Devore Orangutan Clone?

Used basic O96 Ref idea, just in a different way (call it: done right)...
  • 8'' SEAS EXOTIC X2-08 AlNiCo (not the average ones ..)
  • Seas T35 X3-06 Alnico Hochtöner (way different league than Moral ..)
  • 35mm calotte from Dr. K. Müller Engeneering
  • High quality crossover
  • Active Sub: 12'' SB Accoustic SB34NRXL75-8 with Hypex FA251 (high gain used to 2way binding posts)
  • Build? By a DIY friend..

..very good, extra subs not needed they SEAS go quite low (30 - 3000Hz)! Of course the overall soundstage gets better with additional subs (i'm not somone bass-oriented) and makes the speaker in my opionion more 'complete'. Some have recommended to use hypex fa501, but for me fa251 enough.

Well I have been thinking about this some more and suspect the Scanspeak Elipticor 8542TOO 8 inch woofer [or the 4 ohm version] might be a fantastic choice for this sort of speaker. They are not cheap but but neither are they crazy expensive and if you can combine them with an affordable tweeter like the Morel would not cost too much to make. They have that rare combination of quite good extension and good efficiency [91 db for the 8 ohm and 93.5 for the 4 ohm.
Perhaps somebody would like to model them?

Seeing the price of that 50 watt 8"
Might as well build a 3 way
using cheaper drivers for same performance.

For a 2way with 8"
you can buy RS225 Dayton
Make one for yourself, your neighbor
best friend and likely you boss too.
And sound the same if not better.

91 dB not hard to beat with the Dayton PS220-8
96 dB

Ellipticor has junk rising response
for the price. Lowend nothing special
Not interested in paying for their engineering time
which is not comparable to even lower price point woofers.

Cant see the phase response in the datasheet.
Can already tell it would be a pain to crossover
at around 1400 Hz

More than willing to do a free sim.
Would actually have off axis info.
And no magical garbage 30 ohm peak

Still haven't seen off axis for 096
be nice to see how deep the crossover dip is
at lets guess 45 degrees?

How do they compare to your sonido la grande?
Sorry, long time visiting the forum ;-)
DAY & NIGHT 😉...
We are talking about Full-Range Single-Driver versus 2way + active-Sub speakers.
  • Le Grande with the wonderful Sonido SFR-175A are really, really fantastic for vocals/jazz/classic. Great dimensionality, sound stage
  • RobF96/DeVore: better than any AN HE Spe or O96 I've heard and together with the 2 active subs very nice sound stage, even with lower volumes. High dynamic, heights not too bright, very harmonic overall and my preferred setup for long-time listening sessions. Of course not a typtical "neutral" speaker and having his typical sound signature like AN or DeVore, based on cabinet foundation

What are the length and diameter of the two rear ports?
I've not built it by myself, attached some pictures. Ports are generic ones 6cm (tube inside diameter) and length would~20-25cm.

Hi Dualuxe,

I know it's been a couple of years, but I'm wondering if you are still around and using these speakers.

Looking at your box alignment: You have two 3" X 7.5" ports, which UniBox calculates to be around a 40hz tuning giving a fairly broad 4db bump centered around 55hz. This does look similar to what was measured in the Stereophile review.
Did you tune this by ear? Or were you guesstimating based on the O/96 measurements?

I can see how this bump could provide some BSC-like FR shaping without sacrificing sensitivity.

Do you still use this speaker?
Have you done anything else you might share?

Regards,
John
Yes, tuned by ear. I just made a bunch of ports of different lengths from about 5" to 8" and tested them.
