is there a way to control the cd-rom playing mode (start/stop/next/prev) without using the ide interface controller? what about a "dummy" portable cd player? how are its commands implemented? it's all about the built-in controller.. isn't it applicable to all cd drives (including cd-roms)?
i need at least a "play" button because my cd-rom drive has only the "eject" button. any help please?

Some CDROM chipsets/firmware support a play button.
I suppose if the traces were on the board for such a button
you might be in some luck...
I don't see how trying to graft another cd player onto a cdrom
would be easier than building one of the ide projects?

Why not get a cd rom with the play stop and ff Button ?
Well, i just have two teac cdroms which only have the eject button..

Is there any other method?! Do you have any cdrom drive schematics? The autoplay function are built inside the controller or it could be triggered from outside? I just need the "play" function for implementing the "repeat" mode..
Thanx everybuddy for the answers!

I apologize for the question, but was there ever a complete solution designed to use the PC based CD-Rom as a transport?
Also anyone know of an available kit?

Possible solution to Red_Alert's problem
To Red_Alert:
I recently acquired a 24x Pioneer slot-in CD-ROM drive which only seemed to have an eject buttion. My intuiton told me that this couldn't be the whole story so I removed front cover and...TADAA! 😱 ...a second button was reveiled! Should you definitely look for one, too.

It's so great & congratulations. It's so good outlook.

Thanks MCLL! And I must tell that it works great - you've don a great job. The used CD-Rom is an Teac 40x. I've tried with others also (BTC 52x, LiTeon 48x, Samsung 52x) but the Teac is the winner.
Cheers

Ok, so I emailed Rockna-line to see if the kits with displays are still available...
Any other place to purchase a kit with display?
