Im curios about the numbering after HSH. Always thought the 1st 2 numbers are year of production yours is 04 = 2004 production ??????Hi,
Amoung other tda1541a dac chips I also have 3 of these HSH0449 version.
I bought them many years ago at a reliable seller in the Netherlands which had them for years somewhere in stock.
They sound very good, fake or not.
Ad.
Is it true that the TDA1541A N2 from 1998 outperforms the S1 and the S2 crowns?
From seller trying to sell me some:
The Crown series excels in lsb accuracy / linearity, so what people sometimes do is stack 2 units... It doubles accuracy and output current at half the output noise....
Outperforms the S2, where the 2 Taiwan grade dacs TDA1541 N2 perform better than the S1.....

Yes, that date does not make sense.Im curios about the numbering after HSH. Always thought the 1st 2 numbers are year of production yours is 04 = 2004 production ??????
Yes S1 for me too. Wonder if materials used for Taiwan made chips causes the difference in sound.I have a couple of Taiwan chips from 98, they are very detailed, but lack the body of Holland chips, I favored my 1988 holland S1 Single Crown over my 1 Taiwan chip from 97 and 2 Taiwan chips from 98 .
Had an S2 but sold it, for me it sounded too hifi, S1 more balance. Could be my dac . Lol
There's a ebay seller call Descartes from Taiwan, reputed company as I used to purchase stuff from them when I lived there.
Seems like they have some S2 but the asking price !!!!!!!!!

@sumotan Hello, I have searched for that eBay seller, but nothing shows up. I found this seller on eBay TDA1541
I just don't trust sellers from China much! So many fake stuff out there! I see it has Taiwan labeled on the left side, so I am wondering if an authentic TDA1541 made in Taiwan is as good as the 1 and 2 crown labels on the oem Pihllips chips?

This isn't a China seller it's Taiwan, they are the agents for Wima & Philips products FSHZ42.
You assumed the Taiwan labelled 1541 is as gd as S1/S2, well it isn't they sound much different.
Why me don't know perhaps could be materials thats slightly different in composition. etc.

Sorry I have only one Single Crown left, thinking of using it in a new build.@pathway Hi! Do you know where I may purchase one of these S1 Single Crown chips? Thanks!
Have the PCB and discrete output stage and SPDIF PCB and i2s/HDMI PCB, just need motivation to order other components.

Agreed, the Taiwan chips sound very different, kind of brighter with less weight.Technically they may be better as in THD ect'. Tighter tolerances is my guess. This isn't a China seller it's Taiwan, they are the agents for Wima & Philips products FSHZ42.

I prefer the sound of the Holland chips, but some of this is system dependent to a degree, and not all sound the same either.
Yeah, some of the asking prices are crazy! There's a ebay seller call Descartes from Taiwan, reputed company as I used to purchase stuff from them when I lived there.

I had three different Holland A S1 single crowns, and they all had different presentations, one had very full bottom and mid, one I have kept is very balanced, and one pulled from a QUAD 66 sounds like a late Taiwan chip but more airy up top, this was a surprise!Yes S1 for me too. Excuse if I didn't read the whole thread and if that question might sound stupid.. but why is the TDA1541A so sought after? I mean, ie. the 1 bit DACs provide a so much closer reproduction of the amplitude..?

I'm not a fan of non-oversampling. If you want to know why, listen to Peter Gabriel's CD 'So', the track 'Sledgehammer'. The first ~8 seconds are unbearable for me with such a chip. So rough, so harsh. I understand it got other advantages but I have to say I have never heard a DAC in a CD player that tops any modern soundcard with 24bit, even surprisingly cheap ones. See, I don't want to star a war here but the prices of a TDA1541A now exceed easily high res sound cards and other DACs, which doesn't seem to be reasonable in any way. Please excuse my ignorance but why not just rip the CD and play it with a modern DAC?
