What's a good 5" mid-bass for vocals?

I've been looking at some 6.5" mid-bass drivers and here are some cheaper examples. Any recommendations here? I'll need crossover designs too.

Silverflute 5.25 are suppossed to be really good for the money.

We have used the W14 a lot. It is a really good value, and just good. ut we have only ever used it up to 450Hz.

AFAIK it is a Madisound house brand (made in China).

I have a bunchh of 4Ω surplus for anyone in Canada. I also have some going to the UK eventually.

Maybe you need a good 2-way design?

Yes, indeed. I was previously thinking 5.25" but I'm looking at 6.5" now.

  • Vifa P17WJ plus Vifa D25AG Leach xover
  • Elsinore Peerless 830875 plus Peerless 810921 aka Scan D2608
  • OCD Peerless 830875 plus Vifa XT25tg
  • Wilmslow Duet Monacor SPH-165 plus Vifa D27TG
  • Kalasan, Satori MW16P plus TW29R/SB29RDC

Any recommendations for the above?

The Elsinore is not comparable to the others. And if I had to pick one, that would be it in this list. But why these designs? There are numerous 6"/1" designs out there worth investigating. Look for a well-documented one (including measurements), certainly if you're not able to listen first.

Why these designs? These are the only 6.5" 165mm projects for which I have crossover designs. Do you have any more designs with crossovers you can suggest?

You seem to like the Elsinore - yes, it's a 3-way but I'm wondering if it's possible to just use it as a 2-way? It would need a revised crossover, and I don't know how to do that.

When you say 6"/1" do you mean just 165mm or are you including 150mm drivers?

I like well-thought through designs. That show the designer has a clue about important things. A lot of those designers are around here at times. Designs I would suggest having a look at : Mark K's ERDXT and various designs of Alexander Heißmann. And there is so much more, look at all designs from Troels Gravesen, Tony Gee and others that have their X-overs partly disclosed.

Furthermore, SB (Ara) and SEAS (Idunn) have a few on their site, as do a lot of resellers. It's not that bad by the way to pay for a good design. And magazines like the German Hobby HiFi and Klang&Ton do present us a lot of almost free designs. You just have to know where to look.

Thanks for suggesting Alpairs. I do already have Alpair 10M units in tall columns and they are very clean. Recently I've been using a Wharfedale Diamond type bookshelf (Program 30D) with some kind of poly cone which I find fuller on vocals so I've stayed with those. I'm not convinced about metal mid-bass.
did you have build a diy speaker that can beat vocal of program 30d?

whats the best hi-efficiency (circa 95db) 5" midrange?
There is a small problem I've found using such drivers [ and I only have one pair and they need to be rebuilt after a rat-attack] and that is needing some very high efficiency woofers to mate with them. In the Fostex I have played with this meant dual 12" or good 15" woofers, or throwing away SPL with big resistors and waste heat
That Fostex hasn't been available for decades either

Reviving this thread since I need to make a decision on drivers and crossover. I have a pair of 5 sided columns I'd like to use. They are around 16.5 litres and the width of the front is 155mm. So a 150mm unit like the SB 15MFC fits the present opening. I'm a bit of a novice at speaker building and don't have the means to design crossovers, so I'm dependent on existing designs.

There are 2 or 3 designs for the 15MFC but in enclosures more like 10 litres. Here the enclosure of 16.5 litres seems more suited to the SB 17MFC for which there are also suitable crossover designs. The would require adding some extra wood panels to increase the width of the front. Not impossible but it would be a challenge to make it look as good. The tweeter will go on top of the cabinet in some way as yet to be fabricated.

So please advise where to go from here!

I'd be grateful for any feedback on the 15MFC versus 17MFC or suggestions for any other 2-way designs that might suit. I'm in London, UK, so would source parts here like SEAS, SB, Scanspeak or Monacor for instance. Not much Dayton over here.

Hello Dave. Cross section is 160 x 115mm, height 920cm. It was a MLTL with a height of 1200cm, 24ltr, but I cut it down to 16.5ltr. Looks better in the room. It did previously have Alpair 10.1 units but I wasn't totally happy with them and preferred my 2-way Wharfedale Program 30D-6 speakers with polypropylene cones. So the MLTL is gone!

Thinking of using the SB 15MFC. Fs = 39hz, VAS 17ltr, Qts .36, EBP 98. Thinking vented. Not sure how that would work in 16.5ltr. I'd like some opinions on that.
