cyrus 2 phono
Hi, thanks for that,
my master plan was to match it to a charlise chip amp, and run the lot off a 12 SLA battery, so thats why i am trying to get the input and power to it.
regards
Johnny

Hi Andrew,
It is not possible to upgrade a Cyrus II past that level. The Cyrus III is completely different in construction and circuit.
Hi Johnny555,
Sorry, I can't release the schematic either unless Cyrus directs me to do that.
Why do you think the transformer is blown? My feeling is that the three terminal regulators overheated. Add some SM caps (about 1 uF, 63V should do it) to the places where you can see unfilled component locations. Any electrolytic will overheat there. I've tried already.
You have a good amp there, please don't hack it. It's worth more broken than it is hacked.

Re: cyrus amp- slightly left of center question
The 3 onwards use similar (identical?) cases and I'm sure Cyrus would like the work.
it's a 3 Johnny is asking about. That's why he excused himself for butting in!johnny555 said:Hi all, Hope i am not going off track here, but you seem knowlagable dudes.
I have a cyrus 3, blown up (PSU/transformer i think)
However i want to usu the phono stage (as i think its rather good) and one can direct me to a circuit diagram of said item as i cant find one any on the net😕
Thanks, sorry for the slight "hi jack" of the thread--but i am desprate!

Hi Andrew,
Cyrus is offering a "refresh" program where they will look after age related things also.

Thank you. I did reply to the Cyrus III issue. I hope it helps him.it's a 3 Johnny is asking about.

Dear Andrew and Anatach,
Thanks for the replys, what happend is the fuses started to blow on the amp, the rtansformer can be seen to arc ( small blue spark in a darkend room) i put 35v ac where the transformer left off and still got no joy- tested diodes ok, regulators (not sure but seemed ok on cold checks), its would cost more to fix than to purchase a less older one on ebay( as mine is 10 years old-)!thats why i wanted to utlise the phono amp as i am going DC all the way (amp+cd player) --but yes it is a very nice amp to "hack" i do agree, i like it very much-- but i could replace it for less than it costs to fix, and i aint rich!-- what to do ????
Ta lads

Hi,
Send an email to Cyrus and found out how much they want to fix it. The price of a second hand Cyrus 3 has risen a fair bit in the past 12 months. Aren't they £100 or more now? Some go for a lot more. It just might be better to fix it.
Cyrus might even replace all the big caps at the same time. That would be a big bonus.
Regards,
Martin

Hi anatech
You've mentioned a "refresh" program a couple times offered by Cyrus. I have a Cyrus II with PSX that I've owned since 1990. It still works great but I've have been into the amp a couple times for minor repairs, the worse thing being a leaky filter cap in the phono power supply. I don't suppose you are at liberty to divulge what services this "refresh" program entails.

Hi tkwou,
There are other things I look at and replace if required on my own. There is no magic involved, but people who I've done these for have been very positive once they get them back. It's simply a refresh because the unit is old. I always look at the unit and then estimate it first.
So, just standard, good servicing is what this is. When I first heard of this from England (from a customer) I asked what they were doing. It turned out that there was nothing new at all. People just respond better when you give a name to "what ever " it is that you are doing.
Some techs are better than others and the job depends entirely on the tech.

Sure, it's a rebuild that I normally would do anyway. You could also replace the main filter caps if you wished. I normally don't unless I can see a problem (I check with a 'scope).I don't suppose you are at liberty to divulge what services this "refresh" program entails.

I don't want to hijack this thread but while I have your attention, I have started another thread regarding the Mission 776 preamp. Is this a piece you are familar with? Mine is working fine but I'm looking at possible ways to improve it.

Hi Jmateus.
How do you describe the comparison between Studio, Symasym and Cyrus one amplifier?
Thank

The Darlington idea would work.
The complementary idea is sound but the PCB would need modification that could cause problems with tracks lifting and fitting links etc in.

First read the schematic! 😉
There is a note on the schematic that I attached to Post #17 which states that if you run out of adjustment on the preset reduce the value of R83.
I have mentioned previously, either in this thread or another one regarding the Cyrus, that the measured quiescent current of one of my Cyrus 1s was about 75mA. I cannot confirm that this is the correct value as I have not seen any service information for this amp.
The service manual says 22mA
