Best Amp & cables for Fostex FE206En BLH

Not too sure about it, they do recommend a "thin" sheet in their official doc (see bellow). I do think its rather overdone in my example, wondering what material and how much would be "thin". Can i just use some 5mm felt sheet, would that work?

3/4" 'felt' as in the once popular jute automotive sound damping, plush carpet underlayment will 'do a number' on ~500 Hz/up, so either go 1" to knock down the worst of 400 Hz or double up the 3/4".

I install Fostex FE206Super in D55(T. Nagaoka model).

I have used tube, analog, and digital amplifiers, and I prefer digital amps of about 100 watts.
Currently, I am using NuPrime STA-9.
The cable used is ladder type.

No sound-absorbing material is used at all, so there is a little horn noise.

Thanks guys! Will be working on the speakers abit more after the vacation. But today I'm quite proud that my first build succeded. New hifi gear sure feels different when one builds it oneself! Thanks to Nelson and all the people behind diyaudio for making this stepping stone into diy possible. 🙏

Hey, OP here! I'm feeling the itch to tinker with the system further and I'm hoping I can get some wayfinding advice.

In short, I'm happy the amp I built (ACA) has burned in nicely (and not burned out😀). I'm enjoying it daily with the FE206en BLH. The preamp im using is a Chord Mojo2, which has some dsp capabilities, which I, together with high(er) Rout of ACA, was hoping could solve the shouty mids of the fostex. With higher volume and well recorded and mostly instrumental material it sort of works, but yeah, im sure now the balance is not quite there yet.

A measurement with a shoddy mic is showing a peak between 500-1500 at the listnening position, above that off-axis helps bring the highs in check. But its those 500-1500 i cant do anything about.

So now im considering 3 options.

1. passive network in series
Will that totally kill the performance as ACA only has 8w on tap?

2. A line level filter (see attached).
I saw mr. Pass suggest this sort of network in a related topic, argued it works "better" than the one above. What do you think?

3. do a bigger change, try a different driver in this cabinet or this fostex in a different cabinet that can support the 50-500hz enough to flatten out the response (a bass reflex box?)

Also, do say that both the fostex and their recommended horn are no longer worth bothering with in this day and age, if you feel so. That is something I want to do down the line anyway, but it feels like I can do more learning on what i have.

Thanks!
Alex

The passive speaker level network shouldn't be different to the line level one as far as what the amp will give you, because either way that will be mostly set by the bass.

That filter is a shelving filter, not a bandstop filter like you suggested (500-1500).

Thanks Allen, I realise that, but the upper range 1.5khz and above) can be tweaked by toeing in, so a shelf could work, as there is excessive energy all the way up. The line level filter attached was @Nelson Pass recommendation for this very driver, but I'm not sure if this still works with the ACA as Rout is slightly higher (1.5ohm) than a conventional voltage amp.

What is the difference between the two approaches? Can somebody scale this line-level filter to a passive "variant", given nom.R for the driver is 8ohm andamps Rout 1.5ohm?

Started to mention the finger kneading, but don't recall anyone ever trying it or at least reporting any results, but if done too much for whatever reason, ?? member back then had a good way to work backwards by misting/spraying 'cheap as you can find' (Dollar Store nowadays in USA) lacquer hairspray.

:^)

I have seen the neotech, used it for a client build, very nice but i had no time to live with it.

I am going to order a rolll soon i think.

Dave am interested in what your thoughts are on the Neotech cables in the near future I hope? Very expensive for a speaker cable by the foot specialty from Japan of am right?

Ok, I duplicated the Nelson Pass filter and I used the impedance plot from the Fostex site..

I found this using standard values..

Thanks Allen, appreciate it. The result indeed looks comparable. Did you take into account Rout of the amp whivh is 1.5ohm? I wonder if that drops the resistor to 5.3 in turn? Also, wonder why the line filter is "better" according to Nelson?
