That's simply MAHvelous!
1/5? I thought I read a post you wrote about kickin' a55 at slotcars...
Had to agree on with you on the snake oil there, but will contest one point...
Just because it is expensive, does not make it snake oil. Tried Cobalt Quad magnets? The fastest $200 you can add...

we did drive electric cars a short while this winter, I got bored with it rather soon. Its just not the same as a 1/5th doing 120km/H and 0 to 100 (approx 0 to 69MPH) in less than 4 seconds.

You mastered slotracing in *one* winter?!?
You *are* good!!! I've been at it since '66. and I'm still learning.
As to the specs of your cars...
I built a Suzuki GSX-R that will smoke those... AND, you can actually ride on it!!!
Take a hint, M

Nope..not slotcars...radio controlled.
The 1/10rc cars are pretty boring if youre used to something big and powerfull..
It would be like going from your motorbike to a 3 wheeled bicycle 😉

Moderator, please...
How does this work? I can't find Unhinged in the bin (looked through it twice). and all 4 of his posts look quite innocent.
There is no indication of his sentence... I'm doing something wrong?
What's the scoop?

That's what I thought...
You know, paulb, quicksand looks just like regular ol' dirt...
Til you step on it.
Back to "work". This is as good a pic as my old camera can take of the seam in the base of the Stealth Clone (B1) I started last night.
The 2 pieces were finished to within .002" (in all directions) with the hand tool above.
Plans to anyone interested in trying a bit of precision.

More than I can take in
Sorry if I've been a bit quiet. Thankyou to Ekd for passing on why I was so quiet. Being new, it would appear a moderator had updated my status after my first 5 posts and selected the wrong status disabling my account.
Thanks for all the information. Far far too much for me to keep up but I'm sure it'll all come in useful as I go along.

Glad you are back!
There is nothing about this that you can't learn. And none of your questions will be ignored. If I don't have an answer, I'll find one (and, obviously, I'm not the only one). There is a lot of good info already here, but we need guys like you to keep the focus.
This thread has potential to be very helpful for a long time. And it is fun as heck for me.
I wish there was a similar thread for "Lectrotards" like me. Of *all* my stupid questions, precisely one has been answered (PD described his table saw).
So, where are you on your project? What's your tool budget? Which tools do you already own? How far along do you want to take your skill level?
Let'd build something!! Let's keep Steve up nights...
And, Steve? It's about time you got some party weather, no?
As to the sander, I kept a photo record of it's construction and Photoshopped in the dimensions. The only parts of that tool that require power tools to build are the rails. They must be planed absolutely flat and square on two sides (the faces, and where they mount). And, if you substitute metal channel there, no power tools are needed.
Also, the sliding table is simply a small piece of fiberboard (slides really smoothly on the formica), and if you scrounge up enough for a few tables, you can make all kinds of neat fixtures (compound angles, etc.). I'll be building some, and documenting it all.
If anyone wants the plans, email me. I'll send you some pics that anyone can figure out at a glance.
It's your thread, Unhinged. And it's gassed up, and ready to ride.

Edit: Typos. Again. As usual.

Spikes are made from old drill bits (the shank portion) by chucking them in a cordless drill, and turning them (gently) against a running grinder. Can be done with a file, just keep it moving.
Also shown is aniother style of GC that can be made with an identical parts list and techniques.

Actually, the tool budget's pretty low at the moment. Once I get into something I tend to do it both feet first. Consequently I end up going out buying all the things I'll probably never use without doing prior research. So I'm now the proud owner of a 2nd hand oscilloscope, a dremel tool and a commercial headphone amp! So, all the lovely tools people have been describing will probably have to wait a month (or two considering the ZX7R need a service and summer's coming).
I think I probably got my priorities back to front purchase wise after reading this thread but there we are. Also, I was all set to go out and buy some cheap tat only to read here it's a completely false economy.
Can someone tell me what phenolic strips are? This book's (Tab Electronics Guid to Understanding Electricity and Electronics) talks about getting phenolic strips to mount the capacitors to in the case. I've looked all over and can't find these. I don't even know what they are.
