Advice on which quality driver to pair with a 300B low Wattage amp

Hi,

i am looking for a high quality full range driver for a diy cabinet (appreciate if there is already a plans) to match with my 300b amplifier.
My 300b is a type which churns out around 11 Watts single ended Class A.
(monoblocks made by Diyhifisuply, the Lux mono max)

I am looking for quality.
Price is an issue as always, say around the 300-350€ per driver max if possible.

My listening room is 3.5x4 meter, so small room.
I listen mostly to jazz, electronic, indie, rock, classical.

Thanks for your help!

Hi, thanks for your response.
It looks like an interesting driver.
I read through that link to ASR you provided.
However, in that review it is said that this driver needs ‘heavy’ use of dsp to get flat response.
I don’t have a minidsp for instance or anything with dsp in it.
Also the use of dsp would kill my Wattage output i think?

Hi @simsalabim !

I have a pair of DIY SE 300B amps that I use with a pair of French-made 170mm TRIANGLE T17FL2 that I bought in 1985 and installed in a 32L BR solid Beechwood box, for room matters.

I still have them today, fine and fully working... It was 1985 ! Wide band speakers were quite rare at that time and very costy : the T17FL2 was priced at 150 Euro each, any other of the same size were much over in price tag - if you even could obtain them.

Today, the offer in Wide Band Speakers is huge, at all prices, and the performances are most of the time excellent... For a tight budget, I would consider this one, from Visaton :

Many people experienced it in different loads : BR, TL, TQWT... With surprising results. At that price, I said that one day I'll give it a try !

This can yield plenty loud except in bass control which depended on too many things. What are your low bass requirements?

Here in China there are several excellent fullrange brands as well as boatloads of vintage alnico drivers from US/UK/EU/JP. Would you consider for example 1960s DEW production off eBay?

@simsalabim

they do EQ at main listening position.

I recommed only EQ in the near field. Much less EQ to be done then.

Easy possible if close to back wall or better corner placing no extra EQ at all necessary.
Hmm,

looks like a contender, only thing is EQ is not going to happen, my set is all analog (only a cd player), and i am not really wanting to integrate a Minidsp, with my only 11 Watts that doesn’t sound like a good idea, or do opinions differ?

Thanks for your reaction.

I am open to all high quality sounding drivers for my build.
I don’t expect ravine deep bass.
However, it should be a balanced sound, not tipping over to high mids and treble.
I have looked around on ebay and saw various brands and models, only thing is, with those drivers sometimes more then 60 years old, how about rubber rings, cloth and membrane quality? after so many years there is expected to be wear and decline of materials?

good wideband/fullrange drivers is Fostex

While you would like a fairly sensitive loudspeaker, with the typically high Rout you also want flattish impedance.

The FFxx5wk (the 125 is the most problematic). This is specific to the FFxx5wk series but the ZIG and ModPodge apply to the FExx6s as well. The whizzer cone ones benefit from phase plugs. https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/opinions-on-mods-to-ff85wk.365756/post-6480912

The FExx6 are intended to be used with high Rout amplifiers and loaded into horns.

For FRs i tend to prefer the Markaudio.

When i was doing them, A10p was a favourite of the small SE tube amplifiers, NLA, so its successor the CHP-90 would be a good candidate. I haven’t heard it, Leif really likes his. The paper ones are about 3dB more sensitive.

BTW, how are you getitng 12w from a single 300B?

I really don’t know yet which way to go.
I do like vintage stuff also but am a bit afraid of such old materials.
And would hope that with modern techniques better drivers would be made?

I saw this driver from 1955 , wow..
haha

Would this be interesting?
Or just stick with the ‘usual suspects’.

Also, what about Tangband?
I see drivers costing around 300€ each, how do these compare with for instance Fane?

Thanks
