My experience is to simply use your ears while experimenting with the value of the load resistor. I am using an ortofon 2M Red cartridge and decided to
use the 47k load as best for my 2M Red after some listening sessions. Ortofon also recommends a 150pF load capacitor in parallel with the 47k (for the 2M Red), but I have omitted that capacitor. After I finished experimenting, I removed those dip switches and simply soldered a jumper wire between the 47k and the input.
Just my two cents of info.:)

Here is my CNC phono preamp I recently built into a chassis with a volume control and input selector. I built it to match a sweeptube amp I built a few years ago.
I've never felt a need for an active preamp with this amp. I started out just building a passi e preamp with a selector. Then I rememberd I had a Pyle phono preamp I bought to use temporarily and was going to put it into the chassis. But decided to uild something better and went with the CNC. A.few days ago I disconnected one pair of the inputs from the selector and wired them right off the output of the phono preamp. This way, I fan use it as a stand alone phono preamp if I wish.
I've been pretty happy with the CNC preamp.

I just finished an active subsonic filter to match this setup using the CNC phono stage.
