DAC AD1862: Almost THT, I2S input, NOS, R-2R

Hi Miro, one of the DAC chips was from Ebay, which I have bought early und the second one was from Paddy.
Will check your proposals. Strange for me was, that both DAC chips did not die while I was listening, but during a longer lasting break. And they did not die at the same time. I think, both DACs were sitting on the left channel side.
Btw, does anyone in Europe have a spare part for me?
Cheers, Ernst

I’m getting ready to build miro’s PCM63 DAC and plan to use it with the I2SoverUSB vIII without shift registers and ZMod’s D1 I/V.

I want to make sure that I have this correct. Looking at the schematic it looks like I will not need to install:
IC1 thru IC6
C1 thru C6
C27 thru C36
J10 thru J13
R8 thru R11

@ernesternest Did you swap chips between to check, if the problem is really in DAC chip? 🙂
Check with a multimeter the voltage on the non-functioning chip or in socket (with the device turned on) if the problem is not somewhere else.
Miro, I did swap the chips and the failure followed. So it is the dac chip. As this happened a second time, I will investigate more deeply if I can find a difference between the 2 PSU branches. And I will add some caps, as you mentioned. Still I'm looking for a single dac chip, if anybody from Europe is willing to sell one to me. Best regards, Ernst

@codyt On all bits (full volume) it is good, but definitely not better than AD1862, AD1865 or PCM1702 (as well as PCM63 or TDA1541A) ... all these are much better sounding 😊
On the lower volume the imperfection of resistor tolerance is audible.
It needs much more improvements, like adding separated switches and powering the switches from negative voltage (this could remove subtle digital background noise).
... I think discrete ladder DAC is not very good way how to spend money and time :2c: it can be much more interesting (and significantly better) to create DAC from true resistor chips like the DAC8565 or DAC8574 which are resistor string DACs, or DAC8820 (almost R-2R) or DAC8812 which is true R-2R ladder with current output 😎 (still available from mouser).
... or even more crazy, DAC702BH (old fashion 🤣, hardly available)
If time will be favorable, all these can be projects that will be added to this thread, but it will take a long time 🤓
