Iron Pre Essentials Kits For The DIYA Store - Register Your Interest

I reworked my layout and now have all mains and transformers to the far left and the two balanced boards to the far right. My only problem is now figuring out the Goldpoint.

Is there any harm placing it like in picture one or two?
If at the front... see where AC lines run directly under or nearby. Also, you have longer wiring distance for attenuator to boards... So... back is better, IMO.
I don’t have room to mount it to the front unless I move both boards towards the back of the chassis and I need to put smaller heatsinks on.
IMHO, keep it at the back. Only (that I know) reason to move it to front is to direct mount to chassis front plate vs. using extender. There may be other valid reasons, but that's the only one I can think of. 🙂

See ZM's funny comment re: 6L6's photos earlier in thread.

Edited to add - Just read Ixnay's comments... I thought this was a Goldpoint stepped attenuator aka volume control. Am I nuts? OK, don't answer that.

Yup, my mistake too. I didn't see a string of resistors on the business end of the pot and assumed it was the selector switch, which I guess wouldn't make good sense anyway, being a 4 deck affair. I totally agree with the idea of mounting it using an extension rod, to locate it right next to the board volume connections.

gain testing we are cringing about on last few pages is nothing else than way of finding/confirming is there any problem with Gizmos made by Holzarbeiter and Iforgotwhoelse

TonyEE asked for TurboGigaMega Iron Pre with 20db of gain (to drive bridged F4); I did show him that existing Iron Pre Bal (with 6db) followed with Edcor PC600:15K (with 14db) is resulting in asked 20db

Yes, but dullard H. still has no clue on hooking up Edcor as follower for elusive 20 db gain. Edcor has no schematic on wiring on site.

Has tonyEE figured it out with help from his Tech/Builder?

of course that permanent wiring of additional booster xformer will affect performance of normal out, in case when boosted is not used

meaning of note was - wire it permanently if you're going to use it, and you can use normal out in same time, if needed

it is well noted that booster xformer is tough load (whatever Rin of connected amp is) for eeny buffer

anyhow, Iron Pre is basic block, while many things we wrote later about are extra, patchwork game

well, in audio it is that way - male for sources - source doesn't care for fingerpoking

contrary to Energetic connections - live is always female, to avoid brain behind fingerpoken to be burned

anyhow - if in doubt, use Lemo connectors, everyone happy

but if you're lending your gear to neighbor, lend him some adapter cables, too
