ATC SCM7 . . . with Papa's diy amp?

Listening to Chinese pipa . . .

I draw a horizontal x-axis indicating time and a vertical y-axis of high-low scale. The sound of each note is clean and short, and appears along the time axis with different high-low . . . one after one . . . And, on the plane shaped by the time and high-low axes, series of scenes alternately appears—clouds, sunshine, mountains, woods, waterdrops, smiling faces, puppet dance, light joy, loneliness . . .

Ah, nice CD and music . . .

It seems that last night I fell into a sleep before having finished writing. Continued here . . .

No. Modern music.

Producer's Notes

Once upon a time some friends and I visisted Zhou Zhuang, the "water country" in southern China. That was my first visit, and its classical eastern beauty swiftly captured me. When I sat in an old-fashioned teahouse they performed "Ping Tan"--a form of Chinese classical music, I was amazed by pipa for the very first time. Since then the seed of producing a pipa album had been buried in my heart.

Western instruments (like piano, guitar, bass, drums, strings), eastern instruments (like flutes, er-hu, san-xian), ethnic vocals, world music, classic music, Jazz, Fusion, New Age . . . All these mixed up together! It was difficult to integrate all these elements within one album, but I kept trying. There were days when the all the trials failed, but there also days when the inspirations flowed through me and taugh parts were suddenly finished. Well, drinking and chatting with friends helped a lot.

As time goes by unnoticed, the impressions of Zhou Zhuang, Qing-zhang plateau, Mongolia plateau, African tribes, spring time of southern China and even the children chorus of the church in Vienna all mingled into one album. To put all these seemingly irrelevant elements together is something you can only do in dreams or music.

When listening to the final version of the music right after album production, I lit up a cigarette. I wonder what feelings will I get if I listen to images of Pipa in that teahouse of Zhou Zhuang.

I'd like to thank all the friends who helped me during the album production. I also look forward to chatting, drinking and tasting tea with friends at home. That really feels great!

1. Why all the output devices for 7watts?

2. How close did you match?? 30mv?40mv?20mv?

3. If you could build just one version of stereo unit..Which would it be..BABOZEN or F4..??!!

Hi,

1.
My F4 can be converted into more powers than 7watts whenever I want. The reason nevetheless why only 7watts is that I re-used old 12V-0-12V trans. If I, however, want to have more power, only thing I should do is replacing the trans with higer secondary voltages. But, no. I'm fully happy with 7watts. It gives me the sweet first watt.

2.
I just checked VGS of all MOSFETS I had, based on:

http://www.passdiy.com/howto/matching.htm

and grouped them just with respect to the closest ones.

3.
F4 gives me nice music and more fun for different variations as Papa's service manual demonstrates . . . I'm using F4 while my family using BaboZen. My wife feels that they have almost the same sound but BaboZen has a bit more muscle.

I like this CD.
Whenever I return back from noisy party, I light on candle lights
and put this CD on . . .
The somewhat shaded voices and instruments go right with the candle-lighted room
and my post-party relaxation . . . Sweet . . .

Power is on F4 . . .

You look fine.
I’m just a young mind.
Party . . . ?
Actually, I meant gathering rather than party . . .
Often, we meet our customers and friends on the dinner tables with 52%-alcohol-contained water of special smell . . . Maybe too often . . .
And, we go sometimes to Karaoke and sing, Stairway to Heaven . . .
Getting tired . . .

I much more like to go mountain hiking with minimum food . . . alone . . . yeah, such mountains behind you . . .

Great, just what i needed to fully wake up, the thought of Babo sweating and in his underwear, singing Louie Louie in a mic.

Me has that with a recording of Chet baker and Rachel Gould from '79, works better than talking whoosah/Goosfraba to yourself.
Haah, me is current champion in grandpa class of the summer beach house party.

O ya?

4 Kool brings power bass. And, plays forming a lage stage on the beach . . . A guitar jumps on the stage, dacing as if to be the best dancer . . . An organ pushes the guitar away and dances in the joyful eyes surrounding the stage . . . Friendly competetion . . . Of course, without conclusion who was better . . .

My daughter's father just passed away young . . . Hope he will relax his life in heaven . . . Amen . . .

I have already talked about this tube pre briefly. It has the same circuit of the first two stages of Marantz 7 line stage, but with different types of tubes and different values of resistors and coupling capacitors.

Last night, I have changed the current feedback resistor value of 15K to 30K. It has been done to incease the voltage gain of the pre. The gain has been 17.5dB before when the pre has been connected to the input impedance of F4, and now changed to 20dB. And, I have also replaced two metal resitors with wire-wound ones.

F4 seems to be satisfied with this mod. The sound is changed louder and bit more relaxed. Of course, my ears are satisfied too. The latest version of ATC SCM7 do real good job . . .

Kind of Blue . . . old but evergreen . . . very good performance!

Nothing is forever..

I replaced the transformer from two 12Vac secondary 400VA with
two 18Vac secondary of 300VA.. I just wanted to see whether
there would be any change in sound from ATC SCM7 (power hungry?)..

Now the rail voltages are increased from about 13V to about 20V..

I also replaced Jfet source resistors of 39ohms I have used with
22ohms as the original..

The bias is lowered, i.e. from 1.35A/Ch to about 1A/Ch.. This is mainly
to keep the heat sinks temp to the similar level.. I must be an
outsider of the group who advocate higher bias..

The 300VA trans shows no single problem in feeding current to ATC
SCM7 speakers.. If the speaker is the power hungry one, then it
must be meaning of voltage hungry.. not current hungry..

Through this tweaking, mmm.. I do not feel any noticeable sound
change.. At least to my ears, no change.. just keeping nice sound..

I'm missing diyAudio and good members too..
But, I have to set up a new team of the company..
And, I have to complete it as a good quality team..
Until then, too busy..

Nevertheless, would visit more frequently..

Missing diyAudio and good members. . . would visit more
frequently?
Hmm. . . it seems that the life is not that easy. . .

After having got the acceptance to leave the hospital, last week
I could come back home. And, took the attached photo. . .
(ah? oh. . . lung cancer. . . actually small cell cancers near by the
lung. I needed just chemotherapy treatment, not anything else)

It seems that I have very luckily saved my life. . .

So, I am now planning a small diy audio project. . .
And, I am thinking to donate a small amount to diyAudio through Pass Labs forum. . . I have learned many many good things through, particularly, Pass Labs forum. . .

Cheers!

I am going to update my Babo Zen into F5 using one EI transformer
(leftover from the old Zen projects) of 2x 25V secondary of 500VA.

My concern is that the secondary voltaage of 25V is somewhat
bigger with the rail voltages than Papa's recommendation (23-25V).
Therefore, I would like to cutt off the upper marging using Zen5
type regulator. . . as shown attached. . .

Do you thing the concept will be useful? And, the size of the PSU
caps, 33,000uF, are big eough to cover both L&R ch?

Thanks,
