As I see it, people using bicycles usually dress casual, in regular chothes -summertime shorts and t-shirts, no helmet. You might actually be surprised how well typical cycling attire does protecting you from road rash in a run of the mill 25-30 mph crash on a road bike. I come home with more skin than one would expect.
But i certainly wouldn’t want a blowout at 70 mph going down Vanderpool hill
As I often do.
And at typical "bike speeds" on a pedal bike, which it was designed for, moderate things in a sensible, careful way.
After all, it's a bicycle, human-powered device, and they're not out running a sprint marathon hoping to win a prize or trophy.
But then you've got those extemists like kodabmx, who like to push the envelope, and of course their chances of physical harm are vastly increased due to their speeds.
I treat my motorized bike the same as if I was only pedeling it, I certainly don't need to 'rush' where I'm going.
Because I want to get there in once piece.
If I want 'speed' I'll use a car.
I wouldn't do that on your bike, either.Regarding bicycles and speed....and safety measures.
It's a bicycle, not a motorcycle.
It wasn't designed for running at speeds approaching automobile levels, nor do its brakes stop it like a car/motorcycle, and if a wrong move or mechanical issue arises, propelling yourself at 30+ MPH will surely be dangerous.
Of course, one could dress with the protection for such issues, helmet, boots, etc.
But how many bikers dress appropriately for a typical ride on a bike?
Even though my motorized bike can reach speeds of 30+, I'm not about to play with danger.
I'm not about to test fate and brag about it.
My record was 75.5km/h on a rigid mountain bike down a big hill... Stopping as hard as you can will make the wheels hot 🙂
Cyclists in the olympics can sustain 75 km/h.
Also FYI a 49cc engine is illegal in Ontario - that's why I was going to go with 80cc. If you're going to break the law, might as well have fun doing it.
"Toronto Traffic Services tells blogTO that "Converted bicycles or homemade motorcycle/moped units are not exempted from any current legislation. The only exempted class of motor vehicle is certain ebikes, that are within a certain class and allowed to operate on a road."
"These conversions are 'motorized vehicles,' and as such require a motorcycle/moped licence, safety compliance documentation, lights, horn, proper brakes, DOT compliant tires, chain guards, reflectors, proper mufflers, spark arrestors, insurance, helmets and a whole handful of other safety requirements. ( exactly what a motorcycle/moped is required to have)."
"I am not aware of any manufacturer that is currently producing products that would satisfy all the requirements. The charges and fines that any person operating on the road would be eligible for would amount to thousands and thousands of dollars (no insurance is a $5000 first offence)."
"I am aware of and have seen some of these motor vehicles being operated. They are not made to handle the speed, extra weight and do not have a braking system that would be able to stop the vehicle in an emergency situation. As such, they are not allowed on any roadway in Ontario.""

I would hardly consider myself an extremist LOL I just like going fast. But then you've got those extemists like kodabmx, who like to push the envelope, and of course their chances of physical harm are vastly increased due to their speeds.

If you treat the bike as if you were pedaling it, what's the point of the motor? Laziness?
I'd love one of these but I can get a motorbike for less money!

If anyone in the GTA knows where to find a Sachs Madass 125, I'll buy it.
I'd have thought that you'd by now know my age, and being retired.I would hardly consider myself an extremist LOL I just like going fast.

And with that the associated age-related things that naturally go with age.
So with that now again stated...
President Nixon once said "Let me be perfectly clear...."
Being almost 70 years old, having a mild hernia, mild knee problems, moderating my daily actions to avoid/prevent further problems from happening......... the 'what's the point of' you ask is..... not laziness, but pretty clear.
Fair enough. So it's just a matter if it being cheaper / easier than driving the car I guess.I'd have thought that you'd by now know my age, and being retired.

Around here it’s packs of Middle Aged Men in Lycra (MAMILs) doing 25-30 mph. And it’s always a race. Wearing street clothes is a recipe for chafing and diaper rash. As well as ridicule. As I see it, people using bicycles usually dress casual, in regular chothes -summertime shorts and t-shirts, no helmet.

I don’t ride in the packs anymore but mid-upper 20’s in the flats is par for the course unless the wind prohibits it. A lot more downhill. Not considered unsafe at all.
Getting it into the 50’s or 60’s down a 14% grade - yeah, that might be “unsafe”. Ill never forget when I was doing 60 down Vanderpool and a couple on a tandem blew past me like I was standing still.
46 on a kid bike is pretty tough to do. You need a “real” bike to do that reliably and repeatably.I know I have done about 46 MPH down a mountain road. Was a 16 year old kid at the time. Likely I have come close to that speed a few times again but not quite.
I know someone who had a deer run in front of him while doing about 40MPH downhill on a road bike. Would up with antler in his arm and other less severe injuries.
I know a man who had an accident on a motor scooter in 1990, lost balance on a speed hump.
That hump was on his daily route from home to office, he knew it was there even if the paint was worn out, in front of a school at a bend in the road.
Son of uncle's friend.
Many injuries, scrapes and broken bones...
No helmet, brain got a blood clot behind the eye.
I took his reports to a hospital which does complex brain surgeries in 1992, they said 50-50 chance of table death, and the nerves would have atrophied, so little chance of recovery even if the surgery went well.
He is barely functional, speech distorted, partial paralysis on one side.
He was only about 22 years old then, now 54 if he is still alive, we are not in touch.
Be careful people, precaution is safer than thrill.

Collisions with a deer are far more dangerous than collisions with the ground. Or guard rails, telephone poles, or concrete barricades. And that even goes for automobiles. You just don’t want to hit one.
As a concerned Citizen and Engineer, I am terribly worried about Global Warming. This dry Summer has been a Nightmare even in the Garden of England.
Seems like we shall all bake in the Heat and Drought even in Northern Climes...
Even my Apple Trees are struggling with it:
This dumb tree is blossoming in September! I don't make this up! By my calculations we shall soon be harvesting apples in England in February.
It's a heatwave for sure.

In less than a century, we humans have used up resources which took millennia to accumulate as petroleum and coal, and happily thought of the atmosphere as an infinite heat sink.
Now we are all facing the consequences.
Take care, and in fact high prices make users become conservative in spending.
This happened with tobacco, now with high energy prices I hope people will become more careful about using energy in a wasteful way.

She's been in control for centuries before humans were born.
The planet varies in its orbit around the sun with its occasional solar flares, which results in changes.
We were taught these things long ago in school.
I don't listen to fear generated propoganda
Right... It has nothing to do with humans and the industrial revolution, right? /sarcasm
SMH.
Of course, they have found sea fossils on mountain tops. The planet is always changing, but on it's own it doesn't change on this scale anywhere near this fast.

Going by charts or polls that someone made, I would be concerned about the credibilty, since you simply can't rely on anything these days.
Call me suspicious, call me cynical, just don't call me late for dinner.

Go by your own eyes then. Record drought, record flooding, record heat waves, and record ice breaking off of Greenland and Antarctica.
And most of the change was man made before we knew or cared. I used to go help a friend pick up scrap from the garbage. Old fridges included. The scrap yard wouldn't take a fridge that had coolant in it so he'd just cut the lines on the side of the road with a bolt cutter. At such a young age in the 90's, we didn't understand just how bad that screws the environment - releasing R12 into the atmosphere.
Then there's Lytton, BC? The day after they set a temperature record of 49.6°C, the place burned to the ground!
And here in Toronto, we have more severe weather these days than we used to, too. Primarily flash flooding from pop up storms. Thankfully, it's never been 49°C here. Funny enough, the record (40.6°C) was set in 1936.
For some people this storm isn't that big of a deal, certainly not a hurricane or the like, but this kind of weather doesn't happen here normally.
We really should repair the planet before it's too late, but isn't it just so fitting of our current society full of disposable crap that people feel like we could just go to Mars instead? LMAO

I have been trying to fix the Planet from Global Warming recently. It's a flippin' Nightmare!
I already wear a jumper and use an electric blanket rather than heat my apartment.
I read I must use my bicycle.
I read the problem is too many Cheeseburgers. Defoliating the forests into cattle country?
It didn't work. I felt horrible after cooking this stuff.
I think we are in trouble.

And now think about the Ice Age, the Great Flood, the dying off of the dinosaurs.... all well before humans were around with their confounded refrigerators and slop that now gets attention for some reason.Go by your own eyes then. Mother Nature is in control.... always was.
But of course that's not the focus of debate these days, they want people to be held accountable instead.
Besides, it generates revenue to feed the greedy ones.
