For a class A bias, it's better to use a Cap-Multiplier, where the rectifiers and the powertransistors are mounted under the PCB, in direct contact to the big heatsink. From power dissipation it should be possible to use this Capmu for A/B power amps lessor equal 100W.

A few figures will make the heatsink size clearer.

A First Watt amp, for example, will be biased approx at 1.5A per channel and if using one C-Mx per channel, this means it passes the same 1.5A per device (for each '+' and '-' rail) and for the IRFP devices, they drop about 4.5 v across each device and this generates 4.5 x 1.5 = 6.75 watts of heat to dissipate into a heatsink. [this means an added 13.5 watts dissipation for both channels - 2 x C-Mx for this type of amp]

If you want to restrict that heatsink temp to about a 15*C temp rise (pretty conservative), you simply divide the 15 by the 6.75 that gives here 2.2*C/W (degrees centigrade per watt) and this is how the heatsinks are rated - just look up this in any of the heatsink tables

So for 2 fets for each C-Mx in this example, the single heatsink needs to be rated at 1.1*C/W for the two fets - just look this up on the Mouser/Digikey/etc site for the size/cost.

From use over the years, you can run these IRFP fets to well over the usual 45*C transistor body/heatsink temp on a typical 25*C room temp day

Meanman,

Can I ask if you have an up to date schematic, BOM and stuffing guide for the PCB design as it stands at the moment. Also is the PCB design final yet, as it is not clear reading the thread where you are up to with the GB totalling 75 PCB's.

Any anticipated pricing available at this stage?
