Music lives in the midrange

Taken down from Troels’ site:

bummer anyone take a screenshot or fill us in o the details?
Works fine for me. I even tried it on a different browser.

I was referring to the D8404/552000.

I can't find a price on the SS mid, but the 15 is going for $US1739.40 on Madisound which is just stupid money. An AE TD15 is $449. There is no way in hell the SS offer a 4x performance advantage.

I bet Troels was given the drivers to drum up interest, as unusually, the entire xover is up on his site.

PS As a dedicated midrange covering up to 80Hz to 800Hz band the (now sadly discontinued) Precision Devices PD 158 in 20 litre sealed box and with active crossover / DSP is easily the best I have ever used or heard. https://www.precision-devices.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/PD158-DATASHEET-310114.pdf
Have you heard the PD.103NR1?
I never heard one but looks interesting on paper: 10" midrange driver, 100dB sensitivity, flat response 200-2.5kHz. Not inexpensive though. And the 700W AES rating is kind of intimidating in a home setting.

Reminds me in basic specs of the JBL2123 I used for a long time. I'd like to try some of these though.
I'm finishing up a design that uses an OOP 12 (because it's good and I had it) for upper midbass but would have preferred a 10 physically so I might order a pair to test. Thanks for the tip.

Sens + Power = 128dB or so. You find that too much for home? My neighbours did at one stage, but then they moved.

dear Troels offered to design/build a gargantuan SWMTMWS; with faceted edges and all, and they declined!

They wanted a big ol’ classic box? Sure is an easy box to build and a nice parts seller for that over the top 15” woofer.

But come now! My recent speaker was 35cm wide and I already want to replace it with something more svelte like only 25cm wide.

The SWMTMWS could have easily been designed as a TMWS and offered as a part 2 SWM upgrade stack later.

Scan-Soeak—: Sign Troels on for another model!

Please let us know your thoughts if you try them. Logistics/cost are terrible for ne to test.

It's awful when people can't appreciate sound quality!
With these heavy duty pro units I wonder if they need generous power (10-20% of their AES rating?) to open up/sound as intended. Like your former neighbors, my wife wouldn't appreciate if I did that.

Forgot to include this before. I'm in Australia so I'd need to ship from the UK and pay taxes etc here, so not cheap but local distributors, if there is one (not PD) only stock limited lines, so I'm used to the process and choose carefully before committing the $.

I want to upgrade and try the best sounding midrange I can find. what is the best sounding midrange

Has anyone heard a dynamic midrange driver that can rival a competent ESL for midrange clarity and timbre for voice or acoustic instruments?

ESL can do 150-6000Hz with no crossover and low distortion for mid-range pleasure. Do any dynamic drivers meet those basic parameters for midrange integrity?

Modest size ESL mid-range panels for a two or three way DIY speaker are available e.g:
http://www.eraudio.com.au/505_Mini_Panels/505_mini_panels.html

505 Mini Panel specifications
Dimensions 505 x 150 x 5 (H x W x D in millimetres)
Sensitivity 86dB for 2.83v input
Frequency Response 200Hz to 20kHz + or - 2dB

Yes, there are dynamic drivers which can do that. I used aurum cantus ac130f1 to cover 150 to 5000.

I have never heard the PD 10 inch 103NR1, on paper its just about the perfect midrange for a high SPL/low distortion capable system... Mms 31g/Bl 18 = 1.7 ratio.... Thats "fast" for a 10 inch driver. I haven't bought any of the new Neo PD drivers so cant comment on the sound, but I trust PD R&D to only release new drivers which sound better than the old ones as well as measure better ... Measurements sell new drivers, great sound builds long term customer loyalty.
Everyone's design targets are different, but if I had to pick just one driver from each size, here are my recommendations based on drivers I have actually used:
PS, I only use drivers in sealed box designs or open baffle so cant comment on how these would sound in ported designs.
5 inch - BMS - https://www.bmsspeakers.com/fileadmin/bms-data/product_data_2012/bms_5s117_t_data_2012-01.pdf All round great driver. If you dont need high SPL's this is a wee gem!
6 inch - PHL - https://en.toutlehautparleur.com/media/catalog/product/datasheet/phl/1130-16.pdf Soooo good! (I used it 10 years ago and haven't heard the new Mk 2 version yet) For most people building small to medium domestic speakers this driver can do it all... Really love it.
8 inch - No recommendations... The PHL 6 or 10 inch are just so good I never thought it worth trying the 8 inch.
10 inch - PHL, Big brother to the PHL 1130, https://en.toutlehautparleur.com/media/catalog/product/datasheet/phl/3861-8.pdf In a small (9 litre) sealed box and covering 200Hz to about 1,400 Hz this is the best. It doesn't have the life like dynamics and believable weight of instruments (at high SPL) that the PD 158 has, but it can match the SPL's if you need them. Detail and resolution above 500Hz just edge out the PD 158. If you need to go down to 80Hz to crossover to subs go for the PD 158.
12 inch - Beyma - https://www.beyma.com/en/products/c/low-mid-frequency/112P80FEV28/altavoz-12p80fe-v2-8-oh/ This is a midrange beast (not so good below about 60Hz) ... Fabulous driver over the 80Hz to 1,000 Hz and amazing value! Runs the PD 158 a close second.
15 inch - Precision Devices https://www.precision-devices.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/PD158-DATASHEET-310114.pdf Over the 80Hz to 800Hz its simply the best all round driver I have ever used or heard. If you can build a cabinet big enough (about 24 litres allowing for cabinet damping and air volume used by driver) its worth it over any other driver .
Hope this helps!
Cheers
A.
