Current best 5" midrange driver?

Does that work?
I'm in a similar situation with the "spares" in my stash.
Do they loosen up over time or simply get harder and harder?
Generally I would say no. Tried both 100% glycerin as well as dilutions with alcohol. It just doesn't 'soak' into the rubber. At best I might be lowering Fs by 20 Hz, and wouldn't be surprised if it returns back after a week.
I think the problem might be the inability to heat the rubber sufficiently before soaking. Many online recommendations are to boil the part in water prior to immersion in glycerin. Not exactly a practical process for a driver surround.

Is a 8" can be flat upon 2000 hz at 45° ?? I am not sure due to the physic laws. However maybe it is of a less importance or a goodie in the Mundson Fletcher zone ?

@Pano, i suspect you used a large overlap filter with the treble unit and the Beta ?
Audax mid paper pro range are also...something but narrow hz width 500 2000 hz even if the datasheet says 6000 hz xut off.

Why do you think this is Pano?
I suppose the large drivers sound cleaner to me because they aren't working very hard. As to why more "real" I entirely don't know. Part of that is scale I think. To me small speakers almost always sound small. They don't have the scale of real life, so lose a good part of the illusion. Small can sound good and measure well, but rarely sounds real to me.

The rig with the Beta12LT wasn't mine, it was built by my friend John Busch and he said the 12 to tweeter cross was very complex. 18" woofers, the 12" mid and a dome tweeter on open baffle. Despite the rather primitive looks, the sound was similar to big Magnapans or even ESL57. Quite surprising considering the cost and appearance of that 12" driver.

these are also off topic, but related to Pano post 205. Speaker Projects by Zilla

This 10" Eminence looks interesting as a Midrange (but not a 5" or close to it per op)

Yes, I am running the Lil’ Buddy full range. The driver has a natural rolloff on open baffle although some may prefer adding a circuit to reduce the low frequencies even more. I have not found any issues with leaving them running full range."

Gentlemen,

Please keep in mind that there are many “listening in” to this conversation. I’m trying to understand this and learn from your experience. Please take a second and type out what you mean. What is PE, what is “them” and why not link the website?
PE = Parts Express. Their site shows the Aurum Cactus AC130F1 in stock.

Off topic maybe but I have now disassambled my old SEAS Embla DIY build.
Just wondering how you guys rate the old SEAS 6,5" P17REX as a midrange in a 3-way ( working about 200-2000 Hz )
Mating a waveguided tweeter around 1800 Hz and mounted on a larger baffle that is supporting all the way down to Schroeder freq of my room.
Thinking of an active bass box beneath with 8-12" ( size not decided yet )

...aurum cantus ac-130f1. Another highly recommended mid.
Thanks for the tip for the Aurum Cantus AC-130F1 5-1/4" It looks good to cover all the mids without XO; or even as a "full range"

Did you ever hear the distortion - HD3 @1.8kHz eg a female vocalist sound a bit harsh?

Did anyone push it up past the 5kHz breakup?

Info below posted for prosperity on DIYaudio:

The AC-130F1 is great because of the smooth extended response up to past 8KHz means if will do acoustic LR2 no problem, as long as you put in a notch filter.

I've got the Purifi PTT5.0X04 on hand- it's not a pure midrange but I'll be able to take some measurements this weekend and report back... it's little brother is a phenom out past 60-90 degrees in a 13cm wide box, so I wouldn't be surprised if this one also measures very well...

For $45 the XBL2 motor of the M130X seems to be an alternative , it features a Xmax of 7.8mm one-way!

https://gr-research.com/product/m130x-woofer/

DIYSOUNDGROUP has an even more attractive XBL2 woofer/midrange with 9.1mm excursion capability for $54 or so ....

WHAT more do you want ... do you want more? (Bob Marley)

AND you will be pleased everyday with the smooth looks of a gently curved rubber surround that is not designed by someone like Dr. Strangelove!

It’s not going to win in value for money stakes.

But if you want the best, it’s up there. There are more expensive drivers eg. boutique car-audio, that are not as good, but more expensive.

A lil birdy told me a dedicated Purifi midrange is in the works… size <6.5” and >4”

One can only guess the size.😜
