Re: drill press

peter u owned one of these whats a good rpm for aluminum?

The same as for any other application. You determine the RPM by this formula:

Cutting speed factor of the respective tool for the respective material (meters per minute), divided by the cutting tool diameter (in millimeters), multiplied by 318.31 (thats a constant of 1000 divided by PI).

In your case the math would look like this for a regular HSS drill:

60/diameter of drill in millimeters*318.31

Aluminum is soft metal. As you see they recommend 3 top speeds (depending on drill size) for aluminum. However, with this type of drill press, I never felt comfortable to use 1450 RPM when drilling 1/2" holes. I always used the lowest speed for anything between 3/8 and 1/2". As you go with smaller drill bits sizes, you can increase the speed to whatever feels "right" for you. The two highest speeds are good for anything less than 1/4" in dia. At least that's what worked for me.

Do not buy this for cutting precision circle!

I bought this one for my last speaker project it's useless.. Too much play and the cut it produced is not 90 degree.. difficult to get right diameter. And I went thru around 7 cutting bits to finish 2 circles. This is only good for light duty.

Buy a proper router and save money and frustration.

always ware eye protector when drilling.

I never found it a neccessity, although extra safety won't hurt.

You should wear glasses when using punch though. I knew a guy who lost an eye when punch hit him at Bombardier Center in WV. Since that accident thay made it mandatory to use safety glasses when working on aeroplanes, before that happened, it was optional.

Jasper jig

Chris:

I know this was a couple of days back, but are you still looking for a jasper jig?

I made myself an adjustable jig out of some pieces of scrap.
If my camera battery wasn't dead i'd post a picture.

I admit it took about half a day to make, but it's not limited to preset holes like the jasper, any radius between about 4-24 cm can be set (or more if you make it bigger). The precision is kindof okay too, about half a millimeter or less.

If you're interested i'll post some pictures and an instruction tomorrow.

A very important point. The same goes for any manual machining. In Denmark its simply dictated by law, and if Im not mistaken the same goes for the rest of western europe.

The reason for this is partly the chips, but most definitely also because of the fact that cutting tools frequently shatter when broken.

1/2 inch drill bit

After 2 hours of drilling it is time to do filing. The longest and hardest to drill are the 1/2" holes on this 16 guage steel panel. I got scared and did not want to force it that' why it took so long. When I saw the 1/2" drill bit started to bend I eased off and put a drop of engine oil in the hole and continue drilling slowly and also my left hand was holding the shop vac host to vacumn it and I think the sucking of air help cooling the bit too. Oh yes I have set the drill press to the slowest setting.

Now filing will have to be another day I am feeling tire from standing and the noise from the shop vac.:xeye:
