Salas DCG3 preamp (line & headphone)

I got hold of a KSA-80B that will stay with me forever. Still amazes me every day and shows clearly whatever I put in front of it.

DIY Accuton speakers in transmission line. Some build pictures here for whoever interested. Forum in Swedish but pictures quite self explained.

Your also involved in my dac as the picture shows😊 Hiding under the dac-board is a couple of Lundahl 1674.

Something in the vinyl rig to upgrade? For cartridge, for phono stage, what you use?
Vinyl is so far second choice. I’m a bit to lazy and not chasing that black gold. However, have a RIAA from a (slaughtered) Audionet SAM v2 which serves well for my purpose.
There’s probably a lot to upgrade!

Forgot to mention: Thorens TD320 with an AT-OC7 (getting close to 30 years…)

Not too bad on impedance. I can use practically any amplifier, not necessary with a Krell! Runs nicely on my KT88 triods as well.
I picked 11ohm woofers, should give around 88dB/2,83V. If I could change something I would have used 6ohm woofers as I have to dampen my midrange.
But then I’ll end up with 3ohm in the low end and a current capable transistor would be necessary- choices😊

11 Ohm woofers was a good choice for doubling them up IMHO. Volts are more linear to create than to push amperes. DCG3's 3x (9.54dB) standard gain setting should be OK I guess for practical use of volume control with your speakers sensitivity and normal voltage gain power amplifiers.

Hi

From what I see there Headphone Test Lab results it has nearly 20 Ohm flat impedance and 107.7dB/1V sensitivity (90.6dB for 1mW). Definitely not an easy load. While the DCG3 was not primarily designed for HP heavy lifting you can adjust it up enough since it is DIY.
I would set 170mA output stage bias and 4x gain for those headphones. (Build guide paragraphs 2 & 4).
You can get 114dB peak SPL with 2.07V and 103.3mA drive for the Ether2. Of course this means near 300mA pk-pk thus the need for >150mA bias when considering DCG3 is SE CLASS A and the rest of circuitry needs plus some margin.
That would primarily push the PSU's heat exchange work of course. Prefer 15-0-15V transformers for less drop across the series pass transistors and 50mm tall sinks in the DCSTB.

Proper for providing all the juice and extra quality they are but shunts with hi VAC Tx will radiate much more heat. You would need to set the positive at 400mA CCS and the negative at 300mA CCS. M1 will see all the in-out drop times CCS in Watts. Would be easier if with 18-0-18V donuts.

Hi Nick
will DCG3 drive my Dan Clark Ether2 (16Ohm, mid sensitive) headphones to satisfying volume?
I´ve tried different amps and the Ether seems to be no easy load...

DCG3 biased at 150 mA is even enough to drive efficient loudspeakers to the enjoyable quiet listening levels. I encourage everyone to try. You may be amazed with sound. Mine are 90 dB/W and mostly 4 Ω.

With loudspeakers close to 100 dB/W, it will be loud. Simple adapter:
