DIY speakers in Australia

ha ha ha

we're famous!!

out of curiosity I just looked up New Haven Park, the guest house 200m away I was referring to earlier.

Anyways, on one of the shots of the place, yes indeedy, they took one out the back door I presume (of course just to show everybody the salubrious surroundings) and THERE WE ARE!!!

That is our place featured across the paddocks in the shot. Not extremely clear, but good enough from (well, to be honest it's probably 500 m away😉 ).

It's quite a recent shot I see, you can just make out our 300m driveway, which was done by us only in the last year or two.

The above shows the unusual suspension design. The fingers are etched rather than stamped.

It's a very smooth sounding driver. Used by Meyersound until they started making their own. I was lucky to find these on eBay. I've had Altec 288s of many different varieties and I prefer these.
Thanks. Looks like a great driver based on reputation.

Though I've been messing with some large high efficiency direct radiators, an Azura based system was my original idea, which if the costs for the other project keep escalating, may be revisited.

Myself, I'm in sunny Canberra. I seem to recall Andy Graddon lugging a couple of Vifa TQWT's over to my place many moons ago and overdriving my loungeroom.

Sadly (or wonderfully depending on how you look at it) my DIY efforts have been drastically curtailed lately by the arrival in October 05 of a young lady who decided that 28 weeks gestation was a great time to show up. She's doing fine but somehow the DIY hasn't recovered yet.

At work I have a Garrard 401 in a corian and brushbox plinth with a Decca International arm, the garage is playing host to a push pull triode el84 amp that has been in bits for at least 2 years now and the spare room has my pair of Fostex FE168 Sigmas on open baffles.

Step one: Finish the Garrard and get the vinyl spinning again.
Step two: BiB the Fostex's
Step three: Get the EL84 amp done, even with cheap bits.

MUST DO MORE DIY and clear the backlog!

Hey guys, i think this is my first post but ive been a member for a while. Just been trying to absorb the huge amount of info on this site!

I live on the Gold Coast and would love the opportunity to meet up with DIY minded audio people. I have very limited experience (never constructed my own but have helped construct some) with making speakers but am really eager to learn and build my own pair... trying to get my head around the speaker cook book...

Please dont forget about me, haha (i cant email yet because i need to make some more posts before im able to access emails...) I commute up to QUT for university so anywhere in Brisbane wont be a problem, and im sure it will be worth it for the experience!

DrewP congratulations on the youngsters arrival, I remember those times well ! and you won't have much spare time for a while.
I must get my own A** off the chair and do more stuff myself, I'm a bad boy, just bought a pair of B-139's ( model SP1044's ) i just could not help myself, aaannd now I need a design for these, small sealed box and a decent low crossed mid-range, thinking about the Vifa P13 for this one spl's are similar and I still have a pair of the neo tweeter, opinions on the combination welcome.
This will make 4 projects started and none finished.
terry j, I love the look of your back-yard

Hi DrewP, gees we didn't have them up that loud 😉
Great to here you are still around the audio scene !!

And, Ted,
Somewhere I have the actual design for the original Rogers TL using the B139, if you are interested..... and I can find it. 🙄
The B139 is an awesome bass driver, but don't expect anything decent in the way of mids from it. The P13 should be a great match. I used the C13.
I really must get around to finishing those "Manhattan" speakers one day !! :cannotbe:

Thanx Andy, I had seen the 'Manhatten" I wasn't sure about my ability to make the T/L, the IMF using the B139 plus the B200 ( I just tried the IMF website and it looks to be down permanently ) was my dream speaker way back in the 70's.
GeeVee has also posted plans that look like a clone of that design, what do people think? should i try small T/L?
My last T/L was a 600litre monster planned with an 18 inch in mind but wound up with dual 12's instead, too big and too heavy and in the end I could not get it into the house:_ { I wound up burning it.
Andy I have a pair of Fosters left if I decide to do it, but is your reccomended tweeter ( the Vifa D26NC) suitable for this project?
Terry j , don't you run sheep to keep the grass down and provide meat for the spit??

I redesigned the TL section, Its really a pretty basic rectangular cab with a shaped partition. I could see if I still have the sketch somewhere if you like, not sure if I have it still or not.

You will need a good mid, as said, but certainly the D26 would be great for the top end , you would not need the ribbon top end like I did with the old Kef t15 tweeters.

Yeah, at the moment I'm afraid DIY audio is competing with XC bike riding as well. It's very sad, I've been on the bike a whole 15 hours since Christmas!

I think one of my biggest problems is that I'm a bit of a perfectionist. A couple of hundred dollars could see the amplifier and speaker projects completed if I was willing to build in MDF and stock Jaycar bits. The problem is that I tend to not even start until I can get Tassie oak or better for the speakers and all those cushy caps, sockets and resistors.

Instead of something brilliant in 10 years time I'd be far better off with something good in 6 months time.

Silly really.
Still, you see so much about regular this or that sounding "bad" that if I put something together using all that standard stuff it'd just play on my mind the whole time. (notwithstanding the fact that almost all consumer gear till you get above 5k uses stock carbon resistors and electrolytics for 95% of the circuit)

I'll get there, it's just going to take a while...

perfectionism

Hi DrewP; I think I have similar problem, I imagine a system, do the math, design the box and X-over, buy some of the drivers; and then start thinking " what if I" and as i said in an earlier post i now have 3 uncompleted projects running.
Actually standing still or going backwards:- and it's not as if I will hear the difference i am going deaf rapidly due to industrial incidents in my late twenties.
i need to finish my current project tho, Icrossed the tweeter over too low in the small box I modified at the start of the year and it is degrading with out grace.
Ted

The irritating thing is that I know that the FE168 Sigmas are a brilliant driver and deserve better than an MDF box. It's just making the woodwork and the few hundred dollars a priority in the scheme of everything else. There's always a toy to buy for Kate or a new bike tyre or chain and at the end of the fortnight my "discretionary money" is gone.

As far as the rest of it goes, I've heard the amps that Pat Turner builds here in the ACT so I know that although Beyschlags and Auricaps can improve things a bit, the bog standard carbon comps and Wima's will get you most of the way there. More about good design than the latest ubercomponents.

Frustrating when it's all so close. A few weekends and I could put most of these projects to bed (plus reduce the crap lying under my desk at work and on the garage bench by 60%). I have every evening after my wife and daughter are in bed free to do whatever I want, so what the hell is my problem? (aside from fatigue)

so what the hell is my problem? (aside from fatigue)
And why can't that alone be your answer??
Fatigue and stress; strikes us all in different ways and we deal with it in different ways, but assuming we all keep a level of health that allows us to do our work and still enjoy our kids perhaps nothing else really matters!
I think we also share workbenches, your comments made me think of my own garage.
Regarding your comments on MDF, high quality electronics and
" uber" components, law of diminishing returns, it's the same problem i face when contemplating a new sleeping bag or mountain tent:- saving that last 50 grams doubles the cost of the item.
Built it; and then if you listen and 'KNOW' that you've made a mistake rebuild it better, but i'm willing to bet that only yourself can hear the difference ( I think sometimes it is all in our own mind)
