DIY CD drive based on a computer CDROM

Hi davesaudio!

thanks for the links!
this seems interesting, but the thread a litle chaotic.. trying to make out anything usable is hard with over 50 pages og posts, some of wich are pretty long. and then there's the phone ill as i said 😉
everything is expencive here in norway. 🙁

Hi jleaman.

Computer CD-Rom's with non-computer power supply can be better or worse (in most cases) then normal cd players.

Try to find CD-ROM LRCK/BCK/DATA lines (CD-DSP chip datasheet) and connect it with TDA1543/TDA1543A. Look here.

If you need display and more then forward and play, you must build some atapi controller board from this thread.

I have a few cd players and out of all of them the cd rom based one is best : O ) Im thinking about building a better powersupply maybe a 12V battery and a 6volt one with a 5V regulator.. Im going to look for a slot loading cdrom i want one i think it would be a great cd player for me : O )

As for the lcd ill have to research and get the lcd to work with the ide interface for a display its not a big deal just a challange for me..

Recommend CDROM

I have test some CDROM but most of them spinnig sound is too loud for me evenif I sit about 3 metre from CDROM I still heard small spinning sound from CDROM.
Right now I buy new one ASUS DVDROM E616P2 (25 USD)because I found software to update firmware to reduce spinnig speed for quietmode. But original one with quietrack tech of this CD even if I 'm not yet upgrade firmware, the spinning sound is very quiet, even if sit down 1 metre from CDROM can hear very low spinning noise with attention. And for 3 metre from CDROM I cannot heard spinning sound any more. I hope some one can test another CDROM of asus 520/A4 and 520/A5 with about 15 USD with same QUIETRACK Tech. Hope you will satisfied like me.

But ASUS DVDROM E616P2 that I use didn't have play button, you need to have control board. And all of them have digital out pin to use with DAC.

Hi

Mine is a ASUS CD-S520 (ASUS 52X CD-ROM) "Quietrack".

It is very quiet (no noise at 1 meter or even less)

It has a play and skip button, but I have the Rockna-line controller card wich makes a great job with it. There is a Spdif output.

I replaced the 33.8MHz ceramic oscillator in it, and I send the clock from my Dac (I have a 33.8MHz Tentlab clock in it).

The DAc is composed of :
PSU : +5 digital, +/-5 analog, +5 clock, +5 glue logic (74act74, 74act04)

1 cs8414 (with the filter cell = 3.3nf // with 470ohms-220nf).

A reclock stage : it reclocks the latch signal for the ad1865 with a guido tent low jitter oscillator.

2 ad8565 : it means 2 dacs/chanel : one for data, one for data inverted. Then balanced output for each chanel.

It works since yesterday in the evening (just on resistors at the I output of the dacs).

I have to build the balanced U/I. I plan to build the Nelson DI U/I stage.

I prepare shematics for all of you 😉
