I suppose if followers of Musk left for Mars, it may make a dent
Yes, there is evidence for this. You want the right mix of inorganic chemicals and then some source of ionising radiation - typically a young star. Which is another little twist in the story of life on Earth: the early Earth had no O2 later (little or no free atmospheric oxygen) so ultraviolet radiation from thfvdun played an important role.It appears that some amino acids came from space in asteroids.

I'm not sure who said it, but, I think it was Sir Fred Hoyle, something along the lines of:Curious perspective. In spite of all the near misses, twist and turns life succeeded here. Why couldn't it elsewhere?
We are the only the only intelligent life in the universe or there is other intelligent life out there. Both options are equally scary.
.......
They say god created heaven and earth in all its glory. He was the true DIYer, Maybe having idle hands after that he did it all over the universe and improved his work each time.
I think it was Margret Thatcher
I geddit!
As in "We have become a grandmother".
That nails it. For the world to live the "american dream" we would need 7 Earths. 8 gig would have to live like the 3'rd world and we might justHalve the humans and the problem would decrease substantially.
work it out. No cars/planes ... no consumerism. Any product would last a hundred years and be repairable.
NOPE , they won't go for it - they would push the big red button to save the "superyacht" Yah !
Or have a insurrection (civil war) over 5$ petrol and inflation. Humans are spoiled....
OS
I dont even have a superyacht. Would like to have a J class, but would also accept an open 50 without complaning.
Halve... I say 95%, Ted is with me.
1. commandment: Maintain humanity under 500 mil.

Some were not in agreement..

So that's the plan , so the remaining 5% could all have superyacht's and mansions.Halve... I say 95%, Ted is with me.
Oh , I forgot - flying (private planes). As of now , that same 5% uses 2/3 of the over-extended resources.
So get rid of the 95% useless eaters , and they can even fly their phallus's into space (tourism).
OS
YES > we are overpopulating, but the structure of 'first world' economics seems to inexorably rely on this. (a snake eating its tail)Halve the humans and the problem would decrease substantially. Get rid of plastic containers and packaging and the sea will feed everyone many times over.
Regarding plastics, I have a few passionate beliefs:
*1 First world nations don't throw about plastics 'willy nilly' creating land & water pollution.
*2 So long as it is NOT above aquafers & water-tables, we have the 'simple miracle' of burying plastics. (they do not fume such as organic matter)
*3 There is a whole new, not yet utilized industry using MIXED PLASTICS as long lasting building products.
*4 We are progressively reducing the range of consumer plastics > thereby increasing the ability of recycling.
I SAY > What we are putting into our atmosphere IS far more of a problem by an order of magnitude, and we should urgently address it 😎
PS. We are actually over-fishing coastal oceans.

Then again if I asked you in 1980 or 1990
if you could land a rocket backwards.
Or land a booster under power not parachute.
Or however you can describe it.
The answer is a very highly unlikely NO.
But here we are LOL.
I built model rockets and cars as a kid.
Then with more money built real cars.
Never had enough to build rockets.
If I had the money. Im sure me and many others
would be building them.
Low earth orbit, becomes boring after a bit.
Being it was done in the 60's

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799954/I read somewhere that survivors of suicide attempts from jumping off bridges regretted their decision soon after the jump.

Impressive. ALL 29 survivors regretted their decisions a second after jumping. It's chemical not rational.

If you'd asked me in the 1960s the answer would have been an unequivocal "yes" -- we knew how to do it, we didn't have the necessary tech at the time, but it was always going to be do-able

That of course is also a good answer for mars and other endeavors in the future, the technology may not be there today, but as long as it doesn't violate physical laws it probably will tomorrow.
The world I grew up in is largely gone, the internet and incomprehensible computing power in the palm of your hand are just a few of the changes. I do wish supersonic transport was still a thing - the economics didn't add up I guess.
