes at least 6 months to 1 year to finalise my final crossover. I use series crossovers exclusivley now and have a lot of fun doing them. when i am in china I can buy fairly decent cabinets and drivers plus croosover parts but are mainly restricted to bookshelf size as I can only build and dsign these in my hotel room. yes i know i am a nutter...
in malaysia when i am there and have time i build the cabinets from scratch and mainly get crossover pars from OZ as the diy scene in Malaysia is fairly juvenile at ths stage. anyway check out my pics and I must say i would love to be home in Newcastle doin my stuff there but ce la vie
cheers

Looks like you know what you are doing constrution wise, and if you have Peter helping you, and using series x-os, then you can't be going too far wrong ;-)
If you ever do get back to Newy, be sure to line up with Rabbitz for a proper get together
Nice speakers
Jonathon.
Hi! what is the beautiful timber you have used to veneer ( I am assuming it is a veneer ) those boxes with??
Striking grain and colour. have to assume they sound as good as they look.

thanks moondog, to be honest i bought the veneer in malaysia, and i think from another thread someone said it was either ebony or macasar.
anyway they do sound good, they are still in malaysia but i have another similar pair with me in China which uses a slightly different configuration. vifa pl18 as the mid woofer instead of the vifa pj17 on the picture above and the woofer closer to the mid woofer is the same peerless 8 inch and the same xt25 tweeter. its a series crossover but a 2/12way design. i was tweekin the crossover recently and added a 6mh inductor to the woofer instead of a 4.7mh which runs parallel with the series filter on the midwoofer and tweeter. great sound and wide soundstage, but honestly i think the 4.7mh was better but still listening so havent quite made up my mind. anyway i have atached the design i have in China with me.cheers

I have never tried a series cross-over, i have always been of the opinion they were for experts, very easy to get wrong.
As posted earlier I must get Ainto G and finish at least one of my current projects, I have three sitting around in bits, and half started.
I was wondering about your monicker:-[ as an ex-chef myself

DIY audio nuts in Canberra
Hi guys, I am mainly interested in "frugalphile" (TM Dave Dlugos) type projects involving drivers rescued from garage sales, church/school fetes, Revolve or AussieJunk here in canberra.
Recent projects include Jordan VTL/Konus Essence lookalike using Response (Jaycar) midwoofer (6.5" with phaseplug) and old SEAS H087 tweeter in tapered TL box. Also have history of building PA boxes and MOSFET amp. mainly interested in speakers, but collect TT, valve amps, 70s Luxman etc. Next project FR driver (Rola 8MX or Magnavox 8WR) with helper 2x 8" bass and supertweeter (Fostex FT17) XO at 200Hz and 6-8KHz probably--maybe higher. Something like the German Fostex Sprinter--pic attached. may go OB for mid/FR driver.
I live in Canberra and am interested in organising a gettogether to display diy projects, weird and wonderful bits&pieces etc. I will watch this forum to see if anyone replies. Would like to hear from DrewP and anyone lurking in Canberra region.

I have used 8WR's and confirm that they are quite underrated. You might like to try teaming them with a piezo supertweeter. A frugal winner.

Woops, first an apology for double post. Somehow my draft preview got posted. ;-(
Doug, thanks for pic and encouragement for 8WRs. I read somewhere that they are almost identical in performance to ROLA 8MX--can you confirm or deny? I would appreciate details of 8WR boxes that you show in your post. Are they side-vented TLs? The ROLAs and Magnavox's I found are NOS still in original boxes. Also picked up NOS FosteR FT17s at same time. I read that these aussie drivers are ideal for OB or horn use because of stiff suspension and low x-max (High Qts??) and should work OK in TL. I also have single 70s Magnavox cast frame 8"woofer that needs a mate. Do you know anything aout those?
Cheers

Sorry Doug, I'm half asleep. Forgot to ask, what sort of amp are you using to drive the magnavox 8WRs? Have you experimented with different amps, enclosures etc?
Other thoughts...I remember MANY years ago making an aperiodic box for ROLA 6". Wide, shallow box with lots-a-slots (~5-6 mm wide x 300mm long) cut in the back and then inside of back panel covered in thick felt (carpet underlay). I think it was a ROLA recommended design. Approx 24" h x 16" w x 6" deep (600mm x 400mm x 150mm).
Do you have any old ROLA or Magnavox plans. Old copies of Electronics Australia or Radio, Television & Hobbies sometimes have these types of plans.

Ian, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun. I only set mine aside because I obtained a pair of Peak 8CX50's, and I'm now building with them. I did try also a pair of Magnavox 10" twin cones, but to my ear they were lacking top end without enough added bass to warrant swapping. Perhaps they could be mated with your tweeters. Let me know if you'd like to buy them.
cheers,

* Sorry. No experience with the 8MX.

* No. They are, in fact, PAWO zhorns. I chose them as my first DIY cabinets because they were an easy build. I'm not convinced they are at all the best for 8WR's, but they were an easy build and taught me a lot. They are also a "forgiving" design, because - if you screw on the front baffle - you can easily replace it with another for a different driver location or size. The first drivers I put in them were Kenwood (car) twin-cones. Utter failure, sonically.

* Mine were NOS also. Before I set them aside I tried piezo superteeeters (L-padded). Better.
IMHO, the OB or semi-OB should be a winner, because, if you look at where they were used at the time, it was often in console-style lowboy stereogrammes. I have heard of someone in WA who used them in horns, but I don't know the design. Perhaps post an appeal as a separate thread.
I also have single 70s Magnavox cast frame 8"woofer that needs a mate. Do you know anything aout those?

Ian,
1. A Yamaha integrated and a SI T-amp. T-amp was good. I don't think the 8WR's are a fussy load.
2. Sorry,but I don't have any old plans.

Thanks for info Doug. I've looked at Pawo horns, but I don't think I will try horns unless its something like Fostex styles with small drivers. I believe OB midrange with the 8WR or 8MX from ~200 to upper rolloff is way to go, then Foster(x) tweeter with single cap & L-pad. This only needs realistic baffle widths 300-400mm. Sealed, BR or aperiodic 40litre cabinets for twin SEAS woofers (down to 35Hz according to spec sheets) will fit nicely behind a flat or curved baffle and provide support. I have active XO adjustable from 80-180Hz for bass/mid split and will likely bi-amp. 100W/channel SS amp for bass, Luxman L230 classA 15W/channel or valve amp for mids up. I have NO hope of smuggling basszilla type box into house altho that would solve bass problem. ;-D Finally found small jpeg of Acapella that I think is good starting point for my design just imagine that with twin woofers.
I see you have also discovered trick of painting MDF box sides mid-grey so they "blend in" to house. Or is that a trick of lighting?
I don't know much about Peak speakers altho I occasionally see flimsy 70s vintage plastic or ply boxes containing small Peak drivers. I will look out for them now you have mentioned them.
Cheers

Having trouble uploading pictures. Try this site for Acapella that appeals to me as good compromise in size vs performance in bass.

I live on the Gold Coast and would love the opportunity to meet up with DIY minded audio people. I have very limited experience (never constructed my own but have helped construct some) with making speakers but am really eager to learn and build my own pair... trying to get my head around the speaker cook book...
Please dont forget about me, haha (i cant email yet because i need to make some more posts before im able to access emails...) I commute up to QUT for university so anywhere in Brisbane wont be a problem, and im sure it will be worth it for the experience!
