Hi guys
I've owned Centaur Minors, twice. Great speakers. As was said, some would have walked away from the maintenance on these vintage classics
Are you aware that there's a supplier of replacement ribbons which are meant to be better than the originals. I believe that they use a material that is lighter than the original, allowing even more of the great ribbon transparency and detail
Here's the link

yeah, getting Graz to answer emails is a challenge tho. He is a busy man. I am trying to buy a set from him at the moment.
He's busy finalising the release of a new premoum ribbon speaker, a four year project.
I may have missed it, has anyone calculated the box volume of the Centaur Minor?

....my Minors are like new.
Likewise, but most of their life was coupled to an MC240. The most powerful amp is the current classdaudio 60 watt.

As I remember, the C/M volume is 14 l.
Looking at drive units again the cast frame version of the Vifa P17 that the minor used is available again. Xmax is quoted as +/-7 which isn't shabby. If the calculations show I can live with that then this is a much cheaper phase 1 option for OB operation as only need 2 more drivers not 4....
Tonight did the first order xmax calculations looking at SPL. It's clear I will need to fix my sub, and probably crossover around 140Hz. I've set the goal to be able to hit 100dB SPL at 1m to give me the headroom when listening to the few recordings I have with a high dynamic range (telarc 1812 for example). most of the time I don't go much over 80dB.
attached screenshots from first plays with the edge. I need to treat myself to basta over xmas and do some more detailed simulations. Whilst of course chanting the mantra 'trust not thy simulator lest the results beguile thee'

Thank you, sounds right. You can't get deep bass from just14 litres.
And you can't get 500 Hz from a sub.
As well as the ribbons, I should replace the Vifas too.
why replace them. Given they are only covering 120-750Hz do I really need anything better? If I could fit 8" in there I would, but I can't.

The Vifas are ok, better than most.
But there are better midwoofers, especially if they only need to go up to c 500 Hz, and (given the small 14 litre box, shouldn't be asked to perform to do clean bass at 100 dB below about 70 Hz
I might have missed, are you intending to use subs?
Cheers
well the box is going, I want to go Open baffle. I have an infinity modulus sub to refurb.
Someone has just posted some good deals on some 8 and 10" scanspeaks on the swap meet. I am hoping that, by the time I have worked out if I can use them for LF someone will have snapped them up...

Thanks for the heads up on the Vifas......$80ea US... but it matches great lot of output in the 400-600hz..sounds that way to me ,,,I would stay with one 61/2"... an add a 8"10 or 12....I use 2 12" subs with my stock minors an it kiks out the tunes....dose some things better than my Stages....if I could get the highs of the minors....but can get the back of the MT open like the minors....
keep up the work.
more than I seen in years long live the Apogees.............

I'm very space limited. I might be able to put an 8" under each minor to replace the stands, but I cannot go any wider on the baffles. I have enough of a challenge working out where to get a single 12" sub into the living room. I really need to move, but the location is good. If we could find a different room for the digital piano all the problems would go away. But if I had the space I'd be looking for some 'real' apogees 🙂
Yes the room....My studio is 18'X40'X13'...with a 7' moveble wall.......I have had the Duetta an endup using the MT with a pr of Acoustat 2+2 esl....best sound ever ...........never saw a pr of real Apogee that did not have a Bass panel Buzzz... if thay have ever been moved.... good luck with that......
I have had 5pr of the Sages....never buzz.....but the Stages are only 60lb....all the other fullrang BUZZZ an over 100lbs.....what a hart brake buzzzzzzz.....I am to old cant take it....
Back to the room.....even the Stages can fill a room 28'X50'.......an the stock minors rock.....lot of fun

When I bought the minors I had a nice big den in chicago. Now I have an 12x13 living room. When I demo'd them (second hand) it is the only time I have heard phantom sounds so far outside and behind the speakers. I actually looked round the back of them I was so suprised. However they do their 'trick' when they have room to breathe they are top rate. Not shabby crammed into a small room either.
An here the deal.....Apogees minore,Centaur......thay come up on CL an thay just set there.....weeks....my Stages $400 for the pr...No one will touch them.....The Minor or a must buy....there crossover so high the MT if not handeld an thay play you good to go.....picup $200 minors .......$250-300 Centaurs... crossover vary low...can get driven like stages to hard.....with the stock crossovers....that MT moved a LOT!
I have felt it get HOT.....tuchet from the back on the Capton only never tuch the Alomon....olis from hands a not good.....vary hot, fools can kill the MT...with a 50watt recever....

I put together the 6-1/2" Peerless nomex OB mtm arrangement. Didn't like the initial run.
I prefer the single 8" vifa, so I'll persue the ribbon/vifa OB arrangement. The baffle may well end up just like the original Centaur but without any enclosure. Anyone have a feel for the effect on performance of having an 8" driver on the edge of a 15" wide x 42" high baffle? Vertically centered.

I've had my Centuars from new in 1991 and never had an ounce of trouble from them.
The only reason mine are canibalized, is because of the DIY bug and my retirement.
The bass was lacking and I have never had any luck in blending subwoofers. Until now.
I just knocked together a Ripole type woofer to test, using one of my Dayton 10" subs. Very inefficient, but the sound! Room modes are gone. It does not go any lower than in a sealed enclosure, but the mush and room bloom from 32-100hz is gone. Any bass instrument sounds very convincing and clean. So, I will look at incorporating a sub like this in each of my final(?) build.
