yup, its not slave labour if you feed them.
could you use the same sampling rate for the screen shots and then try again with metal film?… yeah I know.. but you're the one with the oscilloscope 😀
edit: and the same chip !!

Grab a RaspPi, use Volume or the like and the Pacific header direct into the fifo, it's better than USB and cheaper too......
Networked from a nap drive, works nice and clean!

Did they ever figure out that 44.1k thing?
fromIt is definite that BBB cannot support 44.1KHz and family. See page 75 of the System manual: https://github.com/CircuitCo/BeagleBone-Black/blob/master/BBB_SRM.pdf?raw=true
There is a 24.576 MHz connected to the Audio subsystem in order to generate the audio frequencies.
Fortunately, this is also connected to an expansion pin (GPIO3_21) and the oscillator can be disabled in s/w. For now the only way for bit perfect output is through USB.

The Pi "generates" it 44.1 family of frequencies, so if you currently have Ian' s fifo it is "mostly" irrelevant. The BBB won't play 44.1 either particularly well/or at all dependent on it mood, due to a single clock which is being designed/built around as the Botic cape by TPA. When this arrives is an unknown due to other projects.
When I say "mostly" irrelevant is due to implementation and the resolution of the listening equipment and area. What is invisible on some setups will glaring on others. The usual "cables make no difference" argument can be inserted here. I know they make a difference on some systems due to resolution and the gear both as source and amplification and as transducer. Everything going makes a difference. Having a solar inverter offline but still powered makes a difference to noise on the line and then to the sound in the listening get chair. Snake oil? find someone with a resolving system and try it.
The Pi is great as a source compared to the pc/USB route, I have both Wave I and Amanero devices, and the pi with a separate PS, sounds smoother and more musical. PS makes the difference. And then there is the cost. Pi is a bargain. And simple.
See if I can get some photos up soon of the current setup.

Hi Drew,
for following the project as an alternative to usb input, have you please some sources and links to understand how to connect a RaspPi with I2S and the future coreboard ?
E.g. : is it possible with a Pi development board to allow I2S with uf.l connectors for impedance matching ?
The way to add a squeeze server clone ?
Picoreplayer will run on a pi and talk to squeeze server. Haven't used it but goggle is your friend.
Look up volumio, and the TPA thread on "an open embedded appliance", it's in their section on the forum, am sure there were diagrams about connection to the P5 section on the board.
Am mobile currently, so don't have them with.

Here's my reasoning for the decoupling return current layout. If its good enough for John Brown (ecdesigns) shouldn't it be good enough for us?

Why?
You need to start thinking for yourself. John has made significant
contributions to the development of TDA1541 DAC hat off to him!
Having said this he has also gone around in circles many many times not
taking advice from people who clearly can offer it.
Look at the DEM debacle - which frequency? Is DEM even better?
Early analog stages used hybrid SS tubes, I suggested cut to the chase with
a decent current conveyor very early on.
Clocks made from multiple crystals etc etc - just get a decent SC-cut OCXO
this is known technology.
Power supplies etc etc
For the TDA1541 DAC board, -use an internal uninterrupted ground plane
directly under the DAC with 4 layer board.

Agreed. Point in case would be that the image that was 'good enough for John' has now changed in his recent implementation, the SMD decoupling caps are on top and along side the chip.. pretty much the way Pedja has done it for the last 10 years.
I should say that I do think Ryan does think for himself - he builds stuff and evaluates.
… I was in agreement about Mr Brown reinventing everything a thousand times and ending up back where he was. I predict his next model will be in simultaneous mode, based on his recent evaluation of the topology.. and again to say that Pedja has been doing it this way also for years.
If I had the spare money, I'd just buy Pedjas DAC and be done with it.

I haven't seen Pedjas DAC, will check it out when I get the chance.
cheers

Shane, it reminds me when Marce said better a plain ground for DEM than multiple traces, but RyanJ follows John... this last not using anymore the ground like that as you just writted! And I surmise the outputstages of the AYA2 to be superior, I would like to hear the both brands side by side ! Think John bet on the headphones fame and high end market of personal computer DAC... World of individuality... Why not, myself I should add RCA connector as well ! like a true USB2/3 ! But this is a little exclusive and portable : sd card reader, 3.5 jacks... why not, you have to be original to exist sometimes : AMR maid a lot of shadows with their marketing behavior... Look at the OP : only a more famous dac chip gave him a doubt in relation to his AMR CD player with a less famous dac chip of the same Philips maker in relation to the AMR flag ship ! People are under influence...
Fill in the 30 euro form for the AYA2 2014 with the both uf.l connectors for simultanous mode... let's make a GB for the IanCanada two simultanous Channel I2S to PCM... (Hurry : only 14 pcb of AYA2 left...).
It will give you the luck & joy to test both pcbs of our utopic semi-collaborative (now...) project which aloow simultanous mode and offer one of the two for someone of your family !

Hi zenelectro,
The comparison I made with one of Johns layouts was only one example where i've seen the same layout, one of my old Philips players has a very similar grounding layout, so all i did was try it and test it. It sounded great so i thought i'd stick with it for my future setup.
Yes, after all with those not too fast RF frequencies, it's not so important. I will try myself for testing the OSHIFI way I talked here already (no DEM caps).
RyanJ, have you an idea of the date for production ?

Hi Eldam,
I received my test board last week, and everything works ok. Just a few minor changes to the position of some components. No exact date as yet.
Oshifis only removed the 14 filter caps, not the dem cap.
🙂 : a photograph, a photograph ! cool ! Good work of the printer ?
Oups you right, I writed too fast (and no beers 🙄; the DEM is 470 pF most of the time with TDA1541A - included in TDA1541-non A) : yes of course just the filtering caps !
For those one (but maybe the two bigger) the best choices seems between these 4 :
- none
- acrylic smd (Cornell Dublier or Panasonic... IIRC)
- silvered mica smd
- the smd caps used by AMR (don't know the type, any AMR owner reader here with a usefull input ?)

Hi Zenelectro,
Marce fellow whom job is RF board designer for industries gave an input somewhere in DIYAUDIO to say than 4 layers can sometimes be badder if not well designed than a simple intterupted groundplane for both analogic & digital signals (it needs much more good soft and test and equipments RyanJ has not)! Here we have the luck as you already know than the NOS is not too fast and the DGND is not too far than the I2S inputs (on the same side of the chip). And maybe here the filtering cap gnd plane island should be on the same side of the rest of the gnd plane around the chip ! This is a Marce's input who think here a standalone gnd plane for both signal is enough with this chip. Unluckily he had application notes for pros about the TDA but loose the document in an old virused pc !🙁. But here 35 yeras of diyers expériences readable eveywhere is maybe good enough to make a good V1 coreboard we all hope with the synergie of the exchanges and the addition of the already existing inputs as Audiolapdance fellow said and linked !
AndreaMori fellow is designing for himself and for the communauty a little daughter board to be stacked near the DAC chip ! RyanJ normaly add two vias for that ! (we talk about that somewhere above). NDK brand for them best Crystal is minimum 22.xxx but Andrea can ask a cotation for Laptech special cuts : we wait for an idea of the price, unfornatully I surmise not to be cheap... but your right this is an important part of the design.
I rememnber an input of John who said than the TDA1541 has an intreseq jitter of 150 ps due to its design which is impossible to get lower even with a Crystal maid by nano print technologie or God himself (assuming he listen to a DAC!😀)

"Distinction-1541"
Hi Eldam, always a pleasure to read your posts, thanks for your support.
Ill attach a picture of the current test setup I have running at the moment. Ive also made a few changes to the design that I will also attach.
To comment on the sound improvement would be slightly biased!... but it does sound better than my home made acid etched board by a good margin.
In the amended design I have spaced the power supply caps out a bit and also added jumper pins for easy selection of data input modes.
distinction
dis·tinc·tion [dih-stingk-shuhn]
noun
1. a marking off or distinguishing as different: His distinction of sounds is excellent.
2. the recognizing or noting of differences; discrimination: to make a distinction between right and wrong.
3. a discrimination made between things as different; special regard or favoritism: Death comes to all without distinction.
4. condition of being different; difference: There is a distinction between what he says and what he does.
5. a distinguishing quality or characteristic: It has the distinction of being the oldest house in the town.

Wow, Very nice looking... I like it. And it has now a name with deep 3D meaning.
"but it does sound better than my home made acid etched board by a good margin." :
Do you get a chance to the Panasonic LE caps instead the FPs of your photogaph ?

Hi Eldam,
No i have not really played around with different caps in these positions as of late, as i have never really noticed as big improvements compared to layout configuration. Ive always been more focused towards lowering the nasty "jitter!" which i have found to be any area to obtain the biggest audio quality improvements. Capacitors - for me are always a fine tune adjustment.

Hi Ryan,
Caps choice in the last JP/Subbu Dac V3 design shows me huge differences from good to "astonishing". But yes, you can't choose the icing on the cake if the layout is bad!
But for me my last tunning where nearer from thicker icing like : marmelade, chocolate, cream, coconuts with amonds, chantilly : the cake has very different taste and more than personal tasting some combination just gave bad cakes !
It's like making beers : same same but (a little more than) different : Plus de 100 bières ? Bilde av Perigueux i Dordogne - TripAdvisor
