I mean like this. I'll upload it to the homepage shortly.

Oh, I see 🙂 huh well on the pcb the C1L and C2L are the same dimensions and the physical caps oddly are the same size too. I'm just using plain old Wima FKP2 caps... hopefully they are good enough... I printed out a physical sized board and matched all the parts I have to the board to make shure everything fits, the only parts I do not have are the Blackgate's which should show up soonish. I will upload a zip of my pcb and schematic (eagle) later on just in case anyone wants to tinker with it, outta time this morning 😀

With all informations confirmed, I just finished and had a quick listen to the VSPS. Vima FKP3 for the RIAA. 4,7uF mkt for output caps (because I had some of those). OPA2132 opamp. Well, it played music right away, and sounds pretty good too 😎
Thanks rjm🙂

Steen.

Also I would like to add a PCB I layed out and see what people have to say about it. 🙂

Naz, what about making the layout for single opamps and go dual mono as rjm suggested? You would then be able to use the OPA637😉 Also, if the railcaps were moved closer to the chip, the circuit might perform better! Just a thought.

Steen🙂

If you are using a single supply for the phono stage and preamp, and that power supply has a single rail of V volts, you can't connect the output of the phono stage, referenced to 1/2 V, to the input of the preamp if, as is most likely, the preamp's ground is referenced to the power supply ground.

c1 & c2 reversed

Sorry if this question is dumb I'm very new at this.
I built the VSPS REV.2 and when I tried it out it didn't seem to have enough gain. As I read over the old posts I saw that I had C1 and C2 reversed. What would this sound like? Could this be my trouble?

Tony

The smaller capacitor is in series with the smallest value resistor, the one that introduces the Allen Wright time constant.

Get it backwards and the midband gain drops by about 6dB, while the frequency response looks something like this:

Hello all, first post.

Ive got a few questions with this phono. I am novice so these maybe dum questions;

Im going to have a go at this which looks simple enough. However, if I built a phono using single op-amps is it a case of just relicating the circuit for each channel? What single op-amp would you recommend?? Any help would be most grateful.

A possible layout for single op-amps might be like the suggestion below. Here, the op-amp is on the underside of the board.

I used to have this on the VSPS page, but removed it since it was confusing people. (What? Two layouts? Huh? Which one should I pick? U..g...) 🙄

The OP27 is a safe bet to try first. AD797 if you feel adventurous, OP627 is you feel rich. AD825 if you feel inclined to mess about with SMT. LM6171 if you want to watch TV. (just kidding!) NE5534 if you want to go back to basics.

Use a socket and play around with different ones.

mono VSPS PCB group buy

Along the lines of the Phonoclone Beta Project I have put together a little PCB for the VSPS. Cuz, well, not everyone has a moving coil cartridge, okay?

It's 5x8cm, and since I can get it sent with the next Phonoclone batch order from Olimex, I can have it made up in limited numbers and still send it out for a decent price.

The cost will be $18 for two boards, which includes shipping. I know I originally said $15, but shipping is a bigger part of the total than I allowed for on my first estimate... email/pm for details.

PCB attributes:

- small size 8x5cm (I know I said that already!)
-15mm resistor lead spacing, fits just about anything
- 5, 7.5 mm RIAA cap spacing, for WIMA MKS, MKP, FKP etc, plus 15 and 20mm spacing for larger capacitors.
- output coupling cap accepts 5mm or 22.5mm components, either Black Gate or WIMA MKP or other film types.
- 3.3mm mounting holes.
- board is single sided, with solder mask and top silk screen printing.
- accepts any single op-amp you care to use, including the AD797 as I've allowed room the optional decompensation cap on pin 8, and ceramic bypass capacitors should they be needed.

Below is a picture of the pre-production silk screen, showing component layout. I've still got some tidying up to do, but you hopefully get the gist.
