Covers that are arguably better than the originals:

Lisandro, If you like the Jeff Buckley´s version of Hallelujah -sooo beautiful-, please check out John Cale´s one in Inrockuptible´s ¨I´m your fan¨ cd, circa 1991, a most excellent album of Leonard Cohen covers.

That album was reccomended to me a couple of times now... i'm d/ling it to give it a listen. Leonard Cohen is an incredible songwriter, and the list of artist covering his work on that CD is... well... promising 🙂 Gracias!

By the way, i just thought of another cover no one mentioned: Cyndi Laupers' "Time after time", covered by Tuck & Patty. No no, don't run away - they turned the cheezy pop track into a remarcable jazzy piece, and it's among my favorite guitar performances of all time. They also did excellent covers of Hendrix's "Little wing" & "Castles made of sand", and Santana's "Europa". Can't reccomend their work enough.

time after time...

...and another by Cassandra Wilson, in the ¨Traveling Miles¨ cd.

It sould have the title of the ¨most covered song¨ in this forum!

A cover that I like a lot -full of urban angst- is Bruce Springsteen rendition of ¨In love with a Chelsea Girl¨, penned by the great Tom Waits.
Folks, don´t you think that this thread sounds a lot like the ¨High Fidelity¨ movie? What a knowledgeable people we are!
He he he...
It´s good to be here; good to see all this interest in music, this savvy...
And that it´s a good way to dispel the myth that depicts audio diyers as some brunch of monochromatic nerds with no interest in music, only in talking all day long about caps, transistors, tubes, etc.

Anti-Nowhere-League :whazzat:

WTF? 😉

So is they a band we should follow? Wot can ye tell us about them?

Unfortunately ANL are long gone (80's Brit sorta metal/hardcore, lots of banned songs, etc.).

My votes ...

  • everything on Cat Power's "The Covers Record"
  • Sonic Youth, "into the groovy"
  • The Accused's version of Lights Out (by the angry samoans)
  • Johnny Cash covering I see a Darkness by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
  • Dead Kennedys "Rawhide"

I still have the original Evatone sound sheet of "Lights Out" where the folks down in Florida bleeped out all the swears so about 10% of the song was left, funny as hell. I heard Metal Mike was a math prof at U Arizona now.

I heard a great cover of the Dead Boys "I Need Lunch" can anyone ID the group?

Yow, was a math professor (http://www.abqjournal.com/north/328946north_news03-26-05.htm) It's the other guy (Gregg Turner), and the school is a different one in the south west, but otherwise the story is true.

That's a drag about Gregg, I guess I remembered wrongly some comment from a fan site 5 or 6 years ago. I saw them live around 1980 in Boston, they played for about 45min and then said, "We just played all 23 songs we know."

Gregg said in a 2001 interview that he liked Kylie Minogue's version of 'The Locomotion', I guess that's on topic.

What a song! Pity that I have not heard the Del McCoury version, but I remember how good the original song was: those lyrics bring tears to my eyes.

I really love a Tori Amos version of a Leonard Cohen song called ¨famous blue raincoat¨ that I think it´s an incredible cover. There, Tori sings without her habitual juggernaut -in a more restrained way, nearly whispering- ; this one never fail to bring tears to my eyes too.
Belongs to a Leonard Cohen´s covers CD called ¨Tower of Song¨, circa 1985.

I saw the Tony Rice Unit last night in a little town outside of Philly. They started the set with "My Favorite Things," and yes, it was better than Julie Andrews😉

While they were at it, they did a scorching version of "Shady Grove." I haven't heard the original (only the Garcia/Grisman versions), but I can't imagine it was any better than this.
