Alpair MAOP 10.2

It's not the speaker that disappoints me.
i can feel that maop10is much acurate than the others I have (chr70, chn-50p, sb20) but I think that the boxes I built: pensil, DDVP-15
TWTD-13.5. I have the impression that the search for the lowest possible low-frequency cutoff disturbs the overall response of the speaker.
Frugel horn xl is not possible for me due placement contraint.
I'm wondering today if there are boxes that have a more precise sound rendering, a better definition, "a better 3D effect" even if it means sacrificing a little low frequencies response. In any case, I was thinking of using a subwoofer.
The speaker does almost everything well, but making it go too low makes it "neglect" the rest. It may be that I am becoming too demanding with age... 😉or that I have also taken the time to build several boxes for a single speaker to see these differences

@Pierrick59
It seeem that you need some Fonken boxes, if you want it to "disappear" and image well.
By the way, we'd like to see some of the boxes that you built. Don't be shy if they are not so beautiful and shiny; I built some really ugly (but working) creations 😀
P.s. what amplifier are you using? My 10.3 can sound dreadful with some amps (D class junk) and shine with the class A transconductance amp...

Pierrick59,

You have come to rather mature conclusion - it's not always the best to chase the lowest frequency extension... 🙂

From my experience, I think that you may find the Planet10 Mini-Onken to your liking - tight, tuneful bass, and the wide chamfers help to keep the diffraction signature low.

p.s. looked like Vix and I were suggesting the same cabinet and our posts crossed 🙂

Here is a quick photo, there are functional but not aesthetic achievements.

but that will pose another problem having a subwoofer well in phase with the maop10

Do you like SB20FRPC30-8 more then Mark Audio?
No. sb20 goes down naturally but maop 10 give more detailled sound. but you compare a really different budget...45 euros and 170 euros...
the sb20 is really good. you have to give really much more money to have equal quality at mark audio or everywhere

You can build a Waw, that should relieve the maop from the bass frequencies, and you won't have phase issues. You just need 2 (or 4) additional woofers...
yes i can build a waw. but for this i need a filter and i'm not abble to calculate that and and calculate a box. normally i will receive the MA 200 begin of may is it a clever option?

i have seen Fonken, Mini onken, mar-ken10.2. i have never listen them i don't what to do i don't know wich model gives the best result as definition, diffraction

Nice builds!

Not sure what effect this might have on the bass reproduction and such, but looks like possibly low number of plys in wood and some voids… resonance? Leaks? Then of course there’s room size, shape and placement. And of course, the amplifier and source. So many variables when it comes to bass. I’m sure you’re already aware of these things given your prolific building…likely you are more knowledgeable than I am, but worth a mention. Always good to look at the fundamentals before moving on to entirely new designs.

muddy sounding? can be, because maop is on mellow side, you can install small tweeter for 8k+?

"Muddy sounding" can be an amp's fault. Not because it is a bad amp per se, but maybe it's not the best match for the maop. One cannot judge a sound of the loudspeaker by trying it on one amp only, which I suspect is the case...

I have the same opinion as you that the clarity found in the miniOnken disappears in a large box. Of course they reach deeper, but the magic that this driver has seems to disappear a little then. It's a shame as this driver is top of the line.
Alpair 11MS is the opposite. Really like this driver in a large 58 liter box.
Gives a softer more harmonious sound.
This is my personal impression in combination with my other equipment and the room in which they play.

muddy sounding?
no that not really this, it's less defined, less nice and not due to the Amp (NAD 356 BEE) and not due to the wood quality boxes. because all are made with the same wood. the comaraison is exact i use ddvp15 on the left and TWTD on the right in the same time and i listen.... (i have invert channel to see if it was coming from the amp, no)
conclusion ddvp15 goes lower and come "a bit"to trouble. still good but now i have listen it see only that 😏

this drivers prefers not so large boxes....? TWTD is little less big and sound better in it

in wich size of boxes have try the maop 10.

i really like the sound of chn-50p... more "alive" and maop is "chirurgical"
