Big problems with Mars are lack of oxygen and extreme temperature cycling by day and night. Also, the cosmic rays would not be deflected due to lack of an adequately strong magnetic field and little to no atmosphere. Send probes, not people, to study it. Money spent to get to Mars would be better used to fix up damage done by humanity to our own planet. Earth is the only planet we have; there is no Planet B. Even if there were, the tyranny of distance would forever isolate us from such a planet.Colonizing Mars does seem like some kind of a science fiction phantasy, but then, so was going to the Moon. Humanity will get there someday, but given how long it took to go back to the Moon, I see no chance Mars colonization will happen in Musk's lifetime. And before we dream of terraforming the planet, we'll have to learn some basics here on Earth since our efforts so far have proven to be an unmitigated disaster.

Jan, I’m just of the thought that the engineering goal of delivering a human sized payload to any of the nearby planets is probably far easier to attain than ensuring survivability for same.
Natural formations are the lowest hanging shelter fruit. The Moon was volcanic at one time and it is believed empty lava tubes still exist. Alternatively, there're ongoing experiments building 3d printed shelters using concrete made of simulated moon dust, but that's still a ways off given the cost of shipping printing equipment.Caves on the moon? I've been in many caves here on earth, and those have air, unlike the hypothetical "empty lava tubes" on Mars.

Humans migrate for various reasons..... drought, famine, war, persecution. Those who "look outward" generally are comfortable enough in their surroundings to have the luxury of doing so.
It is obvious we do not understand, nor have awareness of our place in the cosmos.
I think that is deliberate or perhaps just some sort of purpose.

I think deep-space exploration & research is both fascinating and warranted. Who knows what we could learn 🙂
However, the idea colonizing Mars (and the need to) is just stupid and unrealistic >
