Thank you so much for the help! I added some dampening in the chassis and on the Nutube and the ringing went away.
(responding to 8182)I am only putting this out there to say yes, one of these mechanical controls would be a great idea. I recently used one in a project. The price of $120 is prohibitive for this project though. On the plus side, it obviates the need for a balance control.
Gears! I found a NOS Noble brand concentric ganged pot with knobs on eBay:
Good build quality, circa 1970.

🙂This got me thinking. On the subject of balance controls. Well, to be honest. No one actually really needs a ”balance control” knob. It is in real life only a very, very un-inportant piece of clutter in the signal chain. Unless something in the music playback chain is a seriously underperforming piece of shajze.
That should not be needing to be ”balance controlled”.
And actually just needs a system tuning dude/ repair dude - not a balance control?
Or am i missing something important??? 🙂🤚
JeyDee,
Before I put in the ganged concentric volume control, I was the System Tuning Dude. My crossovers are on the top shelf out of reach, so I can't adjust them easily. Our local FM classical station is a little low on the right, so I had to lean my head to the right when listening.

Sometimes i am missing balance control. If you are using different sources like vinyl, fm. tape recorder, streamer then balance control can be very usefull.🙂This got me thinking. I agree with Nelson here. In fact, a stereo volume control gives you less control than 2 separate mono volume controls. The idea of having a ganged set of controls made to mechanically track each other unless you set them differently, is an ingenious way to keep the balance between the two that you prefer/need.
Relay based attenuators can allow you to adjust "balance" too, just set left_atten_in_dB = (right_atten_in_dB ± Constant). All you need is separate control signals for the two channels, and an add or subtract operation in firmware.
From the pictures it looks like that the power switch and the selector switch are both identical?
What is the mouser code?
What are the mouser codes if those are different?
Recommended switches to get?

It's this one. I just checked in my chaos bag and found it 😅 I haven't used them in my build, so i just checked the markings on it.

I posted over on the F5 build guide thread that I found a set of boards that I’m giving away as I no longer need them. While I was rummaging around boxes after a recent house move I also came across my B1 with Korg board that I built. It was working fine when I last tested it but there is some minor damage to the upper solder pad for the supply connection. This is also up for grabs to anyone (continental US) who’s interested as I have way too much on my plate right now. See photos for details. PM me if interested. First come first served!

I can't lie. I would be interested. I have two of these cigar boxes. Still waiting for the second one to be populated with yes, a B1.

Question about the potentiometer (volume control) and its value. I am trying to choose between 10k and 50k ohm.
I don't know what is the input impedance of B1 with Korg Triode pre-amp (low?).
Schiit Gungnir DAC's output impedance is only 75 ohm. Would it mean that 10k pot is better than 50k (less ohms, lower noise)?
But if I connect some other sound source with possibly higher output impedance, 50k pot would be the safest option to work with "all normal hifi" components?
And still in that case, I could connect that other sound source through my 75 ohm DAC, and still be happy with 10k pot?
Can you hear the difference between 10K or 50K from quality pot like TKD 2P-2511S?

I have a update for my own build that has taken a long period of time to come together.
As I have not posted for some time on the planning the Build, I will share a few pointers to how the build evolved.
I caught on to this Thread many years ago and since, have been instrumental in encouraging Four individuals to build the B1 Korg.
For me fortunately, I know all Four Builder, as they all do each other as well. The individuals are members of my local HiFi Group.
It gets better, between the individuals there are now with my own build nearly complete 8 x B1 Korg Pre-Amp's Built.
It gets better still, as two of the individuals experimented with VC's and now one is adorned with a Khozmo and another is with a Promethius TVC. One of these individuals has worked on Cap' exchanges as well.
The builder of my version of the B1 Korg, has six builds under their belt inclusive of mine.
The use of variations of Cap's and VC's is thoroughly investigated, one has original Black Gates used on a Three Box Modular design, (within the Group at the demo', this BG>Modular design was declared to be something very special)
Not too long after the BG model, another B1 Korg was produced using a modern readily available Cap', this as the option has proved to be an almost identical sonic to the BG's.
There is also a Balanced Version produced as well, of which my finished model will make it two Balanced Versions having been produced.
More about mine, (Note: I don't do EE Talk, I am dependent on others for their skills).
It is built using Two of Five Only produced PCB Boards (non-official PCB's), that were produced to enable a few hooks to be carried out on the PCB. There is suitable real estate for Huge Components, to me as a numpty this is quite obvious.
There are a few other additions to the Circuit Layout that can be used as an option, but I can't elaborate, as I don't know the purpose for the add on when incorporated.
The components used on this Balanced design are with a selection that are created using the EE's Hook, as a result of building quite a few of these and working to discover the sonic that closely mimics the very well received BG sonic.
A EE who is a family member of the EE building my Pre', has Power Supply experience, has also contributed in the earlier days to help with a PS design for all earlier built models, which I feel confident is still the design being used to date, no tweaks as of yet to the original.
The VC's are 50K Very Closely Matched Stepped Attenuators. These are produced by another EE, who is a good friend of mine and have their own Pre-Amp design using an identical build Topology for the VC, but at a different 'K'.
It has been a very nice outcome to know this friend has contributed to my Pre-Amp' Builds produced components.
On Sunday 25-06, I was invited to a Local HiFi Group event to listen to a Group Members System for the first time, now their home renovation was a completed project.
I had a idea the day was to create a memorable impression, as Klipsch Jubilee's are the Resident Speaker and the entire system is not a cheap purchase.
As an aside to agenda in place for the day, there were two extensions of entertainment to be encountered.
The first being the System owner and EE building my Pre', were to give a briefing of their experience had at the Two Day Visit to Munich High End 2023.
The second being that after the recess for lunch, the brought along devices by attendees were to be added to / exchanged with other devices resident in the system.
The attendees were blown away by the resident systems presentation, I myself have today has a Jubilee session using Youtube to get over the Cold Turkey the experience has left.
Then the recess was over and the HiFi Phooking Around commenced.
First up a Grundig 3W Valve Radio from the 50's, well what a surprise it was the best I've heard it since I last encountered it used with Large 1970's model Tannoy Speakers.
Then a P-P 300b Power Amp' has been put on in its place, the Amp's has a design that is associated with Tim De Paravicini, back in the late 90's. The Amp's has been fully overhauled and the EE owner has tweaked a few areas on the Circuit.
This brought in a presentation that was Show Stopper, the system owner was a Cheshire Cat with a very noticeable beaming grin.
A change of CD Source and DAC followed, which in use with 300b, showed up a new flavour to the presentation, especially as the Resident Hegel DAC was now replaced with a Valve DAC.
I won't be too analytical, but as a basic description the Valve DAC certainly pumped a few additional 'lbs per square inch' into the soundstage.
The Final addition was the Bread Board Assemble Korg B1, as a single channel being used as a Stereo Amp.
The impact was instant, the depth of the Soundstage had no horizon line it seemly stretched onto infinity.
Details were very very evident.
The attendees were quick to ask for some earlier used recordings to be replayed, especially the ones known for their qualities as a recording.
What was to happen was quite something, the Micro details and Micro Dynamics were there, quite noticeable, individuals who know their replayed recording, were extremely impressed stating there is now details presented with a presence not heard before.
I was locked on to the Sound Staging and Bass Control along with working out where the details were at their most clear and certainly not being perceived as having a smearing.
Whilst doing this analysis I was also aware the Envelope of the Note>Vocal was manifesting to the point the Shape could visually be modelled in the mind, as if it were Tangible.
Here is my conundrum, it the highlight of my day the first impression made on me by my half finished Pre-Amp Build, or is it the very vocally voiced appraisal of the attendees and their follow up mails reiterating on the experience had, or is it the report given by the two individuals who had been to Munich High End, where they both stated that they had not discovered a sonic of this quality whilst visiting many exhibits at the show.
A Big Shout Out 📢, ️to the Korg B1 Design Team and Thank You for their continued support in helping others with achieving their own ambitions for the B1 Korg Builds.
