resonant frequencies
Ill look through some of my old dynamics notes and post up what natural frequency chipco's sink will have, gotta go work now though 🙁 back in about 5hrs 🙁

Hope this is relevant to the thread. I came across this site and with a good number of free classes seems to be a place for useful information.

Re: All I know about this...
Jus thought I'd add to this. This is also the main reason Porsche went to water cooling with the 911 engine. The old air cooled ones were too noisy for new regulations, sounded awesome though 🙂
Im bored and trying to do an excel spreadsheet that will work out the resonant frequency of the prongs if you input their dimensions...Ill attatch when im done

C'mon Steve, it's a great sunny day, you should be out having a pint or two of Butty Bach, not stuck indoors next to a computer! 😉

I would if it was like it was this morning. It's clouded over now
even looks like it might rain.

Here we go. It would be nice if anyone could check the validity of this spreadsheet for me 🙂
Chipco, it seems the lowest frequency your heatsink will resonate at is about 250KHz, inaudible enough I think! hehe, and I doubt most speakers would be capable of making enough of that frequency to make the fins resonate

...but I was going to run the amp directly in front of the subwoofer. Now I need a new plan. Perhaps I'll place it on top of the stick welder or over the florescent light ballasts. So many choices!
hehe, sarcasm aside, I think those formulae might be useful somewhere, especially for things like crossover component heatsinking inside speakers for example? Or maybe it would have allowed you to reduce the size of your prongs so that they resonated at, say 50KHz, to maximize surface area while keeping the resistance to microphony.

It is as relevant as anything I have seen (or done) here, Stuart. If not more...
Keep 'em coming!

This might be of interest to a few of you. It's more expensive than making you own, but they're CNC cut so they would make a really attractive, professional looking, finish.

Hurray... found a picture
I found a picture of what I believe he's describing in the book:

What are the dimensions of the caps you need to mount?
Also, anyone else checked into the link Stuart posted? I'm going to try one of the classes (you get one free) but there are a few that look perfect for this topic (measurement being the most obvious, and possibly the most useful).

Genuflection...
A:
Not gonna do it.
B:
You're not worthy. Trust me.
What the hell. Can't get a single answer here. You think you are gonna scare me off???
Here's the deal...
I've been here before. And there are a bunch of you out there. Tons. Guys who hope that the next generation are so gutless that simply calling yourselves the "Masters" is gonna make us new guys so weak that we'll never dare to challenge you...
It would be funny... if it wasn't so pathetic...
Look. If I was a watchmaker, I'd kick PD's *** right now. Right now!!!!
What is the moving parts list at this point? 3? 4?
When you can pack a couple hundred in a piece the size of a Ritz cracker, we'll talk.
Til then, don't be talkin' that shi+. Especially in public.
If chipco had any balls, he'd tell you. There isn't anything that has been shown here, that couldn't be done in a lunch hour in a decent machine shop...
C'mon, let's do SOMETHING!! You pussies!!!
Let's go for the smallest GC ever. The limit is determined by the heat sink's abilities. Let's take a number (you figure it out. I have 28sq in, at 18v-0-18v as a starting point) but, I'll play to any rules.
Lay 'em down. Let's go!!!
This was supposed to be fun. And this site was supposed to be helpful...
Instead, all we have here is a bunch of folks that have decided that we are all better off following, then actually improving the species...
Truly sad.
And utterly arrogant.
Put me in my place, tough guys. Or shut the FFFF up.
If you are here to further the cause, I'm on your side. I understand that you don't want me there... That's fine!😀
But... I ain't goin'anywhere...
And all the new guys deserve to know that you would rather kill (ignore) innovation than admit that you have reached your limits.
More time is spent talkin' about it, than has been spent advancing the species here... And you wonder why the rest of this forum laughs at us!?!
Pic is of me... by me. The part that matters.,.. the inside.
Laugh-a while-a you can, Monkey Boy!!!

Hello everyone
EKD, has someone rattled your cage or upset you somewhere? Im up for some tiny GC's though! Maybe for some computer active speakers or summat...
Unhinged, that looks exactly what you were after 🙂

Steve, no one is to blame for my putting my frustrations out here... But me.
I'm just trying to figure out what is going on here. I have done everything I can to be of value here (I'm not saying I am.. just that I'm trying), and yet I cannot get my questions answered.
I put a lot of time into reading everything I could even partially understand, before my first post on this forum. I know my questions are a bit moronic to some (I gave myself the name "Lectrotard" for a reason). but are they SO stupid as to deserve being ignored? Even the requests for opinions?
There has to be more to it. A lot more.
I can only guess. But I am beginning to suspect that some folks want their a55e5 kissed first. Or,
This is a competitive sport. Or,
GCs have gone as far as they can, and it's just more fun to talk about it than to try to come up with an improvement. Or
This whole deal is really set up to further someone's financial situation, and the last thing that is going to happen is the furtherance of anyone's knowledge that might unsettle that.
You tell me. *Please*
I really need to know. And I'm really tired of pretending that there isn't an elephant in the room... To wit:
PD's latest amp is a beautiful thing. But, I nearly choked when ( I finally read where) he compared himself to a watchmaker.
And no one said a thing about it.
I have design and fabrication skills way beyond what I've shown here (I once hid an entire wiring harness in the frame of a custom Harley I built from parts), and I wouldn't DARE to compare my work to what is one of the most demanding industrial arts ever.
And I have no doubt that if I did, I would be (deservedly) slapped down in minutes. I realize Peter is valuable to this forum (I have read everything I've seen with his name on it), and understand the following he draws, but he *has* to have felt some trepidation at making a statement like that... Unless it was advertising...
I got into this purely for the fun. It's still fun, but now it has a whole new facet to explore. The possibility that there are still improvements to be made in these things, if you can get past any "Flat Earth" type facts (or pin down the variables) surrounding them.
With, or without help, I am going to find out. For example:
I mounted a transformer on a stick, and partially answered one question for myself. Does a GC need good shielding? I can say only this... My P2P setup will allow me to nestle the trans right up to it (any place, any angle), without effect (quite unlike my class A gear). As to whether a PCB version will test out the same? I don't know. Yet.
We both know that the answers, to every question I have posed, in this thread and elsewhere, are known to some who have read them. Well known. And that they remain unanswered is puzzling... unless I got something right in the above list.
In any case... I'm not going anywhere. I'm hooked now. The last time something caught my interest like this, the sport (slotracing), in my area anyway, was filled with snake oil and seemingly "helpful" advice designed to sidetrack newcomers (not an accusation aimed at anyone here). The result proved to be quite the opposite of what some hoped. They ended up needing my parts to compete.
I have no plans to pour that kind of development money into building amps. They don't need it. Heck, they don't need me...
But, I need a challenge. And this looks like a big one, given my current lack of skills. And now I'm truly motivated to go further than just meeting a few minds, and making some Christmas presents.
I'm in this for the long haul, now.
