OpAmp as Input in Power Amplifier - exploration

Isn’t that what I just said?

At one time they were all the rage. They would have died out eventually, with SMD taking over. Home built STKs (and most fakes) are made out of SMDs. The module is kind of a redundant step for new design now.

They are not really supposed to be used like that. Magic smoke is common for those who try. And does anyone know how positively awful the crossover distortion is on those “designs”? One is far better off driving complementary CFP pairs with a regular, non-power high voltage op amp. At least proper current limiting can be added and they can be biased into AB.

With a very small peak to peak output voltage, one might get away with it. If a device can survive as a comparator over the full common mode range on a single 30V supply you could put 60 on it with the output perfectly centered. Go off center by much, and boom. Not much different than fake 2SC5200’s with 2N3055 inside. Runs fine at quiescent and with a few hundred mW of music. Turn up the volume, and bang.
