I did search before posting. Not a single link in the search results explains how to check a true "silver wire mid-70 voskhod" tube. The only description I found is a single wire getter. It will qualify tons of tubes. I cannot trust stamps on the tubes, especially since they all look like new on ebay. The stamps on most Russian tubes that I have are barely readable. If you know how to check a true "silver wire mid-70 voskhod" tube, I would greatly appreciate it.
I was searching for a good 6DJ8/6N23P and I came across listings like this from reputable sellers.

Take what I am saying with a grain of salt since I am not an expert. This image above shows a retail box really used in USSR. However, as far as I remember 'EV' was designated for military grade in USSR and military grade components have never been sold through retail network.

The image below shows how military grade tubes were packaged in USSR.

@Seavan it is indeed a mine field, any that are in circulation would have been grabbed from soviet stocks somewhere. The Ukranian vendors are holding all the goodies. As you can imagine, the war has crushed any further opportunities.
I'm very lucky that Michelag took a liking to me and sent me a good tube, silver plate and all. I think he was lucky in timing to grab a couple before all the mess started.
The price alone will tell you if it is genuine but that is only if the vendor is honest, there are a few Ukrainian vendors that have been around years, and their reputation has been built accordingly.
You want one, book a flight and a flak vest, go and rummage through the ruins 😉 or pay the big bucks.

The grey plates are the next best thing, look for those. I found a nice Mullard CV4003 mil spec that I will try. Brimar, RCA, Siemens are all worth a shot.

List of tubes rated on a forum, rated in order, everything in this list has likely doubled in price since this was posted. 1974 - 1975 were good years for some reason, the factory had a good team building them, things were better in USSR, less ques for bread... Siemens were producing good stuff in the '60s

Check the price of Siemens CCA grey's '63. 😳

@miro1360 Hi pal, recently I mentioned I was buying a couple of AD1862N-J from Ali Express, and you suggested to show the items here to help others have a look.

Well, they arrived today and they are good to go. The pic below shows the two new parts at the top marked 0008 and the old ones below marked 0051. Brand new and fresh. Good price, I may grab a couple more for emergencies. Good vendor, quick shipping.

Also I am trying a little hack with the AD1862 board - the data sheet shows that both VS and VL rails can be run at +/- 12V, you had the digital rails at 5V in order to share power to the shift registers through J9 link. This slightly annoyed me as having both 5V and 12V supplies is pain, I need to figure the most compact solution possible ideally.

So - I removed J9 link and fired 3.3V from the XMOS module into J9 to power the logic chips. And it works fine so far. Now only one +/-12V supply for the DACs is needed. 'Bob's your uncle' as they say in North Wales... 😉

This is obviously just for the original I2S shift register layout, the JLSounds XMOS gerbers you did for me will be here next week so I might be back to 5 and 12 V supplies again.

Thanks again for everything 🙂

Guys what is 'the best' or atleast ones worth considering.....USB to I2S board that I may find on AliExpress.

Should I be looking for one with 3 clocks, I see some only have 2. And also I see one with swappable 4 Lin clocks for the audio, so I could put some much better ones in there...?!

I (think) I've made the decision to step away from my Rpi setup as it seems so flaky. I've just got one of those Wiim Ultra streamers and I intend to use it's USB output to feed my DIY dac.

Is the JLsounds such a bit step up from the Chinese Amenero or XMOS or Combo387 boards?

Thanks

Several things it has going on for it. Fully isolated, very versatile, very easy to supply with linear psu, great support from lyuben. But it is expensive. There is a very nice project here as well from @eclipsevl which you will have the best support from, and it is constantly improved upon, and being very affordable. If you require amanero footprint/like board, xing u30 is definitely the biggest bang for buck. Very well thought out solution, worth every penny compared to regular amanero clones.

I have the Xing U30 too, and i agree with Brijac. I would even risk getting some flaming by saying it sounds better than my Amanero Combo384 ( the official one, not Aliexpress). The board has NDK SDA crystals, i wrote to the designer and he confirmed that. It does not sound as good as JLSounds to me, but at that kind of price, I am really not complaining.

Amanero clone sounds a little softer than JLS, sometimes that has its advantages. JLS powered from a USB port and Amanero powered from a USB port, it's so similar that it's not really worth the JLS. Only when JLS is fed properly with two PS, then it is heard.

I will wait for the release of this version:

Usb isolation, reclock, better clock quality made big difference to me.
I am going to build Markw4's clock board for I2SoverUSB,I am excited 😆
There is reclocker board option with 22/24 clock,pcm2dsd(not for ad1862 though).
