There is certainly no need to bevel the edge behind the woofers - at least not for acoustical reasons. Behind the Eminence it will make a difference - hopefully to the better. It will take some effort though - staying clear of all those mounting screws.

How about this:

Rear-mounted with decoupling material between driver's frame and the baffle, seems good.
The bracket can be re-considered, though. I'd like to make it thinner if I go this route, maybe using metal....

It's a bit late to start changing the design so drastically, but I may consider adding a rear brace for the midrange driver.
Really I need to wait and see how much space the waveguide takes up. I'm sorely tempted to just buy the Parts Express job, but I know I owe it to myself to attempt one!

It depends on how strong the motivation is 😉 And, as I saw you got decent tools on hand already, changing the driver mounting from front to rear shouldn't be so 'drastic'.
The recessed cut on front of the baffle can be chamfered off entirely when you make the new bevel cut. In such case, you might take almost all thickness for the bevel. Then, on the rear, you may stick several small wood blocks around the hole for aligning the driver so it won't slip as long as the support on magnet assembly is in position.
I've seen several cases of rear mounted drivers with gorgeous results. And there is an admirable vibration isolating fuction in it. 😀 I myself will try similar mounting method in my next baffles, just have to wait after I settle down in the new place....

Perhaps I'll use rear-mounting on the mk3 design lol
Mk3 = better woofers and 2 x Beta 8 - rear mounted?!?! hehe
I don't even know what I think of any of these drivers yet..

Rather than two Beta 8s why not one PHL 8inch?/
There is a pair in the trading post section, buy now and avoid the rush, just out of interest what woofer are you dreaming of for the 3rd iteration??

I have no money to buy anything now, and I'm only thinking in dream-mode. This project is big and expensive enough for quite some time. From what I've been told the Visaton B200 is the one to get for mids.
For OB bass the Hawthorne woofers seem to be ideal (naturally) but I don't think they come in 12". With more space I'd think about bringing some monopole bass in underneath to cover <35hz.
Before knowing what I want next I need to hear what I have now 😀

While I'm on hold waiting to clean out the garage for use as a workshop I keep dreaming about my "Ultimate" system, you know; the one you'd build if money and time were no object.
I think you are correct in using sealed or ported for that bottom octave, it's what plan for the project currently waiting.
It is just that I keep hearing good things about PHL midwoofers.
I do agree that lack of funds is more of a problem than lack of time at the moment.
I have gone back to my first set of sealed boxes using some cheap Tandy/Ratshack mid-woofers and a cheap tweeter.

Yes Simon
Time for an update and some more pictures.
i am interested in your opinion of the cheap woofers now that you have had time to listen and critique

12"? Get the Beyma sm112n. Cheap and great sounding. You're in UK, there are many resellers with great prices.
Hi everyone,
That's just a cigar, I don't smoke normally.
Progress is exceptionally slow! A friend's Dad is turning my waveguides in his precision metal lathe. They're too big to fit the lathe properly so he's had to cut them in half and do half at a time.
When I have the waveguides in my hands I can finish the build.
I can't do anything without them and can't hurry him up, as it's for free 🙁

WOW !

What's the profile (flare contour)?
Just something I found on this site. It's almost straight but flares out at the mouth. 8" diameter.
AE Dipole woofers look very impressive(new pictures on AE site)
Theres a new dipole speaker OB9 on his site

Must be a bit frustrating waiting for those waveguides! At least it should be a fine job when completed though
I wish I had a timber world near, that ply looks excellent 🙁 . The B&Q stuff is very poor in comparison.
