Music lives in the midrange

I would avoid using it open on the bottom, its not really a woofer, its a mid. So any bookshelf with it should be high passed and supported by sub.
Its cone is thin. By design i suppose, to tame the breakups.
Yes, it makes great mid. And its available and not too expensive.
I agree, I would not use it below 200 hz. One thing I like is it has a plastic/mica cone. I'd like to try that out. I find paper if not designed right gets shouty. My current 830883 does that. I will sim it before i buy it to get a feel for it, and like you said, the price is right.

The June 2022 Voice Coil issue have just shown off Tang Band's updated of 3" dome.

No distributors down under, so it's a little interest to me, but it's called the:

75-1558SH

Yes, I wasn't aware of it either, because of TB's funky 1996 era website, but here it is:

http://www.tb-speaker.com/products/75-1558sh

Vital statistics:

ID/OD: 117/140mm
90dB/2.83V
3" voice coil, neo slugs
damped chamber, Fs 260Hz.
1.5mm x-max

Low distortion, good down to about 500Hz LR2, can go a little lower if you go steeper.
Dispersion good to approximately 3KHz

A lollipop for anyone who can find a stockist!

Has anyone heard a dynamic midrange driver that can rival a competent ESL for midrange clarity and timbre for voice or acoustic instruments?

ESL can do 150-6000Hz with no crossover and low distortion for mid-range pleasure. Do any dynamic drivers meet those basic parameters for midrange integrity?

Modest size ESL mid-range panels for a two or three way DIY speaker are available e.g:
http://www.eraudio.com.au/505_Mini_Panels/505_mini_panels.html

505 Mini Panel specifications
Dimensions 505 x 150 x 5 (H x W x D in millimetres)
Sensitivity 86dB for 2.83v input
Frequency Response 200Hz to 20kHz + or - 2dB

The idea behind Lynn Olsons' the Ariel speaker was to get Quad ESL like midrange with greater dynamics.

To that end a 5" mtm transmission line was build.
