DAC AD1862: Almost THT, I2S input, NOS, R-2R

Yeah,, special command, ask japan when you are sure of your end of life DAC 🙂

Having not the monney my main DAC is using 4 R-core of a good quality though (were made in India and are good, too bad I can not source them anymore in France) traffo with 4 secondaries each (it is not an ad1862 DAC, here you can live with two R-Core as you stated)

There is a paper of Thorsten Loesch for that in the blog of miro1360 I would read first. Simplier schemes without pushpull hybrid circuitries could be enough despite the low 1 mA offset output, though I would keep the idea for TDA1541A only for some reasons (but quality of the tube matters and they became hard to source -chineese boards have terrible tubes imho, whatever the dac ic you choose! If spending monney I would rather go for EUVL half free boards or "perhaps" (I have not tested but said to be good) Vunce boards about opa861 or ad811 to avoid the hassle of matched parts by virgins at every two Equinox waiting list filling form queue at Stonehendge! (though I will go there if Jimy Hendrix plays guitar on the top of a stonehendge pillar during the wainting queue !)

Maybe one could does a board with discrete bjt Ssergliss member, borhok26 member tried and said to be around -120 db noise ?! iirc ?! Now some say a fet input is better to figth the glitches of dac ic outputs.... Well, who knows, glad we have NOT to make a module to walk on Moon ... 🤣

Little by little but well keeped things everyone have not access cause solded for good reasons or keeped secret,, there is a short list of things that works good while it has to be "took with salt" :

- opa 861 : Pedja Rogic legacy of a list of op amps (ad8444 then opa660) with very low impedance input which is an important thing for transimpedance audio stage of dac curent output ic. Are discrete equivalent as good enough is a task still to be investigated.
  • EUVL stuffs, revision efforts of N. Pass Papa labour and not only but with harder sorting out active parts perhaps to targett the goal of low noise- according to the scheme chosen- fet input choice.
  • Good enough OP amps as (not necessaarily in that order) : opa1655/56 ; LM6171 ; AD828 ; ADA48998-1, opa861, ad811 ... in the yet avialablle ones.
- tubes : difficult cause noiser, but who as said noise is the frst item onn the list for good sound ? Coloration is imho a part of audio reproduction.

My limited (long experience though) is things are not simple : each thing matters to set up the choice according each one own hifi setup and personal tastes.

Whatever positivists say, passive parts matter and are hard to rule (understanding it is hard with measures to always abstract a rule that always work but the stupid only rule of noise floor. Active parts of course and the main : shematic topology, board layout, and here see all the things from the power transformer to the ICs. Of course layout and what is going out of your wall plugs.

At the end if one is wanting for quality controled cost,, DIY could be more expensive going further in all those details.

Just Be carefulll of the TCO, there are also very good DAC (if not better at the end) around a Grand ! If your main goal iss listening to music ! (but where is the intelectual Onan pleasure then ?! (ahaha)

Good Iggy, this post is a sticky :clown:... when words matter much than uninterupting publications, héhé !

Thanks. I would live to do tube stage myself but it seems like it is overly dangerous😀

why then? we got boards ready (i can ship a psu and an audio board, even the right tube!), i linked a BOM, you just need a transformer and to populate the board...

It is not easy to find r core transformer with two 6 or 7 ac secondaries
look, this is my go-to transformer shop, it makes also custom r-core with your specs:

Miro, after years of happy listening to your wonderfull DAC I made it to blow it and now need 2...3 fresh boards. How do I best get such boards. Would prefer basically the same old boards you started with but sure am open to try new versions if you have a recommendation. Whom would I need to contact??
Thanks for help.
