Says " doesn't ship to your country" USA?
This was the 80's, and Pete was already around 70, heavy smoker etc. Small shop on Main around 35th. Most likely gone now.I wasn't aware of Satellite Electronics. I guess I missed out. 🙂
Is RP still on 4th? Back in the day it was Tony and Hedley.
cheers
RP Electronics is still around, but now located at a industrial park in Burnaby. 4th Avenue has gone upmarket, and the building that RP was in was knocked down and replaced with a lululemon store. the lululemon logo is an Omega (Ohm) and that is displayed prominently on the building. But they sell yoga wear, not resistors. 🙂
Isn't using recently produced parts an easier solution? I mean, needing to buy truckloads of scrap to recycle possibly defective parts does not seem a straight line from A to B. IF the DIY device is built at all the reward is a yard full of scrap (and possibly an unhappy partner) and maybe even that silly solution of external storage. For a lot less one could get used learning modern parts and buy soldering tools for those. You can't stop time or go back in it.
A comparison between DIY equipment that has cost a lot of time to find the old and rare parts and a recent ready made or recent made DIY device does make matters clear if it is worth the loss of time and inefficiency of this way of working. To my astonishment todays Chi-Fi devices may even be competitive!

@Nelson Pass
Wow!
If you need someone for some doing in EU, I can do it again (like the last F3 GB). 😎
Yes, that is do-able. I will check my inventory, I had considered a DIY F3 type of essentials kit for the store, but I probably have much more than needed for that.

Thats not what i see. But if they do not ship to USA, its probably good, since according to other member, they are fake.Says " doesn't ship to your country" USA?

@ jean-paul: good points. I recently salvaged some of my own HT gear that I was no longer using. Was able to salvage quite a few of the bigger / smaller caps, inductors, heatsinks, bgt's, fet's mfet's, but it was not fun and used up both of the cones on my cheap de-soldering device. So I as you do, wonder about the value of this also.
Hardliner with regards to sound quality and simplicity here. My only desired feature on power amplifiers is a true power switch besides good sound quality. Therefor my fun now is trying out and modding cheap minimal feature class D amplifiers that quite often manage to give better results than more expensive branded amplifiers.
Reusing of old parts gives a feeling of uncertainty as well. Maybe I kept a defective part as the device was taken apart/recycled with a reason? Certainly when salvaging SMD parts from recent consumer devices: were the parts already recycled before?

some are simply forgetting "fun factor" and "cheapskate instinct" as something important
after all these decades, I still have that urge - find it cheap, make it big

Never had that with regards to low cost as most good DIY devices cost more that ready made devices anyway. Fun factor is one of the best reasons to DIY of course but I think I'd have more fun using new/unused active parts for a project than recycled parts with a history. Why? It is exactly that parts that determine final results for a large part. DIY is not carved in stone either when my shiny new AB amplifier in beautifully crafted chassis/casing sounds worse than a relatively low cost class D amplifier (this occurred twice recently). My various DIY DACs were outclassed by an SMSL DAC so I accepted that too. Hard times 🙂
Transformers, switches and such are excellent parts to be reused.

leave ppl to their own way, you use your own
I did realize long time ago that I rarely can save money with my DIY, nothing I made wasn't made without substantial investment ........ and if you want it in quality, presentable, and reliable ..... it can't be cheap
Of course, there is saving from buying same quality made commercially , but in general ......... there is simply no sense in DIY-ing cheap way
all under condition that you really count value of things you took from shelves; if you don't count that - I'm able to make 5 figures worth gadget for cost of my time

Agreed 100%. Everyone should do as he/she pleases but I only give some attention points that are often eh ... forgotten/selectively ignored.
Reusing unused NOS parts is another matter compared to recycling used parts taken out of defective devices. The latter is like buying "original" semis on Ebay/Aliexpress.
Yes Zen Mod, the factor time... looking at my current setup I could have saved tens of thousands of Euro by not DIYing and have had way more time to do other stuff. But I didn't 😀

can't agree, having scavenged enough parts in my life
semi is good if it is good, either NOS or used; and my stance is that I can trust more in part pulled from old (previously) working equipment than bought new, excluding really reliable sources

Fresh new old stock 2N3055 as I have those. I never use any power transistors from dead amplifiers. I eh... did recycle semis of defective industrial equipment after careful testing/measuring in very high power equipment against rules with good results though. Sometimes you just can't choose.

In searching my property for goodies that may contain SITs, I came across a few forgotten treasures, which are now on the disassembly/cleanup bench. These heat sinks, to buy new would be hundreds of dollars each, the GE VHF PA stages have beautiful machined aluminum spreader plate under the heatsinks, perfect for surface mounting of Tokin and many other types of devices. I also found an airport beacon transmitter, I know Nautel used FETs, not sure what will be inside this one...we'll see.
And an update on items checked already, the UHF TV xmtr and both Chinese wind inverters came up with no SITS, but some big IXYS MOSFETS.
More later.

so, all roads are leading to Rome?
I mean - try telling anything of sense in Toob Forum, see how long you'll last
Matter of Toob or SIT or JFet or BJT or OP or Whatever is matter of where one's heart is placed, not logic, at least when speaking of hobby
I know and I agree about importance of informed choice, but after that - logic and hobby aren't exactly things going hand by hand
hm, which brings me again to dilemma - do I need Field Coil FR ..... or not

- Home
- Amplifiers
- Pass Labs
- Let's pool our resources to find some used SITs, power JFETs etc
