John Martyn nails Ben Harper's "Excuse Me Mr" on Church With One Bell
Harper's just isn't even in shouting distance. It's that it's bad, just Martyn's singing is out of this world...

Sorry to you Kay Pirinha, but this is about covers better than originals, not the "ultimate" ones and Kim Wilde version is well worth mentioning.
Sorry again, one more to add:
Boney M - No Woman, No Cry
(I hope you wont be pissed about)

That is a quite shocking post!
Especially since Boney M. is an early Milli Vanilli and half of them never actually sang on any of the records. The male voice was done by producer Frank Farian who is also responsible for the aforementioned abomination.
Never thought I'd find myself agreeing with Kay who is quite the traditionalist when it comes to music. So that is at least one thing you achieved Davor.

Charles Darwin, I know everything you wrote about Boney M. But even with half od them singing their version of "No Woman No Cry" is better than original.
I never cared about common taste in music or everything else and its always fun to **** off traditionalists. Thats how some of the greatest music was created.

Yeah, Frank Farian and his bosom buddy Giorgio Moroder ran the Musicland studios in the basement of the Arabella Sheraton hotel, Munich, until about 1985. Several great recordings were done there, but also that high glossy, but banal 'Munich sound' disco BS.
Best regards!

Sure is, like The Residents or Einstürzende Neubauten but Farian produced nothing except chart fodder, commercial pap of the lowest common denominator.
But hey whatever rocks your boat.
Primal Scream realised that John Lennon's Gimme Some Truth off the Imagine album was far better done as a Punk Track (via Generation X version)

Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, by Andrea Motis.

Not sure which I prefer, they're both sublime.

Cindra, a bit late to comment on this particular post, but Scott Bradlee is a frickin genius; almost anything by PMJ is a delight to both the ears and eyes. I tend not to think of them so much as “covers”, as genre swapping re-imaginations, of which the composer/original artist might well opine “gee, that kinda works, too”

Then there’s Puddles Pity Party; Mike’s shtick might not be for everyone, but I find the talent incandescent. He has a pretty interesting catalog, all in the Kabuki-esque costume & makeup

For yet another very powerful take on the same tune, Dave Draiman (Disturbed);

Last but not least for now, as Rick Beato has commented, when Weird Al does one of your songs, you know you’ve “arrived”. Too many there to list, but my two favorites were “Eat It”, and “Fat”
Somehow the Puddles’ link didn’t get posted correctly;

Yeah, that’s the same Haley, and yes Mike is a tall guy

Since I’m spelunking the rabbit hole that is YT, Haley and Morgan acapella, for some reason the “poor acoustics” even enhance it for me, or am I just distracted?

Somehow missed the original performance, but Stephen’s intro was especially poignant

I tend to like covers better than originals... but right now I only recall: The great late Radka Toneff's Just Like a Woman (Bob Dylan)
To be honest, any Dylan cover is better than the original.
Great songwriter and musician, but an atrocious vocalist.
