If you are planning mitred corners use the tape method. Works like a charm no matter the shape and you can add cleats later if desired. Mitre, align, tape, flip, glue, roll, secure. 🙂

Cal,
Nice technique!
Thanks Kevin,
Everyone note the fiberglass tape over top of the duct tape? Don't try making a box like that without it. The duct tape is the hinge and the substrate for the fiberglass but it's not strong enough to withstand that kind of tension. Fiberglass is your friend.
Cal learned the hard way so you don't have to. 😉

Cal that is genius! I am now, for the first time, prepared to give mitres a go.
The 'duct tape' you used. It looks like the plastic stuff without fabric through it. I have some really good 3M black fabric duct tape that I use to put the heating ducts back together with under my house (^$&*%#@ second rate installers). Do you think it would be strong enough without the fibreglas tape?
If not, or even still, what is the fibre glass tape usually used for, I have never seen it before and knowing its usual application should help me to find it.

When I saw the title of this thread Butt joints, wood glue strong enough? my immediate thought was: that all depends on how big your butt is.
So wanted to make that lame remark, and that brought me across Cal's brilliant contruction method. Something to remember, tnx,

Thanks guys,
Mick I think you need the fiberglass there no matter what. It doesn't stretch or tear so it makes for good joints but it's not that sticky so it's good to have the duct tape to act as a hinge (along the seams) and as a substrate (along the whole length) for the fiberglass tape. You should be able to get it at most hardware type stores.
Fiberglass adhesive tape:
good quality Self adhesive Fiberglass tape products, buy good quality Self adhesive Fiberglass tape products from alibaba.com
Here's the 3M stuff:

Trivia: Do you know what 3M stands for? No Googling. 🙂

Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing. yeah some of us are old....
I would suggest metal flake and Candy Apple translucent paint, then you could sell them for the price of a house!
Please don't. What if you veneer them with something with a nice figure and do a french polish? Then you can sell them for even more and anyone can buy them. Not just my twenty year old neighbor who is broke like most twenty year olds.

I think when it's time to do them I will allow someone else the pleasure. Finishing is not my specialty. I am a framer at best. Sell them? Geez then I'd be down to 31 pairs and that simply won't do.

A local fellow collected interesting cars. Built his own museum. He was offered a staggering sum for one of his cars. He hired a British panel thumper and a few other specialists. They built him an exact replica. He could drive the replica without the insurance company going nuts. So he sold the original.
So if the right offer comes along... take it!
Cal, is there a thread somewhere that shows what is going on with those speakers? Do the holes in the back sum up to a tuned port? What are the rectangles infront of the two higher speakers and, more generally, - wow!
Bit of a thread hijack though... Mind you the 3M thing was a ways off topic 🙂 I had no idea what 3M stood for other than, in all seriousness, a brand I can trust.

Hi Mick,
I was away at the diy fest. Yes the thread is here.

The holes in the back of the Altecs are because Dave showed me how that reduces the boxy sounding midrange and I really like the effect. The woofer is sealed. I'm not quite sure what you mean with the rectangles. Are you talking about the bases?

Ever try a Schroeder diffuser inside the box?
Hi Simon,
Nope and I'm not sure that would do it. Once Dave showed me, what is similar to an open back mid, I feel a bit spoiled. My ears really like it.

Well next thing to try is a diagonal baffle/brace inside the woofer enclosure to keep the woofers from "Chugging."
But you also migh want to try a larger mid box with diffusion.
